One graveyard shift for Sutton, which he dreaded working like most who were resentful when on this shift. On this shift, like most departments, the LAPD assigned all rookies “to get the requisite seasoning: bad hours, hot calls, drunks, druggies, strippers, and desperate gamblers” (Sutton, 2005, p. 25). The 24 year olds suicide was especially hard on Sargent Suttons rookie cop because he was just the same age and struggled to understand. Something veteran cops learn through experience, that many situations have no explanation for them to understand leaving them wondering. What the Sargent was not prepared for was for a desperate father to pull up to see his sons’ lifeless body. The father collapsed in Suttons arms, pouring his emotions out to someone he did not even know, repeating “a father should not have to bury his son” (Sutton, 2005, p. 35).
