Introduction
Growing up with three sisters and a successful mother, I constantly heard about the struggle women continuously face in the workforce. My mother, having outstanding credentials, constantly reiterated to us how she had to knock down some barriers due to her sex. Because of her female empowering approach of raising her daughters, I read many books growing up about prominent women of our time and of years before. I never truly observed the misogynistic instances she told us about until I matured and reached high school. During my senior year of high school, I elected to take AP Government. During the year, we closely examined the Primary elections for the 2008 Presidential campaign. Over the course of the year we discussed the importance …show more content…
According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the United States ranks 91st in Women in National Legislature Positions (Lawless & Fox). I became fascinated on the depiction of women in our society as a whole and wanted to focus on how the media contributes. I wanted to observe the cycle that results with the media’s portrayal of women and how that affects the number of women in office, therefore only reinforcing the stereotype. In order to understand where the United States stands on this matter, I am going to analyze the nation of Sweden’s gender depiction in media and other realms and how that correlates to women in office. Observing Sweden’s approach to these societal aspects will help understand how they have a more egalitarian government than most. The nation of Sweden constantly ranks in the top five nations when it comes to presence of women in high governmental positions. In 2002, women occupied over 45 % of their seats in their national parliament (Hepburn & Simon, 100). Even though Sweden surpasses the United with their strong presence of women in politics, they continuously face challenge that they must address to inflict a positive portrayal of women in their nation. Just like the United States, Sweden has various sources of media outlets that could affect the amount of women in parliamentary offices, but their methods of preventing misogyny overpower the United State’s

Explicit examples were shown of alcohol promotion exploiting the themes of sexual, sporting and lifestyle success, often in direct violation of advertising codes. Furthermore, many of the advertising examples displayed images of excessive consumption. In addition, the Conference noted...

In 1941, that film was Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane. Welles produced, directed, wrote, and starred in the movie at age twenty-five, playing a newspaper magnate from a young man to old age. While the movie was not a commercial success initially (powerful newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, whose life was the inspiration for the movie, tried to suppress it), it was critically praised for its acting, story, and directing. Citizen Kane’s dramatic camera angles, striking film noir–style lighting, nonlinear storytelling, montages, and long deep-focus shots were considered technically innovative for the era. Over time, Citizen Kane became revered as a masterpiece, and in 1997 the American Film Institute named it the Greatest American Movie of All Time. “Citizen Kane is more than a great movie; it is a gathering of all the lessons of the emerging era of sound,” film critic Roger Ebert wrote.1 CHAPTER 6 ○ MOVIES 185 (c) Bedford/St. Martin's bedfordstmartins.com 1-457-62096-0 / 978-1-457-62096-6 MOVIES A generation later...
