For my fifth Application assignment I went to the Targets toy isle and I observed the toys for boys and girl between the ages of 5-7. I noticed that majority of the toys that were aimed toward boys had darker hues while female colors are consist of pink and purple. In addition, the boys’ toys packaging consist images of weapons, trucks, and Marvel Heroes, while the girls’ packaging consist of houses, animals, and baby dolls. Majority of the boys’ toys names of the involve action phrases for instance Little Tikes Tough Workshop, and Jurrasitic World Chopping Rex while the girl toys names normally are softer and passive such as Friends Party Cakes and Lego Friends Heartlake Cupcake Café. With regard of TC’s physical development, in terms of gross motor skills, while lying on the mat in supine position, TC has complete control of her head, keeping it in central position and moving it side to side when something calls her attention. She also kicked strongly using alternate feet while on the mat or while changing her nappy, skill that babies of her age range do (Flood, 2003), therefore TC is on target for these skills. In the prone position, TC attempted to roll but was not successful; TC looked uncomfortable and cried. Moreover, when sitting, it was observed that TC not only didn’t have her head straight but also her back was curved, therefore TC could not keep balance or reach for toys nearby. Gendered Monkeys

...[Hook/anecdote on observations of nephews etc] A few years ago, a video of a five-year-old girl named Riley went viral. Standing in a decidedly pink toy aisle she laments, “Why do all the girls have to buy pink stuff?” Riley is not the only one questioning the ways in which toys are gender-stereotyped and marketed, and some go so far to argue that, in addition to shaping gender identity, it in contributes to gender inequality. [additional discussion/framing main questions of the paper etc] Gender, not to be confused with sex, which is biologically defined by reproductive organs, may be understood as a socially constructed range of characteristics that pertain to and differentiate between masculinity and femininity. To further clarify, “male” and “female” are sex categories,...

Shopping Patterns of People in Home Decor and Gift Shops

...FINAL REPORT OF “SHOPPING PATTERNS OF THE PEOPLE INSIDE THE GIFTS SHOPS AND HOME DÉCOR SHOPS – A COMPARITIVE ANALYSIS (September 4, 2010) In partial fulfillment of the requirements of the course "Retail Marketing" of MBA (Full Time) CARD AND GIFT: For the past decade or so the gift and card industry has been growing at a rapid rate and gaining market share. At the whim of discretionary spending, gift shops and card stores rely on low-margin, high-volume sales and are finding it increasingly difficult to compete with supermarkets and online retailers. The key to survival is consolidation and vertical integration which is seeing the number of companies decline while store numbers edge up. The cards and gift shops fall into the impulse purchase category. The product mix includes: cards, collectible gifts, gift wrap, holiday and seasonal decoration, novelties, party supplies, souveniers, etc. Gift shops come as both standalone stores as well as part of supermarkets. In India these stores are franchisees, chain retailers, as well as independent retailers. The customer base is spread over a wide demography, but the main consumers are young. Some of the main players in this category are: Archies: [pic] Archies was founded in 1979 as a mail order poster shop, and introduced its first line of greeting cards in 1980. The company procured its first ever foreign license from Walt Disney, USA in 1984 and offered its customers some of the best loved Disney characters...

Mirror Neurons

...most critical finding of 21st century neuroscience to date—the discovery of mirror neurons (MNs)—contend that MNs underlie simulation theories of action understanding and mindreading (Gallese & Goldman, 1998); Gallese et al., (2004). The mechanism that allows mirroring of action is referred to as the ‘direct-matching hypothesis,’ (Rizzolatti et al., 2001), and the claim is based on the response properties of MNs in monkeys. The discovery of MNs is important in that if the implications of their function are properly understood, it lays a foundation for explanations of not only understanding of action and other minds (Gallese, 2003), but for other big questions, such as the evolution of language (Rizzolatti & Arbib, 1998). The concern of this paper is MN function as a feature at the core of the stronger claims. Alternative theorists challenge the characterization of the MN role as ‘mirroring’ action, as their findings show that mirroring cannot be direct and must rely on an interpretation of the observed action. They claim: a) MNs do not simulate with enough precision to be referred to as ‘mirroring,’ in which they are said to simulate an agent’s motor program onto the very same motor repertoire of an observer not performing the act; b) mirror neuron activation is predictive of action, not replicative; and c) the function of these neurons supports a model that is generative of top-down action understanding that is emulative, and formed outside the motor system, not embodied in the simulation...

It is not intended to be a coherent historical survey of this field, nor can it claim to be a balanced selection from theorists of current influence and future pathways. For this reason it seems useful here to clarify the lines of thought developed in the contents of this proposal, so that the reader can appreciate the context in which we must put our strategies and sincere efforts. An actual situation will be explored and real life experiences will be taken in, as well as problems, which might be thought more intrinsic to formulation of aims, content, methods (and so on) of a particular primary school education system.
