"Task analysis for instructional design is a process of analyzing and articulating the kind of learning that you expect the learners to know how to perform". (George Mason University) Although task analysis has been approached from several perspectives, there is one constant among them. Task analysis, at a minimum, assists the instructor or designer to understand the content to be taught.
According to George Mason University, (n.d.) instructional designers perform task analysis in order to: * determine the instructional goals and objectives; * define and describe in detail the tasks and sub-tasks that the student will perform; * specify the knowledge type (declarative, structural, and procedural knowledge) that characterize a job or task; * select learning outcomes that are appropriate for instructional development; * prioritize and sequence tasks; * determine instructional activities and strategies that foster learning; * select appropriate media and learning environments; * construct performance assessments and evaluation.
Below is a goal analysis I developed to assist learners in understanding the business planning process for a beauty business.
Goal:
At the end of six weeks, learners will know the main components of a business plan and through the use of business planning software, will develop a business plan that will be used to measure comprehension and be used to obtain financing for starting a new beauty industry business.
Objectives:
* Understanding the purpose of business planning-Through discussion, lectures and research, learners will understand the main components of a business plan, the purpose of a business plan and why a regularly updated and professional looking plan can help ensure success throughout the life of their business. * Develop the company description section-Learners will be asked to consider the specifics of what their business plans to do, the structure of the business, location, how they will differentiate their business from others and which markets they will serve, etc. Learners will demonstrate mastery by creating the company description section and receive feedback. * Develop the market analysis section-Learners will be instructed on how to research and document the specific industry, market and competitive analysis information. Learners will demonstrate mastery by creating the market analysis section and receive feedback. * Develop the marketing & sales management section-Learners will be instructed on the techniques of marketing their business and document how they will do so. They will be advised on sales strategies and how this can be best achieved in a typical beauty business. They will demonstrate mastery by completing these sections and receive feedback. * Develop the organization & management plan-Learners will be instructed on how best to describe their organization and its management structure. Learners will demonstrate mastery by creating an organizational plan and receive feedback. * Develop the service or product description section-Learners will be instructed and asked to demonstrate a narrative explaining their service, how it benefits their customers, the lifecycle of the business and any Research and Development (R&D) activities, if they will be developing any products. Learners will demonstrate mastery by creating this section and receive feedback. * Develop the funding request section-In this section, learners will be introduced to some of the available funding sources and what should be included. Learners will demonstrate mastery by creating a funding request and receive feedback. * Develop the financial projections-If funding is being sought, learners will be informed of the critical nature of including financial projections to aid in success and how to create realistic projections. Learners will demonstrate mastery by creating the typical financial projections and receive feedback. * Include any appendix-Although this is an optional component of the business plan, it can be a useful place to include resumes, permits, leases, etc. Learners will demonstrate mastery by including any documents that will be included in their business plan and receive feedback on its contents. * Develop the executive summary section-Learners will be informed about why this component of the business plan is developed last even though it is the first part of the business plan. Learners will demonstrate mastery by creating a one page executive summary and receive feedback on its contents.
Upon completion of this module, learners will submit a complete business plan, which will be forwarded to the Corporation for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) for feedback. In analyzing the each student’s business plan a CED representative will be asked to apply a rating of 1-10 on the basis of grammar, content, credibility and probability of funding approval. Students receiving mastery of 80% or higher, will be considered to have successfully mastered the business planning module.

The jet was owned by Canadian airline Nolisair, and was being operated by a Nigerian company to transport Nigerian pilgrims in and out of Mecca. The DC- 8 caught fire during take-off from Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Pilots noticed problems during early stages of take-off and only made it 671 meters in elevation before attempting to turn around for a emergency landing. It was too late; the under inflated tires had overheated began to catch fire. The fire grew and blew out the hydraulics which made the emergency landing impossible. This was the worst wreck a DC-8 had ever experienced and has held the record for many years following. The NTSB concluded that the fire could have been handled by leaving the landing gear extended and away from the plane. Although the pilots failed to make the right decision, and added just one more human error to the equation, it was the obvious neglect by the maintenance team that caused this horrific accident. There are many human factors which played a vital role in the crash. The maintenance team failed to inflate the #2 and #4 main gear tires after recognizing the pressure during the pre-flight.
