Dropbox Case Study

...Issue: Dropbox faced three major issues in 2013 related to future profitability: customer growth in B2C and B2B markets, free-to-pay user conversion, and competitive threats. Describe how each of these issues came about and why they are critical for Dropbox going forward. Do you see any other major issues? * When Dropbox first launched in 2007 the cloud storage market was already flooded with smaller competitors. Getting business customers was tough due to bureaucratic delays in getting them to integrate the services into their operations. It was also hard to get customers to pay because mainstream consumers weren’t yet used to using cloud-storage services. Analysis: What information in the case can help you formulate a strategy to address the issues above? 1. How effective was the 2010 consumer acquisition strategy? Calculate the cost of the referral campaign and the increase in annual revenue. Assume a 12% install rate (p. 3), a 1.6% free-to-pay conversion rate (p. 4), a $1.32 cost per free user (p. 4), and $120 revenue per paying user (p. 3). Do not worry about the free additional space that accompanies referrals. * The 2010 consumer acquisition strategy, over the course of 5 years, led to Dropbox holding a large share of the consumer cloud storage market. Their conversion rate went from 1.6% to 4.0%, which translates to $200-240 million in yearly revenue. After calculating the cost of the referral campaign and the increase in annual revenue, it came out...

Freemium Pricing at Dropbox

...Pricing at Dropbox In this case, we are asked to provide Dropbox some recommendations in order to address three major issues: the customer growth in B2C and B2B markets, the free-topay user conversion and the competitive threats. First, it is important to describe how each of these issues came about and why they are critical for Dropbox going forward. When A. Ferdowsi and D. Houston launched Dropbox in 2007, they knew that getting business customers would be tough due to bureaucratic delays in getting them to integrate the services into their operations. Another problem was that getting individuals to pay for Dropbox was hard because mainstream consumers were still not used to using cloud-storage services. To overcome that, they first focused on the individual consumer market (rather than corporate clients) and adopted a new pricing concept called “Freemium” which consists in giving away basic services for free (and thus only charging for premium versions). By coupling this “free way” to try the service with an efficient incentive program allowing people to get free storage upgrades, Dropbox was able to hold a large share of the consumer cloud storage market but also to indirectly penetrate the corporate world. Indeed, Houston’s goal was to get individuals to use and like Dropbox so much that they, in turn, got their employers to sign up as well. All this worked so well that they grew from 4 million users in 2010 to 200 million in 2013. The next step for Dropbox was...

Whole Foods Swot

...SWOT Analysis As Whole Foods Market, we pride ourselves on providing fresh organic food to our consumers. One of our major strengths is that we have a large emphasis on perishable fresh food, which provides a competitive advantage over some other popular grocery chains, such as Kroger and Wegmans2, whose primary focus is on prepackaged products1. Another strength for our company is that we have the highest sales per square foot in the supermarket industry3, while still keeping our prices competitive. We continue to attract a variety of people, trying to reach different market segments. However with all the success our company has had we do have several weaknesses. One major weakness for Whole Foods Market is that we have a very small international presence at the moment, with only seven stores in Canada and Six in the UK1. The sales from Whole Foods stores outside the United States only contribute 3% to the total revenue on our comapany1. Since we do no have much experience with opening stores internationally this could potentially be a problem when we plan to expand to China. In order to understand the Chinese market Whole Foods Market has analyzed the external factors of the environment. We discovered three opportunities for Whole Foods Market in China. One major opportunity is that there is a growing concern for food safety in China (Appendix Brynn). The standards for food safety vary greatly between provinces; and there have been many recent recalls on food in this country...
