Nations are maintaining a variety of welfare programs to rule out the effects of poverty today. In the United States, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is designed to end hunger and improve the health of many low-income families. In addition, this program fights malnutrition and ensures the family to maintain a healthy diet. However, this program is beneficial for some families, yet it has its flaws. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program should consider altering its program requirements and monitor the people who apply for it. Although the benefits of SNAP are admirable, I believe the laws behind the program must be altered. Families accepted for the assistance are not drug tested, but I believe they should be. As an employee at a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, I experience many men and women coming in and purchasing their food while they are under the influence of marijuana. Standing at the end of my register, I watch families come in, fill their buggies up with name brand food, and utilize their Nutritional Assistance benefits. Although SNAP was designed for the low-income families to maintain a healthy diet, junk food is the only thing that their benefits are used for. The SNAP should emphasize the rule of healthy eating (Are). …show more content…
The supporters believe that the people that are on drugs should not be declined for these assistance programs. Just because people are on drugs does not mean that they are bad people and do not need help. People who are addicted to drugs need the extra help so they know someone is there for them. In addition, healthy eating is not a good choice for everyone because some may have allergies or cannot force themselves to eat these healthy foods. Most of the food bought may be unhealthy, but they are convenient for families after a long day of work. SNAP is a very beneficial program for low-income families in the United

Welfare and Unemployment Policies

...policies. In writing this essay it will identify that the upsurges of welfare and unemployment are delicately intertwined due to policy changes enacted by federal and state legislature. To define welfare it is a term used to describe the assistance received to individuals who are unable to provide for themselves due to living below poverty. This assistance is provided by government agencies (Issitt, 2013). The Welfare Reform Act was meant to get people off of government assistance known as Welfare and introduce them to the work force. There became conditions for people who can obtain benefits; they must work a mandatory of 20 hours after two years of government aid. Welfare Reform provided more funding for the care of children so that mothers can seek out employment (Issitt, 2013). “The idea was to transition people from lives of dependency on welfare to lives of independence in the labor force. As the number of families on welfare declined, federal officials and policy planners wondered if the success of the Wisconsin program could be duplicated at the national level” (Levin-Waldman, 2012). Certain states set limits on the amount of time a family can receive cash assistance from the government, but other types of programs are available through government assistance for example food stamps which now is referred to as The supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. This program is local and state initiated although it is a federal government program (Twyman, 2014). The federal...

Essay Week 9 Com155

...Compare Contrast Essay Week 9 COM 155 Winston Miller Whole Foods versus Processed Foods Did you know that Cancer can be caused by the food you eat? Studies reveal that eating processed food on a regular or constant basis can be the cause of cancer, heart disease and many other health problems. Processed foods are any foods that are changed from their natural form. Many people buy these foods at the grocery store on a daily basis not realizing the potential health risk. Processed foods are preserved with chemicals, additives, and colors as well as sweeteners, and have very long shelf lives. Aspartame is a substitute sweetener which is used in most sugar substitutes such as “Sweet N Low,” “Equal,” and “Splenda.” Aspartame’s appeal is that it has less calories than real sugar but it has been linked to causing problems like Multiple Sclerosis. Most people are attracted to processed foods because they are fast and easy to prepare. There are other processed foods that have been linked to diseases such as: Trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, and monosodium glutamate or MSG. Trans fats are found in all processed foods and fast food. They are linked to heart disease, cancer, skin issues, learning disabilities, and stunted growth. High fructose corn syrup is widely used in the US and it has been found that Americans ingest over 67 pounds of it a year. Some of the diseases associated with the use of high fructose corn syrup are cardio vascular disease, hypo...

Domestice Violence in the Lives of Black Women in the U.S.

...Vazaskia V. Crockrell-Caldwell Prof. Margaret Griesse T SOC 455: Sociology of Gender 8 December 2014 Domestic Violence in the Lives of Black Women in the U.S. This essay will explore the cause and impact of domestic violence in the lives of black women in the U.S. It will provide general information, such as the definition of domestic violence, statistics, and resources to help survivors leave domestic violence relationships. Following the review of the literature I identify areas which need further research. Since I can remember black women have been characterized as mean and argumentative, but also strong and self-sacrificing for their families. Black families on TV were always portrayed as single mother households. In my community there was also a reoccurring reality of domestic violence against women. This was is in direct contrast to stereotypes I heard about white women, who were portrayed as weak, frail and needing to be protected. Examples include June Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver and the Brady Bunch. But what justified the brutality of domestic violence against black women then and now? In 2011, black females were murdered at a rate more than two and a half times higher than white females: 2.61 per 100,000 versus 0.99 per 100,000. [1] In the U.S. domestic violence against black women has escalated. In 2010, Marissa Alexander an African American woman shot a warning shot at the wall in order to scare Rico Gray, her estranged, abusive...

...section Vi essay forms Many people use the term “essay” to mean any paper written for a class. In actuality, there are many different types of essays, each of which has a unique purpose, form, and style. We call these different types of essays “modes of discourse,” and they include expository, persuasive, and comparecontrast essays to name just a few. This section of the Guide has a dual purpose. First, various types of essays are described and suggestions are included about how to approach each particular type of writing. Second, the sample essays are good tools for you to see how these different essays look in their final form. These are not templates (no essay can be a carbon copy of another even in form), but they will give you a good idea of what a final piece of writing for each mode of discourse looks like. It would be advantageous to critically analyze the form and content of each sample against the instruction for how to write each type of essay. chapter 21 expository essays Jennifer propp An expository essay explains something using facts rather than opinions. The purpose of this type of essay is to inform an audience about a subject. It is not intended to persuade or present an argument of any kind. Writing this type of essay is a good way to learn about all the different perspectives on a topic. Many students use the expository essay to explore a variety of topics, and do so in a wide range of formats, including “process” and “definition”...

...ork2012 - 2013 Catalog A Message from the President “Sullivan University is truly a unique and student success focused institution.” I have shared that statement with numerous groups and it simply summarizes my basic philosophy of what Sullivan is all about. When I say that Sullivan is “student success focused,” I feel as President that I owe a definition of this statement to all who are considering Sullivan University. First, Sullivan is unique among institutions of higher education with its innovative, career-first curriculum. You can earn a career diploma or certificate in a year or less and then accept employment while still being able to complete your associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree by attending during the day, evenings, weekends, or online. Business and industry do not expand or hire new employees only in May or June each year. Yet most institutions of higher education operate on a nine-month school year with almost everyone graduating in May. We remained focused on your success and education, and continue to offer our students the opportunity to begin classes or to graduate four times a year with our flexible, year-round full-time schedule of classes. If you really want to attend a school where your needs (your real needs) come first, consider Sullivan University. I believe we can help you exceed your expectations. Since words cannot fully describe the atmosphere at Sullivan University, please accept my personal invitation to visit and experience...

Cooperative learning is a successful teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. Each member of a team is responsible not only for learning what is taught but also for helping teammates learn, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement. WHY USE IT? Documented results include improved academic achievement, improved behavior and attendance, increased self-confidence and motivation, and increased liking of school and classmates. Cooperative learning is also relatively easy to implement and is inexpensive. HOW DOES IT WORK? Here are some typical strategies that can be used with any subject, in almost any grade, and without a special curriculum: Group Investigations are structured to emphasize higher-order thinking skills such as analysis and evaluation.
