Katlin, I too also thought that each stage was assigned to a specific grade level. I learned that these stages overlapped, after seeing information from a previous week’s WebQuest in the present week’s WebQuest. This is good because it has helped me to become more familiar with the concepts that we have been studying the last few weeks and has allotted me more time to work with and practice these concepts.
I believe that part of the reason why 4th graders in the U.S. read below the minimally acceptable levels of fluency is because of what we talked about in a previous WebQuest. In WebQuest #3, Task #2 (When we say students can’t read, what does that mean?), the text states:
“95% of the textbooks that districts buy and publishers get lots of money for are written at least 2 grade levels above the grade level it is written for. So, unless the teacher modifies the reading and provides other resources, the student is always asked to read something at her/his frustrational level.”

This is one reason why students are having trouble with Fluency. Another reason may be due to the teacher’s teaching style. I am a second year, returning substitute teacher. This year, the most popular teaching style that I have seen is that of a Traditionalist teacher. In WebQuest #2, Task #2 (The …show more content…
Children do not want to learn if the activity is not going to be entertaining, especially since there are tons of video games and technology devices out there in the world today. I think the main issues that teachers face are found in lesson plan development, because it is difficult to connect with students today, if the lesson plan does not involve working with technology or competing through games. We talked about this in a previous WebQuest as well. All teachers having to teach the same skills at the same time, on the same day. Uniformity has taken over creativity!
