Sweeney Todd: Robert E. Lee High School Musical
I am not a fan of horror or scary theatrics, so I was a little nervous about going to see Sweeney Todd, even if it was just a high school musical. I was quite impressed overall with the musical. The young actors and actresses did very well performing the story of Sweeney Todd. The story of Sweeney Todd was actually quite interesting. I was shocked that an elderly woman would even think to serve humans in pie form, but I guess she had to do what she felt necessary to keep her business open. The musical was not as scary as I initially thought it would be. The original musical’s music and lyrics were written by Stephen Sondheim. One of the main characters Sweeney Todd was played by Octavio de la Pena. He played his character very well. Throughout the musical Octavio never went out of character and he portrayed the different emotions well. He even used an English accent to go with the setting of the musical. The young man had great diction and his inflection was very natural. He did not sound as though he was acting, but that he was actually feeling each emotion. He also had great diction while singing songs that required him to sing very fast. I was able to understand every word as he sped through lyrics in the songs. I was surprised by one scene when Sweeney Todd actually showed some sort of compassion and allowed an unsuspecting victim to live. Sweeney Todd saw the man’s wife and child just as he was about to strike the man. Sweeney Todd thought of his wife and daughter, Johanna, and how they felt when he was exiled, so he gave the man shave and spared his life. Through all the horror Sweeney Todd was still somewhat human inside. Ms. Lovett, played by Lizzie Poncio, was an interesting character. Lizzie was very animated while acting as Ms. Lovett. She also sung very well. Lizzie was a great choice to play Ms. Lovett because the role just seemed to fit her so well. I felt Ms. Lovett left out that Sweeney Todd’s wife did not die on purpose because she wanted him to believe his wife was dead so she could have him to herself. In the end, Ms. Lovett pays for her silence with her life. I really enjoyed this character. Anthony “Tony” Hope, played by Isaac Palma, and Johanna, played by Aria Braswell, were both played well by the actor and actress. Even through Anthony Hope’s singing, he was able to convey to the audience his deep love for Johanna. Aria did very well at portraying Johanna’s kind but desperate personality as she tries to find refuge from Judge Turpin. When Johanna had to be a sailor, the actress did a great job at “switching” characters by pretending to be a man while still keeping the essence of Johanna present in the audience’s mind. Aria also had great diction, especially when singing the faster songs in the musical. The Beggar Woman was an interesting character because she ended up being Sweeney Todd’s wife. Ironically, Sweeney Todd, not knowing she is his wife, kills the Beggar Woman. To me her role was somewhat important because her death led to the death of Ms. Lovett. Another seemingly small character role was Pirelli. Pirelli was stuck up and his challenge led to Sweeney Todd’s decision on how to get revenge for Judge Turpin treating his daughter badly. Pirelli is the first of Sweeney Todd’s unsuspecting victims. Maybe if Pirelli was not so cheap he would not have taken the “free” shave of death from Sweeney Todd. A shave from Sweeney Todd cost him something more than any sum of money could buy, his life. At first I thought that Tobias “Toby” Ragg was not that important to the story of Sweeney Todd. I was also surprised to learn that he was probably no older than twelve or thirteen. Going into the musical, I thought that Tobias Ragg was a young man somewhere in his late teens or early twenties. Tobias Ragg worked for Pirelli and is unaware, in the beginning, that Sweeney Todd has killed his master. Without someone to work for, Toby begins to work in the pie shop with Ms. Lovett. He begins to love Ms. Lovett like a son loves his mother. Travis Anderson, the actor playing Tobias Ragg, did very well at transitioning through the emotionally states that Toby experienced throughout the musical. Toby went from an innocent worker to a crazy murderer. It was ironic that Sweeney Todd killed to save his child and Toby was only a child and killed Sweeney Todd. Toby figured out the secret of Ms. Lovett and Sweeney Todd killing and selling human flesh in meat pies. I did not think that Toby would be the one to kill Sweeney Todd. The musical aspect of Sweeney Todd was great. I was not expecting to see an orchestra present but they were fantastic. The instruments that the orchestra was composed of were the violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, brass, percussion, piano and harp. Hearing the live sound effects and music live made the musical even better because there were not and technical difficulties with the music. The orchestra’s timing was great and I kind of forgot that they were even there. It just seemed like I was watching a movie with the music in the background and the music was being played on a cd. Aside from the actors and actresses, the music added to the moods of the play. It also increased the suspense of the climax of the musical. The songs that were sung during the performance were The Ballad of Sweeney Todd, No Place like London, The Worst Pies in London, Poor Thing, My Friends, Green Finch and Linnet Bird, Ah,Miss, Johanna Part I, Johanna Part II, Pirelli’s Miracle Elixir, Pirelli’s Entrance, The Contest, Wait, Pirelli’s Death, Kiss Me Part I, Ladies in Their Sensitivities, Kiss Me Part II, Pretty Women, Epiphany, A Little Priest, God, That’s Good!, I am a Lass, By the Sea, Wigmaker Sequence, The Letter, Not While I’m Around, Parlor Songs, Fogg’s Asylum/Fogg’s Passacaglia, City on Fire, Searching, Judge’s Return, and Final Scene. Some songs that seemed to be a little more important were The Ballad of Sweeney Todd, Pirelli’s Miracle Elixir, God, That’s Good!, By the Sea, and City on Fire. The Ballad of Sweeney Todd was important because it open and closes the musical. The ballad in a way explains what Sweeney Todd does but without giving away details. Pirelli’s Miracle Elixir was important because it was the introduction to the competition between Sweeney Todd and Pirelli. This song was also the introduction for Tobias Ragg. Pirelli’s Miracle Elixir is the first time we see Toby and his part continues to grow from then on. Motivation for murder was also provided for Sweeney Todd after the competition with Pirelli. By the Sea was a song about Ms. Lovett basically confessing her love for Sweeney Todd. She tells him she wants to go by the sea if her business stays good. She even mentions marriage. God, That’s Good was the introduction to Ms. Lovett’s meat pies. This is also how we know how Ms. Lovett was using the poor victims of Sweeney Todd. City on Fire was not necessarily important but something interesting happened while a smoke machine was being used. The fire alarms in the building began to go off but it went along with the song so many people did not notice. The flashing lights from the alarms, the loud beeping sound, and the voice talking all added to the effects of the musical. In conclusion, I enjoyed the overall experience of the play. I was really impressed with how well the students performed. I was even more impressed with the orchestra. Their timing was spot on throughout the whole performance and only made it even better. I was glad the music was live, which took away the opportunity for technical difficulties. I was especially excited to hear the various instruments played. Sometimes the orchestra would start with one group of instruments and progress to the whole orchestra playing together. All of the performers were great. The costumes and make-up made the characters more realistic. The singing was outstanding; not just by the individual performers but also by the ensemble.

...have a history like Sweeney Todd. This production features a psychologically-driven barber, filled with hatred because of a terrible past experience. This hatred brings out a monster in him, and he goes on a killing spree in London. He lures his victims into his shop with an awkward charm and slashes their throats with a straight razor. His victim's bodies are then dumped into the basement of the shop, where they are minced and cooked into meat pies that are sold in Mrs. Lovett's store. Mrs. Lovett is Sweeney Todd's accomplice in his scheme for revenge. She is infatuated with him and cannot help but to assist him with these crimes. This twisted plot, the setting, and the musical score make for a darker production that is not seen very often from Broadway acts. “For Sweeney Todd is surely the angriest major musical ever written, a sensibility that here becomes a galvanizing asset” (Ben Brantley 2005). A now dated production, Sweeney Todd premiered on March 1, 1979. This took place at Uris Theatre in New York City. The production was eventually closed but not before it had over 500 runs. The show was reopened near its ten year anniversary in 1989. This time, the show ran for almost 200 runs before it was shut down again. In 2005, it was decided that Sweeney Todd was to be opened for viewing again. This time, it was showed over 300 times. It was eventually decided to close Sweeney Todd yet again. There have been multiple revival productions of Sweeney Todd run by different production...

Movie Review : Sweeney Todd

...Political Science – I Comm 2 - K Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Movie Review) What would you do if everyone you love was taken away from you? Are you going to stand and stare and wait for them to return? Or would you dare to take revenge to the person who took everything from you? Here comes now the story of Benjamin Parker, or more known as Sweeney Todd. Benjamin Barker, arguably the most accomplished barber in all Victorian London, is married to the pretty Lucy, the two who have an infant daughter, Johanna. Lusting after Lucy, a sadistic judge named Turpin wrongfully has Barker sent to prison in Australia so that he can have Lucy to himself. Fifteen years later, Barker, who has rechristened himself Sweeney Todd, returns to London to seek revenge by killing Turpin and his accomplice Beadle Bamford, using the instruments of his trade to slit their throats. Below Todd's old barber shop is now a meat pie shop run by Mrs. Lovett, who admits to making the worst meat pies in London. She tells Todd that Lucy poisoned herself after being raped by Turpin, and that Johanna, now a young woman, is Turpin's ward. Johanna and a young honorable sailor named Anthony Hope, who Todd met, sailing into London, have fallen in love with each other from afar. Much like his feelings for Lucy, Turpin lusts after Johanna and wants to marry her, and thus he will do whatever he needs to get Anthony out of the way. Sweeny Todd the Barber

...Sweeney Todd The barber Sweeney Todd (aka the Demon Barber) was a character from a 19th Century penny dreadful1, made popular by Stephen Sondheim's musical, a razor-wielding barber who killed his customers for cash and turned them into meat pies. He first appeared in 1846 as a secondary character in a short story called The String of Pearls a Romance by Thomas Prest, which was published in The People's Periodical. A hack playwright by the name of George Dibdin Pitt, who commonly filched other people's stories, dramatised the story for the stage as The String of Pearls The Fiend on Fleet Street, and advertised it as 'founded on fact'. The play debuted at London's Hoxton Theatre on 1 March, 1847, and ever since then people have speculated as to whether Sweeney Todd really had existed, or if he was simply a fictional bogeyman invented to sate the appetite of the morbid Victorian imagination. Did Sweeney Todd really exist? Up until recently, nobody knew, A number of daily newspapers at the time had reported real-life horror stories that bore certain similarity to the ghastly tale of Sweeney Todd. Stories of fainting ladies aside, the Victorian community had an enormous, morbid appetite for all things ghastly. Shocking tales of crime like this would have been spread through word of mouth like wildfire, although they were also probably embellished along the way. ...

Sweeney Todd Hollywood

...Since the introduction of sound to film in the late 1920’s and early 1930s, the musical has remained a constant force in the industry; called “Hollywood’s most durable product” (p 314). From the extravagance and excess of Busby Burkley’s art deco musicals in the 1930s to Arthur Freed’s ‘stable of stars’ including Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, the musical has often made an appeal to a wide range of audiences. As we move from the past to the present however, Sweeney Todd released in 2007 gives an almost bastardized version of what one would call a ‘classical’ musical.
Stylistically, Sweeney Todd fits into several genres of film besides just musicals, including: german expressionism, horror, and exploitation films. Director Tim...

Sweeney Todd Contrast

...Tim Burton wrote the British American horror and musical fantasy, Sweeney Todd: The Demon on Fleet Street. It is normal for a play or musical to experience exceptional changes when it is transformed into a great movie. However, the 2007 film adjustment of "Sweeney Todd" remains genuinely unwavering to the first 1979 phase musical. This shouldn't imply that that there were no progressions (there were a few), yet rather that the real characters and plot focuses coordinate in both forms. Some say this piece was not as popular before the movie came out starting Johnny Depp, but to each its own. This essay will include the compare and contrast of the musical and the film, Sweeney Todd. A standout amongst the most extreme contrasts between the movie and the musical...

...actors. The Nightmare Before Christmas meets its musical criteria with more than ten songs in the entire movie. Three of its most popular numbers being “This is Halloween, Jacks Lament, and What’s this?” This film was written by Tim Burton, another movie I could compare it to and that he directed would be Sweeny Todd : The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, it is also in the musical genre. “It tells the story of a serial killer. Typically, however, musicals depict lighter fare, and indeed, in each case mentioned they make what might have been more difficult material easier for the audience to relate to.” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011, Ch. 8.2). I feel that musicals are more of a required taste for movie lovers. I myself enjoy them as well as all movie genres, as the book says, they further add to the story and include more details and feelings into the movie. Sweeny Todd can also be added to the horror genre. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_hgrfZVlJA References A Nightmare Before Christmas This is Halloween www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOtEdhKOMgQ Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C. Mulholland Drive

...Deciphering Mulholland Drive Mulholland Drive is a twisted and exhilarating movie directed by David Lynch. The movies tells the story of a Canadian women, Diane Selwyn, who moves to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. For the most of the movie, we are thrown into a dream Diane has. In this dream many of the characters and people in her actual life are integrated into her dream with new identities. The last part of the movie we are brought back to Diane’s actual reality. Only once I was brought into Diane’s reality did I realize the importance of the fantasy. I believe Diane has realized the hard, cruel reality of Hollywood and this has caused her to have a breakdown. She has lost the love of her life to this Hollywood scene and is faced with the fact that she is a failed actress. These inner conflicts and struggles have caused her despair and ultimately her demise. David Lynch is highly praised in this movie because of his ability to mesh fantasy and reality. The fantasy part digs into Diane’s deepest desires and conflicts. A lot of the things that happen in the dream part of the movie, I feel display the way she wished things had happened, mostly with her relationship with Camille. In order to understand Mulholland Drive you must be able to distinguish between Diane’s dream and her reality. The movie starts with Diane arriving to Hollywood, she is very excited and thrilled for her new opportunity. In the fantasy Diane is introduced as Betty and is described...

To What Extent and in What Ways Does Romantic Writing Engage with Gender Politics?

...5. To what extent and in what ways does Romantic writing engage with gender politics? The study of Literature is inherently involved with a deconstruction of the complex and textured manner in which author’s attempt to express what it is to be human. To be human is a diverging experience between the sexes, both biological and socially, and consequently the extent of gender equitability within society has always been a prevalent and contended concern. An engagement with this contention will define gender politics for this essay. Jane Austen and Mary Shelley, writing at the beginning of the nineteenth-century, joined their female contemporaries in a growing generation of authoresses who forged careers in discipline of male authority. In this respect, they are inescapably engaging with gender politics. Margaret Kirkham comments that ‘this burgeoning of the female talent...was bound to have a profound effect upon any young woman beginning to write once it had occurred’, suggesting that, regardless of whether the female intended to represent female concerns within their work; a female, in becoming ‘an author, was, in itself, a feminist act’ (Kirkham 33). With the status of the authoress in mind whilst analysing Northanger Abbey and Frankenstein, this essay will focus how Austen and Shelley engage with gender politics through characterization and narrative form, and the female concerns they address, both implicitly and explicitly, throughout their texts. Austen predominately engages...

Douglas Sirk in All That Heaven Allows

...The role visual style plays in communicating the ideas, themes and issues raised by the film Before to the introduction of ‘auteur theory’ Douglas Sirk directed films that were illustrious for classical Hollywood narrative. However, he used his power as director to step outside of the Mainstream Hollywood narrative and stylistic conventions (Core 1994), using techniques such as mise-en-scene to communicate the ideas, themes and issues raised in his films. All That Heaven Allows directed by Sirk is a perfect example of his clever use of visual style to communicate themes of social status, repression and nature. The film was popular at its release as ‘critics were well aware that Sirk's films attracted a humorous popular reception’ (Philip Core p132) but was critically dismissed as a women’s weeping movie (Nick James, 1994). Told from a women's point of view and post WWII exposure gives a sense of context and what life was like for women of the time. As Carrie quotes from ‘walden’s book’ it becomes evident that mise-en-scene enriches the film and gets an insight into post WW2 life. Carrie is trapped, however it is not just the dialogue of the film that is used to expose her entrapment. Carrie is represented as a prisoner in her own home. The use of the TV double comments on what Carrie is going through. Sirk presents the television as a symbol of repression and defeat, a tiresome life. Sirk uses the television set to explore the theme of Carrie as an onlooker on life and...

Experimental psychologists were the first to engage in I/O work. Their main purpose was applying the new principles of psychology to problems in organizations. Two of these experimental psychologists were Hugo Munsterberg and Walter Dill Scott. These two psychologists would be credited as being the main founds of I/O Psychology. Both of these experimental psychologists were university professors who became involved in applying psychology to problems of organizations. An engineer by the name of Frederick Winslow Taylor would have a major influence on the I/O field. Taylor studied employee productivity and developed an approach which he would later call "Scientific Management." Taylor used scientific management to handle production workers in factories. This approach included four principles which would guide organizational practices. Today, his same ideas are still used. Furthermore, two more individuals had an influence on the engineering side combined with psychology.
