Ted Ferris: Rhetorical Analysis

Ted Ferris, a podcaster, and author, delivers a persuasive speech on a very interesting concept on why should you define your fears, instead of goals. The specific purpose of his speech, is to inform the audience how important it is to be in control of your fears, learn to manage your fears and face them head on by setting by a plan of action.
His target audience was college students and business owners. In his speech, he mentions how in his college days he was suicidal because he couldn't handle his fears of failure and rejection. He was very clear about his thoughts on suicide, and a speech coming from a former college student who contemplated suicide is a very powerful message for his target audience. He goes on to say that in his business, he took time away from his business to take a much needed vacation in order to unwind, recharge, and learn to distress from daily obstacles. Similarly, the message to business owners is the same concept, those who don't take risks for fear of loss or failure of making the wrong decisions that can impact their goal setting ways, will always face the fears without taking action. …show more content…
His attention grabber to me was his life changing narrative about attempted suicide. From the beginning, he established credibility, he seemed sincere and serious about having bipolar and dealing with depression in his younger years. His introduction of the topic was relevant to his target audience; they can learn from his speech on fear and rejection, and the way to simplify a plan in motion which he named, “fear setting.” which was a preview of his speech. Although, his focused was on defining your fears, he did a good job tying it into the main points of his story. Two transitions he used in his speech, was closing with the profile of his mentor, and the other was reiterated the purpose of his speech and ending it with a quote.
