Since the beginning of time, technology has been used to change the way society operates. People viewed technology as something to make everyday life easier, when in reality, individuals are adapting to the environment, including adaptations to the technology in use. Today, there is so much new technology introduced to the world at a rate that seems like every minute. Society has to continually adapt to this new technology, teaching the younger generations how to use it so they can pass those skills on to others. Technology has become so prevalent in society today that it has seemingly taking over people's lives. Due to society’s dependence on it, technology is causing people to lose critical social and workplace skills.

This quote is trying to say that by the way of the dictaphone, children would rather record what they are saying than say it over the phone or in person, which is absurd. Many kids don’t even want to talk on the phone with their grandparents, but many parents think that such interaction should be pushed, because it is an easy way to learn necessary phone skills. While learning these skills are vital, it can be challenging for children to hone these abilities. Heidi Stevens of the Chicago Tribune states in her article “If possible, use Skype, FaceTime or Google Plus to connect with relatives because they engage more of the children's senses” (1). If kids learn to talk on a site such as Skype, then the children will know how to better engage their senses in the future, and are more likely to retain their skill of speaking on the phone, than if they used the phone alone. Another thing vital to learning phone skills that kids don’t realize is that they can’t just call for no reason, then they will have nothing to talk about and won’t benefit from the call. “Prep your children with some specific things to tell the relatives” (Stevens 1) is another idea that Stevens puts in her article to get kids to talk more …show more content…
One last thing to help with phone conversations is when Stevens put in her article “‘...You have to create a relationship over the phone,’” (1). Kids aren’t going to want to talk on the phone with someone they have no relationship to. Since phones are limiting the social skills kids are forming, then it will be hard to create and nurture relationships, even with relatives. Even though these are good tips to learning phone skills, kids today are still lacking, because many of these faculties are not put into practice. Children today learn how to type on an iPad before they learn to talk. This leads to more texting, and less conversations, and in turn leaving people with no phone skills in their future lives. One last skill that is lost because of technology is the ability of a person to read another person’s emotions. The digital realm has kids talking through text so much more than over the phone or face to face, and with the conversations being over text, emotions are lost.
