1. Bill Bailey could use Maslow’s theory of motivation in order to show support of the merger by appealing to people’s most pressing needs within the Utah Opera Organization. (Krietner, 2010) People ultimately react in a way that serves their own needs and aspirations. Bill Bailey would need to tap into those needs in order to make sure the merger goes as smoothly as possible. The first need that would have to be satisfied would be the physiological which would include hunger and sleep. In this setting Bill Bailey would need to make sure that these people had sufficient wages to live on and would continue to be working in acceptable conditions. Once this need has been met an individual would then be concerned with their safety and security. The staff of the Utah Opera Organization would need to know that their jobs were safe and would not be lost in the merger. If there is a constant threat of job loss the staff is under a lot of stress to try and maintain their position in the company. The next concern would be an individual’s sense of belonging. They would want to know that they will still belong to the group and were accepted in the group. If the merger were to take place I believe it would be important to let the staff know about the merger and all what would be taking place as the merger progressed. After the staff has a feeling of belonging they will be motivated by a desire for esteem. They would need to feel and be recognized that they have some value. When this need has been met it will allow for increased productivity because each individual will feel they are getting the recognition they deserve. Finally, when all of these needs have been met, people will be motivated by a desire to self-actualize, which will allow an individual to reach their maximum potential with the Utah Opera Organization. This may be hard to define for each person, as each individual has a different idea of goals and ideas. Each individual may experience these needs at different times and not necessarily in this order. The biggest thing Bill will have to figure out is what is the biggest motivator and capitalize on that in order to make the merger as painless as possible. (Krietner, 2010)
2. One of the methods Scott Parker, chairman of the board for the Utah Symphony Organization, can use to convince Mrs. Abravanel to support the merger is by using McClelland’s Need Theory, the need for affiliation. (Krietner, 2010) Mrs. Abravanel fiercely defend the reputations of their musicians, and individuals have a strong need to continue those social relationships and belonging to the group. Mrs. Abravanel would be able to build further associations with individuals supporting other art forms through greater interaction available with an expanding group. This would mean that Mrs. Abravanel’s social circle would expand to the symphony, and her relationship needs would be met. There will be a larger group of individual and opposition may be met fulfilling the need for achievement. The need for power will be fulfilled as the symphony members and the opera members appreciate the joint effort to keep both groups financially stable. Mrs. Abravanel will be able to influence others in this decision and encourage everyone to make the best choice for both groups. With all three of these needs being met, it will increase the likelihood that Scott Parker will be able to convince Mrs. Abravanel to support the merger.
3. Anne’s positional power is her title as CEO of the merger between the symphony and the orchestra. Anne’s’ personal power is in her prior successes at the Boston Lyric Opera, where she retired debt and increased productions. (Collier, 2008) Anne can use her position to assist with the merger efforts, and build further support. If Anne is able to keep both the symphony and the opera updated on the status of the merger, they should in turn respect and honor her leadership capabilities. A communication plan with the Director of Marketing would aid in the merger, as well. There could be some great advantages to creating a forum that members from each organization can ask questions. Anne can use her position to empower leaders within the organization to participate in the merger. If Anne is able to show other members that she trusts her new leadership team this will help with the organizational structure as a whole. Anne can use her personal power by focusing on fundraising. This will demonstrate to Mr. Lockhart she is able to support the arts community and hopefully garner his support. Anne’s fundraising skills are going to be key to making this endeavor successful. Anne can tell Mr. Lockhart that the symphony will be increasing expenses and the additional fundraising is needed to gain financial stability of the symphony. Explaining to Mr. Lockhart her greatest past challenges, defeats, why she is there and the most satisfying outcomes may help to build a better relationship. Anne will be able to show Mr. Lockhart the growth she has seen over her 11 years with the Utah Opera and this should help create a positive relationship for the future merger. (Collier, 2008) a. Anne could use her positional power to successfully lead the merger efforts by demonstrating her confidence in her title as CEO and her decision making processes. Her confidence will lend confidence to others. As CEO it is important that she believe in the decisions she is making and that they are the best decision for the symphony and the orchestra. b. Anne could use her personal power to empower Keith Lockhart by sharing her successes at Boston Lyric Opera and lending credibility that her decision making has brought about great successes for others. Anne could also use her personal power to remain calm and collected throughout the discussions of the merger with Keith Lockhart in order to gain his confidence in the merger as well. This will empower Keith Lockhart to know that this is the right decision and to have a united front with Anne when talking with others.
4. A potential issue with the musicians if not resold that would jeopardize the continuing organizational performance would be the salaries and benefits of the musicians. The musicians are concerned that this is just a ploy to reopen these negotiations and will hurt their future and present salaries. If these concerns are not met and resolved before or during the merger the symphony runs the risk of losing the 83 symphonic players or they could possibly go on strike. If this happens this would really create a negative balance in funds if there is no one to play the symphony. It is of the utmost importance that this issue is resolved. a. Anne could deal with this issue by assuring the musicians that all contract negotiated before the merger will be upheld after the merger. This may require Anne to sign new contracts under the merged properties with the same clauses of the previous contract.
5. The influence tactic Anne could use to persuade the opera’s full time staff and artist to endorse the merger would be rational persuasion. (Krietner, 2010) Anne could show that the arts are having a hard time succeeding in the current economic climate and that this is a rational decision to merge both in order to make sure both organizations survive. Anne could also show how she was able to successfully run Boston Lyric Opera and make it profitable. This would give credibility to the other evidence she will be presenting to the staff and artists showing that this decision is in their best interests as well. This will create a favorable follower attitude and allow the merger to move forward with the artist and staff on board with the decision. The staff and artist will feel that Anne values their opinions or she would not have consulted them on this issue.
