Rick Cohen, CEO of C&S Wholesale Grocers, has to make a decision in a few days about whether to keep the current organizational structure, which is already stretched to the limit, or to explore an alternate structure, self-managed teams, that could improve workflow and morale. These tasks were the result of a high amount of turnover trend of attrition and employees being unhappy within this particular company. The initial action taken involved data collection that were presented and passed out to employees in the form of an internal employee survey. The data collection analysis revealed our hypothesis and we set out to prove that the increase in employee turnover was due to low employee morale and poor employee performance not being happy with their role and the environment being a part of this company. The initial survey leads us to understand we have to get a stronger response rate than just 17.3%—to help achieve the goal of obtaining the feedback of the vast majority of BIMS employees. Cohen & Siegel had worked together for several years for other grocery wholesalers. They named their fledgling enterprise “C&S,” and worked hard to build a base of loyal, satisfied customers. The company started in a 5,000 square foot, three story warehouse with three warehouse workers. C&S purchased and received goods from a myriad of manufactures, stored the goods in their warehouse and then sold and distributed the goods to area retailers in an ongoing process. They handled over 1,200 grocery products. The warehouse covered approximately 400,000 square feet of land and could be as tall as 40 feet in height. Inside the warehouse there are rows of steel shelving. Products were stored on shelves and organized by items. In 1929, Worcester’s Blackstone River flooded the C&S warehouse, destroying its entire inventory. Despite the devastation of the flood C&S packed up and moved to a new location on higher grounds. The new facility was twice the size of Worcester. Rick Cohen became president and CEO of C&S Wholesale Grocers in 1987 after his father Lester Cohen retired. Engineers write Java code that gets executed across the whole cluster efficiently on terabytes of data. Wonderful! Unfortunately, not everyone who needs access to data is an engineer. Also, even engineers don’t feel like writing a new MapReduce job every time they want to take a different look at a data set. We realized we needed a more productive data analysis tool. The first thought was to get SQL to run on our petabytes of data, but that seemed like a large undertaking, as SQL data access semantics are fairly sophisticated, which implies a fairly large friction area with Quantcast’s MapReduce implementation. Another solution, simpler, was to get Google’s recently open-sourced Sawzall to run on Quantcast’s MapReduce cluster. Although as a language Sawzall is not as easy to use as SQL, especially to non-engineers, it’s still much simpler than Java. And it seemed reasonably easy to integrate Sawzall with Quantcast’s MapReduce implementation, as its interface to MapReduce is much narrower and better defined than SQL’s. The 1970's seen a quick advancement in computers and their languages due the the creation of the microprocessors. This era's programming history is marked by C, Pascal, Smalltalk, Scheme and Prolog The C programming language is the basis for many others. It's one of the singly most important building blocks of many of the languages used today. C was created in 1971, though it's roots go back to 1954's Fortran. However, it's direct predeccessor was B in 1969. C was created as a compiler to more easily install OS's on computers. It made it possible to the few system-dependent requirements and then use a C compiler to install the new OS. Bell Lab's Ken Thompson was behind the original B, then him and Dennis Ritchie, also of Bell Labs, improved upon it for the NB language. The evolution of NB led naturally to C.
