The Organizational Structure deals with centralization of authority, division of labor, and formalization. The United States Navy illustrates all these facets.
The United States Navy’s Organizational structure can be considered a cross between a professional Bureaucracy or Divisionalized form. A professional bureaucracy is a complex and stable environment, which relies primarily on set of standard skills (Griffin & Moorehead, 2009). There are professional areas of expertise were formalization is minimum. Positions throughout the organization are trained in a particular skill set. Every task is performed with specific rules and procedures according to their profession (Griffin & Moorehead, 2009). The characteristics of a divisionalized form operate in a relative very large and simple environment with several different divisions (Griffin & Moorehead, 2009). Decisions are made between both the department head and the division with the output being standard.
Let’s narrow this to an example of a naval vessel structure. On a ship it is broken down into several different departments which are divided into divisions within the departments, depending on the task of the department. First, we would have to start with the organizational charts which consist of: The Commanding Officer, Executive Officer, Department Head, Division Officer, Leading Chief Petty Officer, Leading Petty Officer and Work Center Supervisor.
The Commanding Officer, who is often referred to as the CO, is overall responsible for the entire ship. The CO establishes the policies and guide lines for the ship and has final approval on all documents and programs implemented at the command. The responsibility is absolute…...

...Organizational Structure MGT/230 Organizational Structure When dealing with the structure of an organization there are two main structures each company follows. One is the Horizontal Structure and one is the Vertical Structure. With a company such as Starbucks the company falls under what is known as the Horizontal Structure, meaning they use a “functional” form of organization versus a hierarchy. According to Bateman and Snell (2011), this means the jobs and departments are specialized and grouped according to business functions and the skills they require. This kind of function influences the type of organizational structure much like blue prints determine the type of building will be made, whether it is a one story home or a ten story office building. The final step in the structure of the business is the actual design, known as the organizational design. All these factors combined determine what type of business structure each company will fall into. There are various organizational structures in management; however the most predominant structure in the United States Navy would be the chain of command structure. The way that the hierarchical levels are in this company is; the owner/CEO occupies the highest position.
