The inception of an idea can have powerful effects when used in the aggregate population of people. An idea is a thought or suggestion as to a possible course of action, and which can be spread from the minds of many. It can be resurrected from a previous age, or be created from a whim. In the film “V for Vendetta” the main protagonist V, resurrects ideas from a 400-year-old rebellious figure, also known as Guy Fawkes. He uses these idea’s to plant anarchy in the city of England so they could overthrow Norsefire, which is a party symbolic to a Nazi Regime. The plot in the film shows various symbols to have the viewer interpret for him or herself. The protagonist’s “Fawkesian” mask, his single lettered name, and the movie he watches within the …show more content…
When V meets the secondary protagonist “Evey”, he calls himself a villain. “Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate” (James McTeigue, V for Vendetta). Symbolic to Guy Fawkes, he was also known as a villain to the Church of England and King James. V’s name is also symbolic to the Larkhill Concentration Camp. The cell V was placed in had a roman numeral “V” as in 5. By having this on his cell, he names himself as a character to what Larkhill labeled his cell, and quoted many times through the movie, of what Larkhill created within that cell. He prevailed and escaped the facility, burned it down, and now uses his motives for revenge from the creators of Larkhill. He carries the burden of everyone dying, including Valerie, a lesbian that was also condemned to the Larkhill Concentration camp, in which V idolizes throughout the movie. Valerie was placed in cell 4, right next to V’s cell. As before she died, she wrote a note to the cell next to her, not knowing whom it was, but passed on her beliefs to V. The letter showed V that Valerie was not afraid of dying for her beliefs. The terrible happenings within Larkhill, from the experiments and tests, to the torturous environment, V’s name symbolizes strength and …show more content…
V transforms a part of his living quarters into a makeshift Concentration Camp. He abducts Evey and puts her in a cell. The reason for this charade V created was to incite the very beliefs he had throughout the movie onto Evey. He also wanted her to become fearless, as she once said was her weakness. He slipped her the note that Valerie once slipped V, which incited a psychological transformation within her mind, and in the conclusion of the movie, Evey becomes V’s

V for Vendetta Religious Elements Essay

...Carwana “Remember the idea, not the man” By: Karanveer Singh 998435304 Date: 12/2/2011 Word Count:1,488 James McTeigue’s V for Vendetta is an action packed film. It not only serves the purpose of entertaining the viewer but also has religious elements in it. The central belief of the movie is that an idea and symbol cannot be destroyed; it is impregnable. This belief in the movie is reinforced by Rituals that occur frequently in the film. I will draw on the concepts of ritual from Malory Nye’s Religion the basics and will argue that the use of the mask and the letter “V” in this film function as a method of ritualism and symbolism. Also, I will analyze ritualization and transformation through the stages of Rites of Passage and dispute that it transforms the character Evey’s life. The film V for Vendetta portrays the beliefs of idealism. The first few minutes of the film give a glimpse of the key message that is going to be depicted in the film. The prologue in the film shows that a man named Guy Forkes got caught and executed for trying to blow up the house of parliament in London England but his ideas and beliefs did not die, they fueled revolutions for generations to come. In the prologue of the film a narrator says “that remember the idea not the man, man can be killed and forgotten but the idea cannot be killed”. Towards the end of the film, when the thousands of common citizens rally to the parliament building, something to notice is that their march is orderly. During...

Revolution and Romance

...Michael Bennett Page 1 Dr. Alla Boldina ENG 110-60 REVOLUTION AND ROMANCE Creedy: “Why won’t you die!?” V: “Beneath this mask is more than flesh…there are ideas. And ideas are bulletproof.” With these words, the film, “V for Vendetta” dramatically demonstrates the power of ideas to challenge and overcome the evil of oppression. In film critic Robert Ebert’s review of “V for Vendetta,” he notes the power of ideas, especially the belief that people should not be afraid of their governments, but rather that governments should be afraid of their people. Although Ebert questions the necessity of fear, and believes that governments and people should be able to happily co-exist, I think he trivializes the significance of the film’s message. Although it is an in-depth, well written look at the story, it is one-sided. He gives credit to a novel written by Allen Moore in 1983, on which the film is based, and compares “V for Vendetta” to other movies and stories. The main character, V, is described in detail, and Ebert explains his purpose in the story. The other characters, however, are not mentioned very much, leaving the reader a bit blank. I appreciate that he mentions the main idea of the film, and is generous with quotations. I do fin d his criticism a bit excessive, as he puts down the mask that V wears because the lips don’t move and his vision would be obstructed. Ebert seems biased on behalf of London’s architecture, as he expresses his disappointment...

V for Vendetta New Beginings

...In the movie V for Vendetta, ‘V’ is a man who escaped an unfair captivity by the government as an experimental study. He vows himself to revenge and kill those responsible. He also becomes a rebel leader, fighting a violent terrorist crusade against dictatorship in Britain, set in the future and ruled by Norsefire, a fascist political party in a totalitarian government. The woman Evey, a protagonist in the film, is victim of an attempted rape by the secret police, when she knowingly breaks the law by leaving her house after curfew. The policemen used their status to create fear by threatening her in order to be respected and obeyed. In the opening scene, Lewis Prothero a TV host, announces that their successful country works through ‘Strength and Unity’, which is why immigrants, Muslims, homosexuals, diseases and terrorists all had to go, based on a ‘better’ judgment of their government’s religion, which in this movie is some sort of Christianity. ‘Strength through Unity, Unity through Faith’. The movie shows how government can manipulate its people, from fear to hope, Chancellor Adam Sutler was elected after a bioterrorist attack occurred which killed many. A cure for the virus getting discovered shortly after his election shows it was a plot engineered by Norsefire to gain power. The film makes plenty of political points and affronts the American government of today by making certain references about the war on terrorism and quoting the film “People should not fear their government...

Shawshank Redemption

...that is constructed by the mental realms. At least, that was Shawshank Redemption’s attempted conveyance; Dufresne’s character, conceptualized and manifested by the director Frank Darabont, both humanizes as well as critiques the imprisoned and the idea of imprisonment. Set in the 1940s, when Rita Hayworth, an over-the-top sex symbol in the American film industry, was alive and flourishing, Shawshank Redemption takes the ordinary lives of Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding (Morgan Freemand), Warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton), the hotshot Tommy Williams (Gil Bellows), and Brooks Hatlen (James Whitmore), and coalesces them altogether to set the stage for one of the greatest stories ever set in the dusty grounds of Shawshank State Penitentiary in Maine. Everything from Andy’s imprisonment to his eventual escape was integral events in Shawshank Redemption’s message regarding the necessity for humanity. Following, I will attempt to dissect the movie into three topics for analysis in the following paragraphs, with a conclusion which will reveal an overall reception of the movie as well as provide an evaluation. Symbolism is rife in Shawshank Redemption; everything from the walls that surround Shawshank State Penitentiary...

Living History

...___________________________ LIVING HISTORY Hillary Rodham Clinton Simon & Schuster New York • London • Toronto • Sydney • Singapore To my parents, my husband, my daughter and all the good souls around the world whose inspiration, prayers, support and love blessed my heart and sustained me in the years of living history. AUTHOR’S NOTE In 1959, I wrote my autobiography for an assignment in sixth grade. In twenty-nine pages, most half-filled with earnest scrawl, I described my parents, brothers, pets, house, hobbies, school, sports and plans for the future. Forty-two years later, I began writing another memoir, this one about the eight years I spent in the White House living history with Bill Clinton. I quickly realized that I couldn’t explain my life as First Lady without going back to the beginning―how I became the woman I was that first day I walked into the White House on January 20, 1993, to take on a new role and experiences that would test and transform me in unexpected ways. By the time I crossed the threshold of the White House, I had been shaped by my family upbringing, education, religious faith and all that I had learned before―as the daughter of a staunch conservative father and a more liberal mother, a student activist, an advocate for children, a lawyer, Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mom. For each chapter, there were more ideas I wanted to discuss than space allowed; more people to include than could be named; more places visited than could be described...
