This weeks recitation activity opened up my eyes to how difficult it can be to live with diabetes. It is a disease that requires much more than just taking a pill. It requires a complete lifestyle modification. It is important that as a pharmacist I am able to relate to patients, and I believe that this activity really provided me with the experience necessary to do so.

Being a type 2 diabetic was somewhat difficult for me. The blood glucose monitor was easy to use, but each time I had to prick myself using the lancet I felt my whole body tighten up as a response to the pain that I knew I would soon be enduring. As far as medication compliance, I was prescribed Amaryl once a day which was easy to remember to take. Carb counting proved to be a tricky area for me, not because I was unable to find the foods I was eating on the food list, but because I was unsure of serving sizes. I understand that with practice it gets easier, but I found the calculations to be confusing and cumbersome. There are so many different factors to take into consideration, including: the amount of carbs eaten, what the glucose reading is after the meal and what it should be. I take for granted being able to eat whatever I want and not have to think about anything afterwards. Injecting is an area that I feel like diabetes improve upon as time passes, as they develop their own technique. I was able to draw up the correct amounts with ease and release the “medication” with no problem from the syringe. The pen feature that allows for of the dial to be turned to the number of units needed is great, but I did have a bit more difficultly pushing down to release the “medication” using the pen
