Reinventing Ericsson - International Business Case

...1. How should Svanberg go about reorganizing Ericsson’s marketing, sales and R&D? How much should they be centralized or decentralized? What would be the likely consequences of such actions? In terms of marketing, a more centralized approach would be preferable. The function should probably reside at the top level of the company, allowing for synergy and marketing of complete solutions in a unified way, whereas market-specific communication would be wasteful in terms of recreating the same messages multiple times. Another approach would be moving the marketing functions into each business unit; however this again does not support the diverse nature of the company. Either solution helps reduce overhead costs and streamline communication; however with different focuses depending on how much actual crossover there is in the marketing communication between different solutions. The sales side needs its own administrative layer. The current style of direct CEO involvement was more befitting Hellström, who came from a sales background. Not only could the operations do with a more sales-centric person overseeing this part of the business, but the CEO is already extremely taxed by the need to involve himself in the details of the R&D decisions and otherwise the broad scope of the company. Taking the direct responsibility of sales away from the CEO and making it a separate function would free up valuable CEO time, which would help assure the company stays on the right course....

...Current Issues in Auditing Volume 9, Issue 2 2015 Pages P36–P41 American Accounting Association DOI: 10.2308/ciia-51279 PRACTITIONER SUMMARY How Client Identification and Client Commitment Uniquely Influence Auditor Objectivity David N. Herda and James J. Lavelle SUMMARY: This article summarizes our recent study, ‘‘Client Identification and Client Commitment in a Privately Held Client Setting: Unique Constructs with Opposite Effects on Auditor Objectivity’’ (Herda and Lavelle 2015), which examines how individual auditors’ identification with, and commitment to, privately held audit clients affects their objectivity. Based on a survey of 102 external auditors, we find that client identification is distinct from client commitment. This distinction is important because identification as a construct is easily and often confused with commitment, and the terms are often used interchangeably. Client identification entails auditors perceiving themselves as one with the client. In contrast, client commitment reflects a responsibility for and dedication to the client, but the auditor and client remain separate psychological entities. Consistent with prior research, we find that client identification impairs auditor objectivity. Conversely, we find that client commitment enhances auditor objectivity. Keywords: organizational identification; organizational commitment; social identity theory; social exchange theory; auditor objectivity. INTRODUCTION This paper...

Mobile Applications Market

...in 2017. Apple's App Store is the clear leader in monetisation of mobile apps and will keep the number one position during the forecast period. Google Play and Windows Phone Store are anticipated to be number two and three respectively in 2017. The increase in app downloads during 2012 comes mainly from Apple App Store, Google Play and some of the third party app stores. Third party app stores pushed Android to become the leading platform in terms of app downloads during 2012. While many Western third party app stores are struggling, the situation is different in other parts of the world. Third party app stores are especially popular in China and other markets where Google Play hasn't become the default on-device app store said Johan Svanberg, Senior Analyst, Berg Insight. Monetisation is however particularly challenging in these markets, even though free to download strategies such as in-app advertising and in-app payments are promising and have been moderately successful. The most important trends on the app market today are the popularity of free to download apps and multiplatform support. Furthermore, publishers commonly incorporate social features, where some build their own social platforms and others use existing social networks in order to expand their application user base and increase...

The presentation should be no more than 10 minutes. Please use visuals and a power point for your presentation. The Issue The Deepwater Horizon oil spill was an oil spill that began in April 20, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect, considered the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. It claimed 11 lives when the oil rig exploded and spilled 4.9 million barrels or 210 million US gal of oil for 87 days. It was finally capped on September 19, 2010. Numerous investigations explored the causes of the explosion and record-setting spill. Notably, the U.S. government's September 2011 report pointed to defective cement on the well, faulting mostly BP, but also rig operator Transocean and contractor Halliburton. Earlier in 2011, a White House commission likewise blamed BP and its partners for a series of cost-cutting decisions and an insufficient safety system, but also concluded that the spill resulted from "systemic" root causes and "absent significant reform in both industry practices and government policies, might well recur". In November 2012, BP and...

Bp Oil Spill Paper

...As we all know, the BP spill of 2010 was both catastrophic and costly. In April 2010, BP’s Transocean drilling rig Deep water Horizon sank in the Gulf of Mexico killing over 10 people and spewing more than 200 million gallons of oil into our ocean water. This historic and devastating spill is now labeled as worst in U.S. history due to its crippling economic factors throughout Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. It has taken us a year to restore our relationships and our strong presence in the energy sector so we must have a plan in place to get us back on track. In the presentation I will be discussing BP’s planning function of management as it relates to the organization’s goals and strategies. I will then discuss the influence that legal issues, ethics, and corporate social responsibility have had on management planning at BP. Last, I will analyze the influence that legal issues, ethics, and corporate social responsibility have had on management planning at BP. Global demand for energy is expected to increase by 50% between now and 2030. Eighty-five percent of the energy to meet this demand is expected to come from fossil fuels (BP.com, 2012). In order for BP to recover and tap into this 50% increase, we must first plan and analyze our current situation. In this unique industry, anticipating the future has become even more important than before. We must first create a plan that will not only guide the recovery process...

Bp Oil Spill

...The BP oil spill has become widely accepted as the worst manmade environmental calamity in US history. The disaster wasn’t a catastrophe solely because of the extent of harm it caused the environment, but also because of the lack of concern and benevolence BP (primarily their CEO Tony Hayward) showed towards most stakeholders. This paper will give an account of many of the primary errors that were committed by BP. Also, specific dates will be used as a timeline in order to emphasize BP’s lack of concern and ability to act in a legal and ethical manner during the crisis. On April 20, 2010, a Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers and causing the worst environmental disaster in US history (BBC News, 2010). Although there were obvious concerns for the environment, many of these worries were eased when the US Coast Guard announced that they were confident that there was no oil leaking from the well; which was located nearly a mile below the ocean’s surface. Given the depth and location at which BP was working, it would seem illogical not to have a crisis management plan in place. Unfortunately for BP, the company never acknowledged any real risk of a Deepwater oil spill. Thus, BP did not appear to have any related response plan in place. As they previously sought to expand Deepwater oil exploration, along with the rest of the oil industry, BP categorized a Deepwater spill as decidedly unlikely and claimed that if such a spill occurred...
