In Thomas Chang's "The Playground," he not only tells a story about his experiences as a recreation counselor, but also he reveals character traits about himself. As implied in the essay, Chang feels that instead of him being the one who is counseling and the youth group being the learners, he feels that it is vice versa. According to page 35 in lines 9-11, it states, "I was supposed to be teaching them about teamwork, responsibility, and fitness, but I was the one who was learning" (p.35, ll. 9-11). At first, Chang was in denial regarding his capabilities of the job; however, it merely took a little motivation from his boss, Mr. Kovacs, to make him realize that it takes exposure to experience to adapt to something (p.35, ll. 2-6).

By the time I crossed the threshold of the White House, I had been shaped by my family upbringing, education, religious faith and all that I had learned before―as the daughter of a staunch conservative father and a more liberal mother, a student activist, an advocate for children, a lawyer, Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mom. For each chapter, there were more ideas I wanted to discuss than space allowed; more people to include than could be named; more places visited than could be described...
