In today’s society, as many as two thirds of teenagers in the United States have a part-time job. These jobs are commonly at fast food chains, retail stores, or involve childcare. “Working at McDonald’s,” written by Amitai Etzioni, is an article about teen employment at McDonald’s food chains. Etzioni, a sociology professor, and the founder of the Communication Network, is a very experienced writer who has published more than two dozen books and numerous articles. Etzioni is a very credential author who expressed his credibility by using personal facts, reputable sources, and citing convincing facts and statistics. Throughout the article, Etzioni uses many tactics to try to prove his opinion correct, but commonly weakens the article’s effectiveness …show more content…
With the goal of logically appealing to readers, in a way to convince them to not work at McDonald’s, Etzioni also starts with factual information. Writing on the topic of teen employment, specifically at McDonald’s, Etzioni believes McDonald’s is bad for teens. Throughout the introduction, he states the statistic that there are more than two-thirds of America’s teens with a part-time paying job. The original audience of this article is all teenagers working at McDonald’s or considering it. The article also includes reasons why teens should not work at McDonalds. McDonald’s is highly un-educational, teens are working to many hours, and supervision is absurd are all arguments discussed by Etzioni to prove his point. One thing immediately recognizable is Etzioni does not realize McDonald’s does impart some skills and some teens have very little options of a place to make money. The message of the article, Etzioni suggests, is teens should carefully choose a job that will be beneficial to them, parents should advise their teen’s decision of where to work, and teens must learn to balance the quest for income and their personal …show more content…
He beings to include facts that contradict his main points. Doing this does not strengthen or add to the overall appeal of the article. Etzioni included facts such as, “teenagers do develop skills such as how to operate food-preparation machinery and a cash register,” or “students who worked at least 25 hours a week have an unemployment rate half of what those who did not work.” Including these facts completely turn against what was originally the main point of the article. ...Social Change and Modernity Edited By Hans Haferkamp and Neil J. Smelser UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA PRESS Berkeley Los Angeles Oxford © 1992 The Regents of the University of California INTRODUCTION Hans Haferkamp and Neil J. Smelser Haferkamp is grateful to Angelika Schade for her fruitful comments and her helpful assistance in editing this volume and to Geoff Hunter for translating the first German version of parts of the Introduction; Smelser has profited from the research assistance and critical analyses given by Joppke. 1. Social Change and Modernity Those who organized the conference on which this volume is based—including the editors— decided to use the terms "social change" and "modernity" as the organizing concepts for this project. Because these terms enjoy wide usage in contemporary sociology and are general and inclusive, they seem preferable to more specific terms such as "evolution" "progress," "differentiation," or even "development," many of which evoke more specific mechanisms, processes, and directions of change. Likewise, we have excluded historically specific terms such as "late capitalism" and "industrial society" even though these concepts figure prominently in many of the contributions to this volume. The conference strategy called for a general statement of a metaframework for the study of social change within which a variety of more specific theories could be identified. 2. Theories of Social Change Change is such an evident feature of...
