In the film Soul Food Junkies by Byron Hurt, several spokesmen remark on soul food’s relation to Black culture, one of whom includes activist Dick Gregory, who claims soul food should be called “death food” due to its health concerns. In addition to this comment, the relevance of diet in regard to the advancement of Black culture is also attacked. According to the movie, soul food acts as a “cultural retardant” to Black culture because of its slave roots, however, the definition of the advancement of culture is not elaborated any further.
Styles of food preparation are passed down throughout generations regardless of the connection between its history of slavery and people. Ingredients used are usually derived from crops that were widely available …show more content…
Recipes crafted throughout generations invoke feelings of pleasure when enjoyed occasionally. When enjoyed especially around the holidays, a simple dish is transformed into a manifestation of love used to express intense emotions similar to the love between a parent and their child. It is inconvenient to consume any type of food without variety and soul food is no different. When eaten in celebration, soul food acts as a window into the unique expression of every family. The near obsession with the taste and quality of soul food can be justified by its high in fat content, but it is important not to forget how the psychology of growing up with this food, remains with a child forever. It makes sense for it to also be known as “comfort food,” food that is typically unhealthy yet invokes feelings of innocence, childhood, and wellbeing. Remembrance of personal heritage does not seem to delay the advancement of any culture, on the other hand, dismissal of history does by essentially erasing a part of an individual in order for them to fit in with a more acceptable diet.
Defining the advancement of culture depends on the person assessing it.The quality of life is not tangible and cannot be judged based on an outside approach because each person has a unique set of criteria for defining quality. Dietary preferences

...Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thailand, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn common, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscommunication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to assist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1.
