Undocumented immigrants are denied the opportunity to become part of the United States military due to their lack of citizenship. In my perspective, serving the military should become a gateway to citizenship, as individuals risk their lives in order to fight for and protect what they consider to be their home country. This is depicted in the novel, Spare Parts, through the character of Oscar Vazquez--an undocumented immigrant who migrated to the United States at the age of twelve and was denied admittance to the U.S. army for his legal status.
Firstly, serving in the military should become a gateway to citizenship because it is a way to give back to the United States. Spare Parts acknowledges Oscar Vazquez’s need in wanting to serve in the military in order to give back to the country that has done good to him by providing him with free education and giving the opportunity for his family to have a house. Unfortunately, Vazquez was denied the admission of the military because he was an “illegal alien” and his goal and dream of giving back was taken away. Oscar knew that being in drafted into the military …show more content…
Spare Parts gives a brief moment of when Oscar was denied the recruitment of military by his group instructor and was told that in World War Two, the Vietnam War, Canadians were recruited. The instructor of the officers in training, told Oscar that there was a point in history that it did not matter if you had a citizenship to join the military. Canadians did it in one point and it was for the same reasoning now. The U.S. needed more people and they still do now. It is not everyday when people want to risk their lives. Especially Oscar who was denied and felt threatened by the fact that did the United States did not want him, yet he still wanted to fight for it. He still wanted to risk his life to serve but if he does not have a citizenship then he

...PART 1 THE STUDY OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT R esearching the process of human development across cultures provides us with an opportunity to improve the human condition as well as, hopefully, to acquire the knowledge needed to optimize life satisfaction. We therefore begin with an overview of how diverse social science and life science researchers (collectively known as developmentalists) approach the monumental task of studying humans over the course of the life span. Our discussion includes the goals of the scientific community, the recognized framework for studying the life span, what aspects of development warrant extensive examination, and what scientific methods are used to conduct research with humans. Chapter 2 discusses the main developmental theories over the past 100 years, when social scientists, biologists, and chemists focused on studying discrete aspects of human development. Earlier introspective methods about subconscious experience and contemporary measurable evidence about microscopic genetic codes, neurons, and hormones all contribute to our understanding of the human condition. Contemporary researchers are focusing on how to integrate scientific findings and theory from across cultures into a more meaningful whole about human development. CHAPTER 1 Introduction Critical Thinking Questions 1. Developmental change takes place in three fundamental domains: physical, cognitive, and emotional-social. Which domain has been most important for...

...his work and discuss its implications for the future, the editors have brought together an impressive range of leading scholars from different jurisdictions in the fields of comparative and international law, evidence and criminal law and procedure. Using Professor Damaška’s work as a backdrop, the essays make a substantial contribution to the development of comparative law, procedure and evidence. After an introduction by the editors and a tribute by Harold Koh, Dean of Yale Law School, the book is divided into four parts. The first part considers contemporary trends in national criminal procedure, examining cross-fertilisation and the extent to which these trends are resulting in converging practices across national jurisdictions. The second part explores the epistemological environment of rules of evidence and procedure. The third part analyses human rights standards and the phenomenon of hybridisation in transnational and international criminal law. The final part of the book assesses Professor Damaška’s contribution to comparative law and the challenges faced by comparative law in the twenty first century. Generally, those journalists do a competent job of reporting on the prospect’s record. In the case of Governor George W. Bush, Texas reporters had written numerous stories about his failed businesses in the oil patch, the dubious land grab and questionable funding behind a new stadium for Bush’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and his various political contradictions and hypocrisies while serving in Austin.
