In Blues Ain’t No Mockin’ Bird by Toni Cade Bambara, the author uses symbols in the story, like the giant hawk. The hawks both represent the cameramen and Granny and Granddaddy Cain at the same time. The hawks represent Granny and Granddaddy Cain because the camera men are intruding upon their lives, just as the hawks were being attacked in their own environment by Granddaddy Cain. The camera crew also attacks them by stereotyping the family, thinking they must be with the food stamp program, despite Granny growing her own vegetables, which one of the men pointed out; ‘”I see you grow your own vegetables.”’ However, the hawk may be a symbol for the cameramen as well.
