Abstract

This report is a reflection on the task of the team that made based on business enterprises Primark & AngloAmerican. In it, describe the functions and decisions to develop into the conversation. In addition, this report will provide information about how group work, which describes our example, the information handled within the.

In the first part (introduction), I will study the development of "group work" in general. I will give definitions each of the functions and key definitions have been used on the essential things we need to know to work in groups. This study is something objective, based on information I will share.

In the second part (strategic analysis), I will explain our experience in the group in general and my own, with a case study on business we already mentioned above, Primark & AngloAmerican. I will give all the information and opinions about them. This study is somewhat subjective, because the opinion of every one of us on them.

In the third part, I will give recommendations and, if necessary, possible solutions to try to improve our skills within the group.

And finally, I will present a conclusion, where I will give my final opinion on the group work in general.

Introduction

Before starting this report, it would be good to first know a good definition of group work because the overall of this work is based on it:

Monash University (2009)

“The aim of group work is to produce better (more effective, more detailed, more comprehensive) presentations and reports. This is achieved through the combined talents of group members, contributing knowledge and ideas.”

“One difficulty with group work is that you can't work as quickly as you can by yourself. Patience, communication skills and commitment are all required to make the most of the contributions of all group members. Thus, effective group work requires each member to focus on the process rather than just the product.”

Once read and know that it is teamwork, we could say that working in groups may be the best option to solve certain problems that arise or simply, make decisions, combining the talents of the people who compose the group, though, On the other hand, could lead to something bad and does not work, due to different circumstances such as the friendship between the bad members of the group, the lack of communication or coordination, excessive work by some components and no work on the part of others, etc.

Apart from all these problems, I think the best option to start a group work is defined to have a good script, and know which is our ultimate goal, if we can be guided by some definite steps, and to help us toward our ultimate goal. The steps you took my group are based on having a dynamic group construction, an agreement on the objectives and organize the group in general. We could say that all these actions are performed collectively and are very important, but it also takes a role the individual work of each member.

The functions of the working groups are very important because each having a different personality to the rest, has a different profile within the group, and thus may contribute to their personal abilities to develop the potential of the whole group.

We must also know the definition for "role": "The conception of group roles is considered within the debate on diversity in groups. After the discussion of group roles in small group research, the team role approach by Belbin is introduced. Based on training experience with management teams he distinguishes nine team roles contributing to effective teamwork: plant, resource investigator, co-ordinator, shaper, monitor evaluator, teamworker, implementer, specialist, and completer. An optimal group composition is given when all roles are represented within a team."

In my group there were nine people in each developed different roles: Álvaro, Teresa, Victor, Carlos, Quiu, Chen, Francisco, Ana and me. In the strategic analysis will define each role, as we will consider our real situation.

To conclude this introduction, I would add two more points that I consider very important and almost essential in teamwork: the maintenance of interpersonal relationships and leadership within group.

Interpersonal relationships: "Relationships are the key to the success of the project, so be prepared to invest considerable energy in developing all your relationships in the group. Remember, too, that people have very different modes of interacting in groups, depending on their social and cultural backgrounds."

On the other hand, effective leaders are able to manage the process within the group, which helps decide how to work efficiently, and in turn, monitor the group's progress in relation to the plan. Should not be limited solely and exclusively to drive the group toward their own goal. Therefore, a good leader is an excellent listener, and is also willing to re-evaluate his own opinion on a particular topic.

Strategic Analysis

In strategic analysis, I would consider my work as a team on the companies mentioned in the introduction. The purpose of the meeting was trying to make a decision on future investment in one of these two companies. To resolve this problem, each group member had a different role to give their views and try to take a joint decision. These are the roles of different members of the working group:

Shaper(SH)
“Shapers are people who challenge the team to improve. They are dynamic and usually extroverted people who enjoy stimulating others.”

Implementer(IMP)
“Implementers are the people who get things done. They turn the team's ideas and concepts into practical actions and plans.”

Completer-Finisher(CF)
“Completer-Finishers are the people who see that projects are completed thoroughly. They ensure there have been no errors or omissions and they pay attention to the smallest of details.”
People Oriented Roles:

Coordinator(CO)
“Coordinators are the ones who take on the traditional team-leader role and have also been referred to as the chairmen. They guide the team to what they perceive are the objectives.”

Team Worker (TW)
“Team Workers are the people who provide support and make sure that people within the team are working together effectively.”

Resource Investigator (RI)
“Resource Investigators are innovative and curious. They explore available options, develop contacts, and negotiate for resources.”

Thought Oriented Roles:

Plant (PL)
“The Plant is the creative innovator who comes up with new ideas and approaches. They thrive on praise.”
Monitor-Evaluator (ME)
“Monitor-Evaluators are best at analyzing and evaluating ideas that other people (often Plants) come up with. These people are shrewd and objective.”
Specialist (SP)
“Specialists are people who have specialized knowledge that is needed to get the job done. They pride themselves on their skills and abilities.”

Within the group, I have done the Shaper role because I am a very dynamic and extroverted, I can talk to people easily and I can help find possible solutions to the problems we raised, always looking for a reason clear and concise.

As we can see, all the functions are different between them. For this reason, this is one of the best techniques in business, because when you make decisions, you need at least several points of view to the problem. Example would be our case, in which everyone had to defend their ideas about investing in one or another company, depending on the ethics of each.

Conclusion

In conclusion we can say that this work has been a great experience because we had to establish relationships with people of another culture, in this case China, who have another point of view very differently about our culture, Spanish. The group consisted of 9 persons, of which one was the organizer and the remaining 8 were divided in turn into 4 for each of the two companies associated with each group. I think it has improved the language about the form of oral expression and in public. Besides having the opportunity to hear different points of view that one person they could not be raised.

It is a great opportunity to learn how you can be your future in an enterprise as decision makers, such as meetings that can be carried out or to divide the work.

Solutions and Recommendations

In my opinion, the recommendations would be that each can fulfill its role must know first. Another question would always talk about showing our opinion, never be silent for fear they will say or simply not try to express what you feel or think about something.
