Koan Phyllison Analysis

... One of the most famous koans next to “Does a dog have the Buddha Nature” is: “Two hands clap and there is a sound. What is the sound of one hand?” This Koan comes from the Zen master Hakuin and is commonly misquoted as: “What is the sound of one hand clapping?” When Zen master Michael Elliston gave his talk about Zen he explained this to us, and although I would not describe this as a moment of “enlightenment” I felt a moment of sudden understanding for this Koan. The simple knowledge of the word clapping not being a part of the koan was not the only reason for this feeling of understanding. At the start of the talk Abbot Elliston explained the bowing motion done by Buddhist. He explained how one hand represented the Buddha nature and the other hand represented us as we are already, and putting them together symbolizes that they are one and the same. So when Master Elliston said “What is the sound of one hand” I thought of it in the same way as a hand being used to bow. The way I understood this koan was that the sound of one hand is nothing, and more specifically using a Buddhist term, mu. Mu not necessarily meaning nothing or no, but more over nothingness or emptiness. Emptiness relates to the concept of dependent origination in that nothing exists in and of itself. Everything exists only because of a series of causes and conditions and then ceases to exist because of other cause and conditions. So in the case of this koan both hands when together make the sound that is commonly...

The Spanish Period

...Malayo-Polynesian alphabet. Whatever records our ancestors left were either burned by the Spaniards friars in the belief that they were works of the devil or were written on materials that easily perished, like the barks of trees, dried leave sand bamboo cylinders which could not have remained undestroyed even if efforts were made to preserve them. Other records that remained showed folk songs that proved the existence of a native culture truly our own. Some of these were passed on byword of mouth till they reached the hands of some publishers or printers who took interest in printing the manuscripts of the ancient Filipinos. The Spaniards who came to the Philippines tried to prove that our ancestors were really fond of poetry, songs, stories, riddles and proverbs which we still enjoy today and which serve to show to generations the true culture of our people. Pre-Spanish Period The Pre-Spanish Period Historical Background     Long before the Spaniards and other foreigners landed or set foot on Philippine shores, our forefathers already had their own literature stamped in the history of our race. Our ancient literature shows our customs and traditions in everyday life as traced in our folk stories, old plays and short stories.     Our ancestors also had their own alphabet which was different from that brought by the Spaniards. The first...

Alibata

...Many people today, both ordinary Filipinos and some historians not acquainted with the Philippines, are surprised when they learn that the ancient Filipinos actually had a writing system of their own. The complete absence of truly pre-Hispanic specimens of the baybayin script is puzzling and it has lead to a common misconception that fanatical Spanish priests must have burned or otherwise destroyed massive amounts of native documents as they did so Social expediency was another reason for Filipinos to abandon the baybayin in favour of the alphabet. They found the alphabet easy to learn and it was a skill that helped them to get ahead in life under the Spanish regime, working in relatively prestigious jobs as clerks, scribes and secretaries. With his usual touch of exaggeration, Fr. Pedro Chirino made an observation in 1604 that shows how easily Filipinos took to the new alphabet. But if reasons of practicality were behind the demise of the baybayin, why did it not survive as more than a curiosity? Why was it not retained for at least ceremonial purposes such as inscriptions on buildings and monuments, or practiced as a traditional art like calligraphy in other Asian countries? The sad fact is that most forms of indigenous art in the Philippines were abandoned wherever the Spanish influence was strong and only exist today in the regions that were out of reach of the Spanish empire. Hector Santos, a researcher living in California, suggested that obligations...

...Francis Reyes English 100 – AK Liza Erpelo May 9, 2009 “Before I learned how to speak Tagalog, people made fun of me because of my New Jersey accent. They would ostracize me because I am an American,“ (Reyes). As one can see, language is the main issue in the Filipino American society that needs to be resolved in order to reserve history and traditions. Throughout the interview with Brian, I found that he went through hardships because he could not speak Tagalog. His early lifestyle of growing up in New Jersey gave Brian a disadvantage because he did not have a real reason why a Filipino dialect would be important to learn. His situation occurred during the 80’s and, since then, the number of Filipino and Filipino Americans not knowing a Filipino dialect increased. There can be many rationalizations as to why, year-by-year, the population amongst young Filipino and Filipina Americans retain from learning a part of their heritage. For example, in the book Homebound, by Yen Le Espiritu, there is a reference as to why some immigrant parents refrain from teaching their children how to speak a Filipino dialect. Similar opinions also occur in the section “Filipino American Identity: Transcending the Crisis,” by Linda A. Revilla, and how Filipino soldiers stationed in Hawaii were called a “disgracia,” or a disgrace, because they did not know a Filipino language. Both books correlate to what my brother went through when he was living in the Philippines for two...

Mangyan Culture

...History      The pioneer settlers of the Mindoro Islands were the Aeta, referred to in the early Spanish accounts as the Chichimecos. It has been theorized that when the Malay immigrants arrived in Mindoro, they pushed the Aeta deep into the interior. The former, however, did not completely isolate the latter and instead continued bartering their commodities with forest products which were in turn traded with foreign merchants plying Philippine seas.       The Mangyan settled along the shores of Mindoro Island approximately 600-700 years ago.  It is believed that they had come from the southern regions of the archipelago. They were gradually forced to leave their coastal settlements by more aggressive groups. It appears that the Mangyan have traditionally been an unwarlike people, choosing to give up an area uncontested rather than fight for it.       The earliest accounts, which mention Mindoro and its people, are found 13th century Chinese dynastic records. A number of Chinese state documents, particularly those written in the Sung and Ming dynasties, suggest that before the coming of the Spanish conquistadors, commercial trade was flourishing between the inhabitants of Mindoro and Chinese merchants. Objects unearthed on the island, such as ceramics, porcelain, large earthenware, beads, and glass object are evidence of precolonial trade, which contributed to the shaping of an   indigenous material culture among the early inhabitants of Mindoro.       The island was a viable...

...MMAPROJ2 De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Panitik Trading Card Game EXECUTIVE BRIEF Carlos P. Depante AB-MMA 10452451 PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project is a Trading Game (TCG) based on Philippine Literature particularly during the Hispanic period which includes classics like Ibong Adarna, Florante at Laura, Noli Me Tangere, and El Filibusterismo. This project seeks to encourage the youth’s appreciation of both the literature and the language through the use of a medium that is appealing to them. It can serve as an aid in understanding these classics and renewing the interest of the Filipino youth in their own literature. RATIONALE The proponent observed that most of his classmates love to read English pocket books and novels. The proponent also read this kind of literature, in a way they are magnificent and interesting, but nothing can replace literature written in one’s native tongue and representing one’s native values. When he entered college he was little bit disappointed because only a few of his classmates appreciated Philippine literature. Most of them are into graphic novels, poetry, stories and novels in English. They view Philippine literature as old, boring, and uninteresting compared to foreign-made literature. Upon browsing on game titles, most of them were inspired by children’s stories, literature, myth, fiction and history. Most of these games are top hits in the market...
