My Teaching Philosophy

Having spent many years as an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learner, a lot of what I do in the classroom as an ESL/EFL teacher has some sort of connection to my own experience as a language learner. One of the most valuable lessons I was able to take away from this experience is the importance of making language teaching/learning as authentic as possible. In my opinion, the target language should be used as a means of communication in the classroom and not just as a subject of academic interest. This way, language instruction is meaningful and effective. After all, most people who decide to learn a language do so in order to be able to communicate in the target language. Regarding meaningful interactions, I am a firm believer that for language learning to take place, learners need to be exposed to the target language in a meaningful way. I think that a way to make language instruction meaningful is by taking into consideration students' individual differences. By having a clear idea of who my students are, I am capable of making informed pedagogical decisions, such as establishing appropriate learning goals and objectives, and selecting suitable content, teaching approaches and materials. Further, when it comes to making language instruction more authentic, I believe that integrating skills is crucial. Given that most real-world communicative situations require people to combine the use of skills, it seems logical to me to want to replicate this in language instruction. By being exposed to an integrated approach to language instruction, learners are exposed to the richness and complexity of language, and are given a change to interact in an authentic and meaningful way.
