Super Mom
Being a parent is a tough job, but being a Super Mom is the hardest, most time consuming thing I have ever done. However, it is the most rewarding and I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. Growing up with both parents present, I never realized how much my mom did for my brother and me while her and my father both worked full time jobs until I had my own children. The prepatory stage is one of the most important stages of a child’s life. According to George Herbert Mead,
‘Children under the age of three lack a completely developed sense of self, and so they have difficulty distinguishing themselves from others.’
Children are at the very beginning of figuring out basic parts of their self, and begin to soak up things they see others doing like a sponge. Once they have turned three or four, the play stage takes place. This is where children start acting out the things they see their parents and other siblings do. When my son was four, he decided to put on my daughter’s Little Mermaid dress and walk into the living room singing ‘It’s a Brand New World’ because that is what he had seen his older sister do on several different occasions. It is our responsibility as parents to make sure children know what is right and wrong when it comes to sexuality and their genders, and what we feel is morally correct. My husband quickly moved in as the male of the house and explained to him that girls are supposed to wear dresses, they were not for boys to wear. He explained that boys are supposed to be manly and play with army men and dinosaurs. From there, he started playing with super heroes and any time his sister went into his room, he made sure she knew that she was not to bring any of her girl toys in there because it was a boy’s room only. When he noticed his dad coming home in his

...Marketing Research and Promotional Message Becky Waldron PSY322 January 15, 2013 Vincent Bonina Marketing Research and Promotional Message Although still widely overlooked, women make up the majority of consumer purchases not only in the United States but worldwide. Studies show that women make 80% of the purchases in the United States, which amounts to $7 trillion dollars a year. When the marketing plan is focused at women, research needs to be current and ongoing, through surveys, and market statistics. When expanding the marketing message to include women or focus on women, focus on the following questions: what are women’s needs, perceptions and attitudes? How may these be used to create a marketing message? The traditional role of a woman in business and the household has changed dramatically over the past forty years. Therefore, so have needs, perceptions and attitudes of today women. The women of today are liberated worldwide more than ever before. Women around the world now have more life options, control of their lives more and this trend is expected to grow exponentially. Women Perception

...in their eyes. Where does one derive this perfection from? According to Media activist Jean Kilbourne, she concludes that women sign themselves up to be on a perpetual diet by the media (both magazines and television programs). What we watch and read is bound to make us feel anxious about the way we look (http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/issues/stereotyping/women_and_girls/women_beauty.cfm, viewed 21 June) A 1997 survey done at the Commonwealth Fund with adolescent girls shows that their main source of information about women’s health issues comes from the media (http://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/nedaDir/files/documents/handouts/MediaBI.pdf, viewed 21 June). Familiar stereotypes of women include the femme fatale, the supermom, the sex kitten, the nasty corporate climber. The similarity of all these stereotyped images are women who are typically white, thin, and dressed up to the nines with not a hair out of place and make-up all intact. Media has portrayed their version of beauty and attractiveness of women through countless ads and articles found in women’s magazines. Women are viewed through their physical appearance as beautiful objects, more so than men (Unger, and Crawford, 127). Hence it is no surprise that women’s bodies are the target of sexual desires especially for men (Butcher, Coward, Evaristi, Garber, and Harrison, 27). With Singapore’s growing exposure to the western world, we are fast becoming westernized in many aspects, thus inheriting...

Double Daddy Rhetorical Analysis

...Joshua Gutzmer Mr. Phinizy English 10 November 12, 2014 Synthesis Essay The supermom syndrome has jumped genders. Now it is working men who want to be great fathers. What has changed to make the working dad’s life more stressful? Balancing responsibilities, goals, and a personal life is a struggle for many people, but the most important priorities in life such as family should not be neglected. In “Double Daddy”, societies expectation of dads are to work, make money, and tend to their kids needs weather it is taking your son to practice or spending time while taking your daughter to her recital. In the text Double Daddy, the phenomenon of daddy stress affects the executive office to the rank and file, and a growing number of single dads may feel it most. Married fathers are hardly immune. This supports the idea of society’s expectation of fathers, because dads are to work and make money, not necessarily to worry about their kids until work is done. Fathers should worry financially...

Poverty

...Mr. Clark, Comp. 1 Formal Essay #1 (Final Draft) 02.09.11 Paycheck-to-Paycheck A popular phrase when out with friends is “I’m so broke.” However, it’s just a figure of speech, right? Most of us are fortunate enough to be well off with finances and have the luxury to have a little shopping spree here and there occasionally. But for the Millers that’s not the case at all. They have to live paycheck-to-paycheck and barely make ends meet. The town of Wanaque, New Jersey is very small, three miles long to be exact. But in this small town there are all types of social and economic classes from very poor to very wealthy. A family with a set of twins and another child just hitting elementary school would certainly be affected by this economy, yet the Millers still fight to keep their family functional. People take many things for granted like food, water, and shelter. Most of us can simply pay our utilities bills, sleep under a safe roof, and go grocery shopping when your refrigerator is empty. For the Millers it’s a different story. Anna Miller, mother of three, works part-time as a nanny for two homes and in retail. Eric Miller has been working at the same job for the past six years, and although he gets a holiday bonus every Christmas, he has never gotten a raise. Their three kids, twins Jason and Justin, and third child Jared are all attending the middle school in town. The family lives on the outskirts of our town in a neighborhood that’s not so great. They live...

Responsibility and Determination

...Personal Responsibility and Determination Even though life gets in the way, personal responsibility is the way that I can take charge of my life. As an individual I am accountable for everything that I do because I am the only person that can determine how successful I will be in college and the workplace. Only through my determination and hard work can I steer toward accomplishing my goals that I have set for myself. It is important to keep my expectations realistic and achievable while setting the bar high enough to keep life interesting. My personal responsibility and accountability can be controlled and maintained by good time management and organization. I can manage my time by dividing up my days to work on my days to fit in time for God, my family, work and my education. By setting a specific time that I am going to work on my studies, I should be able to concentrate on the work without too much stress and neglecting my duties as a mother. Simply having the tools for school available when I need them will help me keep me on track with my education and all that it entails. Organization is already a huge part of my life because when I am organized with my time, job, and home, I find it much easier to relax. Prioritizing everyday activities at home such as laundry, working in the yard, and general household duties help me allocate my time to the things that are most important. So often, life presents us with things that “need” to be done but we always have...

Women in the Media

...The Image of Women in The Media Cheneka Wright PHI 208: Ethic and Moral Reasoning Instructor: Justin Murray June 7, 2016 We all seen the different stereotypes that the media has portray women to be from the femme fatale, the supermom, the sex kitten, the nasty corporate climber. Whatever the role, television, film and popular magazines are full of images of women and girls who are typically white, desperately thin, and made up to the hilt—even after slaying a gang of vampires or dressing down a Greek phalanx. There has to be said that there have been some strides that have been made in which the way that women are portrayed in films, television, and even in magazines, and this has been over the last few decades. The presence as well as influence of women behind the scenes has also grown in many ways that were not so before. But have we come far enough. So my question is Has the Portrayal of Women in Today’s Society Health Role Models to Our Young People of Today? With the television shows that are aired on a day to day basis it’s hard to expect the portrayal of women to be any less than what it is…..negative. Is there an obligation for the media to show young people a more positive image of women or is it a duty of the parents? The notion of common good does not just happen. Establishing and maintaining it is the responsibility of everyone. Maintaining the social conditions from which we all benefit requires the cooperative efforts of all citizens. These efforts pay...

Cracked Ceiling

...to see if women’s voting in the Senate has changed the overall culture of the Senate. In 1991, Clarence Thomas’s confirmation hearing for a spot on the Supreme Court was contested in the Senate involving allegations raised by Anita Hill. Only two female were Senators at the time, Nancy Kassebaum of Kansas and Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, neither served on the committee. After this confirmation hearing, a wave started in America, not a huge wave, but a wave nonetheless. While only five Senators does not seem like a lot, it is still better than two. And while holding twenty-two percent of the Senate seems low, it is still better than five percent. Women have to fight an uphill battle when it comes to running for office, she needs to be supermom, with a faithful husband, and being gentle but firm. These are just a few stereotypes women have to fight against. Every election, women gain more and more, one more seat, one more district won, this needs to be the goal. Slowly making the way to fifty percent, because we need the voices of women at not only the state level but the national level as well. History of Ads

...Miss representation” Carol Pardun writes, “Is advertising a mirror of society? Or an agent of change? The basic premise is something like this: if advertising is a mirror of society, then the advertising industry is not really to blame for all the problems associated with bad advertising. We’re to blame.” Introduction Advertising is the process of communication whereby a person or group of people are persuaded to take some form of action, usually to make a purchase or participate in a particular behaviour. Studies undertaken by the Media Awareness Network estimate that on average, the typical North American will see 3000 ads per day (2010). With such a high level of advertising around consumers every day, is it likely that advertising shapes society, or that it merely mirrors pre-existing social trends? This is important because should advertising shape society, the high numbers of advertisements in existence could have a substantial impact to society’s wellbeing, as well as the ethical issues surrounding the messages and behaviours advertisers are trying to achieve. The question of advertising as a mirror vs. creator of culture is one of the most debated issues of the relationship between advertising and society. Does the image of woman represented in advertising shapes society or mirrors already prevailing social trends? Hypothesis The advertising media produces messages, images and ideas of woman, which therefore affect the process of social change. Conclusion ...

Portrayal of Women in Media

...Taylor Barto English 101 Holman 4/4/2012 Portrayal of Women in the Media In society today attractiveness can be the base of the empire that one builds. A certain look could be the entire reason someone gets a role in a movie or television show. Everything today is flashier, bigger, better, and more glamorous than before so why would women fall to any exception? These women on television can all play different roles, for example, the corporate climber, the supermom, the social butterfly, the ruthless villainess, but they all have one common denominator; their attractiveness. The women seen on television are beautiful, thin, and primarily white. These are the types of women the media wants us to strive to be like because it boosts their ratings. How many people would watch a television show about someone’s life that was less successful and less attractive? Many would agree that the last 30 years some progress has been made in how the media portray women in film, television, and magazines and there has also been a growth in the presence and influence of women in the media. Nevertheless, female stereotypes continue to thrive in the media we view every day. The media’s portrayal of women plays a significant impact on the effects to body image and self-esteem to implications in sports and politics. One current popular show that many young adults watch on television is a show, Gossip Girl. Gossip Girl follows the lives of Manhattan’s Upper East Side socialites. Each show...

Being considered a minority myself, I was able to relate and understand to most of the topics that were brought up. What I learned more about my ethnicity (African American) were the different people involved during the civil right movement. I was able to learn who made long lasting impressions during that time.   The minority group that I found the most interesting, and enjoyed learning the most about was the Native Americans. I never knew there were all these different organizations that catered specifically to Native Americans. I learned a lot about their culture and views of the world and things they went through and still go through to this very day. It was very eye opening for me.  Trends will definitely continue to shape the face of the future of United States. United States is basically considered a melting...

Instead, she discovered that Stewart Memorial Hospital nurses in Tyne Valley also experience unacceptable stress levels due to budget cuts and staff shortages. “There can be a lot of demands made on you,” says Noreen. “The workload can get quite strenuous at times.” With no vacations during her first year at Stewart, Noreen’s scheduled days off were precious time to recharge her batteries. Unfortunately, those moments were fewer than she had hoped. “We’re faced with being called back on our days off,” Noreen says. “It is trying at times.” Canadian nurses and other health care workers are feeling some of the highest levels of stress and burnout of any occupation across the country.
