The Rise of the Cigarette Filter
A Hungarian inventor named Boris Aivaz is credited with inventing the cigarette filter in 1927. His innovation did not catch on during his lifetime though, as nobody saw the need for filters on their cigarettes and there was a lack of machinery that could make cigarettes with filters (Hoffman, 1997). Filtered cigarettes were considered rare until the early 1950’s, when doctors and researchers began to make speculative announcements that linked lung disease to smoking. In response to this panic, manufacturers began to broadly introduce a machine that would put filters in cigarettes (Hoffman, 1997). Since the public believed that these filtered cigarettes were “safer”, they rapidly took over the market by …show more content…
With cost in terms of health, the cost of a filtered cigarette is lower than the cost of an unfiltered cigarette because consumers believe that filtered cigarettes are safer. The benefits (satisfying the nicotine craving) are relatively the same as smokers find ways to beat the filter’s design. Therefore, consumers buy more filtered cigarettes now than they would have if they were unfiltered only because they think it is safer and weaker (Harris, 2011). If consumers knew that filtered cigarettes were basically as potent and strong as unfiltered cigarettes, they’d buy less. The amount of smokers in society has gone down from 42% in 1965 to 18% in 2012 due to social stigmas and increasing knowledge on smoking’s relation to disease and restrictions on where to smoke (Finan, 2007). Despite this, the tobacco industry is at a massive peak growth (Harris, 2011). This can be attributed to the false sense of security brought on by filtered cigarettes, which allows consumers to believe they can smoke even more cigarettes because they are not hurting themselves as much (Harris, 2011). Thus, the innovation of the filter has kept the industry operating at a high level even during a massive decrease in consumers …show more content…
The gains comes in the form of keeping the industry operating at a high level despite a decrease in the number of smokers while the losses can be attributed to an increase in money spent on political lobbying. Some experts suggest disposing of the entire concept of the filter cigarette altogether (Gaines, 2013). Resorting to this measure would surely result in a major decrease in profits for the tobacco industry, as they would no longer be advertising a “safe” cigarette. New science has been able to create a biodegradeble filter and some cigarette packs now come with a compartment to discard cigarette filters in (Djordjevic, 2009). These gradual efforts may encourage the environmental lobbies to ease off on their attacks on the tobacco industry. So, the future’s filter could either be a biodegradeable filter or no filter at all. Whatever it may be, it will always have an impact on the tobacco

Tobacco Industry

...share. It has a long withstanding global history as a profitable business model rooted on a leisure activity. The use of tobacco first started to spread in the late 15th century after a crewman aboard the Christopher Columbus voyage noticed Cuban natives igniting and inhaling smoke from dried tobacco leaves.  News returned to Spain, spreading the smoking experience, which lead to the production of the world’s first cigar.  By the 1600’s the use of Tobacco reached much of Europe, Asia, Africa and North America.   Although paper cigarettes were developed around the same time as cigars, the first push for factory production came in 1881 with the issuance of a patent for a cigarette rolling machine that could produce 120,000 units daily.  By 1944, there were roughly 300 billion cigarettes produced annually.[i] However, the industry would take a turn in 1964 when the Surgeon General of the United States reported the dangers and health risks of cigarette smoking.  The tobacco industry has been combating consumer health awareness, governmental restrictions and taxes, and anti-smoking lobbying despite increased profitability ever since its introduction to the global market. Estimates place the current industry revenue at $465BN and gross profit at $280.3BN for 2010.  After taxes the estimated net profit will account for approximately 8.5% of the total industry revenue for this year. The industry employs 604.9 thousand with total wages approximating $11,807.8MM. Over the last...

Dhananjay Sinha Co – Head, Institutional Research Economist and Strategist +91 22 6624 2435 dhananjay.sinha@emkayglobal.com 7 March, 2012 1 Difficult to deliver the perfect balance of growth and fiscal rectitude § Challenging backdrop: The backdrop for FY13 budget is challenging given the context of slowing growth, lack of investment momentum and a difficult fiscal scenario of subdued tax and non-tax revenue generation even while various subsidy burden are ballooning. Toping these is a much weaker Central government after recent state elections debacle of Congress party, which weaken its ability to take critical reform measures § Multiple priorities amid rising structural imbalances: Fiscal imbalances and falling domestic savings pose significant structural challenges. We will look for a credible commitment towards fiscal consolidation, ways to raise tax revenue (200bp hike in excise duty or expanding the tax base by including more services), reduction in subsidy burden by raising prices of public utilities and services, ways to address the recurring deficits across multiple public sector undertaking and departments and most importantly providing the focus on capital spending and infra sectors. While implementation of GST is most ideally suited in the current context we think it is unlikely to happen in this budget...
