Summer Research Report

...The first weeks of the summer fellowship in the VDS stream was a bit hectic. They consisted of learning protocols and techniques. Three plates of PNiC-BSa4 colonies were grown by my partner and me that week. These were later used by the majority of lab students who had reached the cloning stage. My first PCR with plasmid pgbr22 failed, but the second was successful. PCR with pmCherry had to be completed 3 times to get a successful result and PNIC-BSa4 PCR had to be completed twice to get a successful result. The three practice PCRs were completed the 5th week of lab. Protein expression using PfDXR was started in week 3 and the sample of protein was purified the following week. I received my target protein Rickettsia prowazskii FabG (RpFabG), responsible for epidemic typhus, during week 5 of research. I worked on designing tail primers for this specific protein with two other researchers in my group that also had the same target. A virtual RE Digest gel was also done with PNiCBSa4 accepting vector and Fab G 3-ketoacyl-ACP reductase insert to help visualize and understand the next steps for our research. Primary PCR was completed with an oligo primer mix for RpFabG, followed by Secondary PCR and PCR2. The sample was nano-dropped after PCR2 to determine that the concentration was high. My first attempt had a concentration average of 9.4ng/uL, so I had to restart and complete primary PCR twice before being able to move onto secondary PCR. The primary and secondary PCR gels showed...

Meanwhile, I was frantically trying to keep up with the team while at the same time, trying not to get in the way. Why was a high school student following a medical team, you are probably wondering? Well, I was selected to attend the Eve & Gene Black Summer Medical Career program this past summer. ...DepEd chief: Moving start of classes to September will only benefit some areas KIMBERLY JANE TAN, GMA NewsAugust 14, 2012 3:30pm  61  4  2  1307   Tags: Department of Education Moving the opening of classes to September will only benefit some areas and not the entire country, Department of Education Secretary Armin Luistro said Tuesday. "When I looked at the data it looks like there is very little additional advantage, benefit for schools if you look at things nationwide," Luistro said at a Senate hearing on the K to 12 basic education program. Luistro said that proposals to move the opening of classes from June to September will probably just benefit the National Capital Region (NCR). "Obviously we cannot have a different start of the school year recognizing that the country may have different ways of experiencing the weather," he said. "I think the benefit of moving it to September may be confined to maybe NCR and a few other regions, but that may not necessarily translate to additional safety realities for the other regions," he added. Two climate types PAGASA acting deputy administrator for research and development Flaviana Hilario explained that the country has two climate types: Western areas of the country such as the NCR and Central Luzon fall under type 1 climate, which experiences rain from May to September. Eastern areas such as Aurora and the Bicol region experience type 2 climate, with their rainy season lasting from October to January...

Suggestion for a "Read and Feed" Community Program

...A. Topic This is a recommendation to start a new summer program for children with the purpose to encourage reading. The new program will be entitled “Read and Feed Crafts Program” and will be available to children ranging in age 18 months to 16 years. The children will receive a hot lunch, and a free library card. They could spend time reading, playing games, or learning different crafts. It also includes reading incentives for independent reading for reading to others. The program would run for six weeks between the hours of 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Suggestions for funding would include securing a Title I grant (Education, 2011). There are some low income families living in this neighborhood. In addition, the library could seek the assistance of volunteers to participate in the program. B. Purpose The purpose is to encourage the library to consider the idea of setting up this new program in the community during the summer time to encourage the children to enhance their reading skills and development of relationships with their peers. Summer is a great time to encourage children to read books. Reading will help to improve literacy skills and better prepare children for the upcoming school year. One of the best ways to get a child reading is to allow them to pick books they want to read about topics that interest them. Many of the children in the area of the library are from low income families and do not readily have the opportunity to experience something...

(About 400 words in total) [pic] a)Belfast and Mexico two Cities :one in United Kingdom, another in South America. In Belfast looks like it is 4 seasons in the year, as on diagram it shows warmest temperature is in June, July and August which is +18 and lowest in December and January which is 0 ,which isn’t really cold for winter so we can say it’s mild winter, as well we can see that in Belfast it is warm Spring time and warm Autumn.. If we look to Rainfall diagram we can see that in Belfast raining every moth, most rain falls in July, so we can say it’s constantly raining. We can see in Belfast most of the time is cloudy, just in June and July it’s sunny, but rest of the months is cloudy. Second city Mexico, like we can see Mexico doesn’t have winter or Autumn ,as it is warm all year round, coldest temperature is in December which is +8 and anyway it’s quit warm if we compare with coldest Belfast temperature. Warmest temperature is +27 in May, so it’s really warm comparing with warmest Belfast temperature. The Importance Of Year-Round Education

..."Year-round education is a change in the school year calendar so the long summer vacation of the traditional school year is reduced to some degree," explains Charles Ballinger, executive director of the National Association for Year-Round Education (NAYRE). Among 34 nations around the globe, the United States has one of the most limited school years. As the customary school year in America is 180 days. South Korean youngsters burn through 220 days complete in the classroom while Finland has a 190 day school year. Both instructive frameworks rank higher than the United States in math and sciences. Improving Summer School for at-Risk Students T

...Improving Summer School for At-Risk Students to Improve MAP Achievement H Abstract “Race to the Top” have left public education systems searching for ways to make sure students are reaching their highest potential. Because of the importance of accountability issues to school systems, it is important to examine ways to help students reach their potential. One tool school districts use to aid in improving student achievement is summer school. This qualitative study provides an overview of the history of summer school. Additionally, it offers a synopsis of various types of summer programs and at-risk student populations often targeted by summer school. The researcher also offers a review of literature on student learning loss over the summer months. Summer learning programs have the potential to help children and youth improve their academic and other outcomes. This is especially true for children from low-income families who might not have access to educational resources throughout the summer months and for low-achieving students who need additional time to master academic content. Because many students loose learning over the summer and some students need more time on task to master content, participation in summer learning programs should mitigate learning loss and could even produce achievement gains on standardized test such as MAP. Overview One hundred and fifty Title I-eligible students from Chandler Creek Elementary school will enroll each...

Accountability in Reporting Memo

...Congress and the Senate. In order to maintain integrity with these entities, the people that the money comes from need to know where their hard -earned money is going. There have been at least two boards set up: the Governmental Accounting Standards board and the Financial Accounting Stand Board. These boards have installed several statements of standards that tell what type of items needs to be reported. They also set the standard on how to report these financial statements. These recommendations have come down from audiences such as the one reading this memorandum, the nonfinancial audience. The boards mentioned above are reviewing audit reports that receive federal grants and donations. This is to make sure independent audit firms are in compliance with all regulations. Another thing that has come down from the nonfinancial audience is the change in the reports has made it easier and simpler to understand for people that have a complete grasp on numbers. Each person that reads a financial report will be able to easily understand where the funds came from, how much money came in, and when and where the funds were spent.
