You might hear lots of older people saying,” That internet isn't any good for you!”. Well, According to Nicholas Carr in “ The Shallows” they are correct. The Internet is the most powerful technological tool ever created. It is changing the way we perceive things, ability to understand, and disables our ability to think and reason. Our ability to think and reason is becoming extinct , we go to the internet for our answers and can not figure it out ourselves. We come across a problem and our first instinct is to look to the internet for our answers, we have lost the ability to reason. We don't try to think for ourselves, we try to think of what we can google to find the answer. Plato talked about how written work helped us learn and understand better. We have drifted away …show more content…
Staring at the computer screen all day will damage your eyes and affect your ability to see. Certain studies are proving that a overuse of the internet can affect hearing also. With these things changed it is affect the way we see things in the world. It isn't like it used to be. Also we are not going outside as much and it is affecting our physical strength. It is making us weaker, damaging our senses, and affecting the way we perceive the entire world. The internet has became such a common thing to use, it is changing the way we understand things. When we think of an article or a news story we automatically go to the internet to read it. The internet has turned into the first thing we think about when learning things. As I have stated in my earlier paragraphs, using the internet that much can hurt you. It is becoming an overused source of technology. Losing sight, hearing, and physical health are all consequences of the internet. Changing the way we understand things, think, and reason is not good for the human race. These are all effects of the internet. The most powerful technological tool ever created, The

...accessing and using the internet and social media making us a more intellectual society? The answer is found in many skewed viewpoints and opinions. In Nicholas Carr's article in the Wall Street Journal, "does the internet make you dumber", he makes numerous rhetorical appeals to Ethos to establish credibility or the "trust me" appeal. The Ethos appeal of this article produces an appeal towards the author by providing information the author is credible and knowledgeable. Mr. Carr identifies scientific studies suggesting this in not only his opinion, but statistically proven by evidence collected. Mr. Carr also relates to the Nobel Prize winning neuroscientist, Eric Kandel as well as Roman Philosopher Seneca. He also refers to the Cornell study and Stanford study which applies to Ethos as well as Logos. Additionally, Nicholas Carr uses rhetorical appeals to Logos or reason by referring in his article the internet to being "shallow". Mr. Carr uses this sense of reason to influence the reader by referencing several different studies completed by Cornell University as well as Stanford University supporting his article. In his article, “Does the internet make you dumber” by using emotion to make the reader believe if he or she does not agree with these statements they may be shallow or less intelligent. Mr. Carr uses statements to induce guilt into the...

Nicholas Carr The Shallows Analysis

...According to Nicholas Carr, “The price we pay to assume technology’s power is alienation. The toll can be particularly high with our intellectual technologies. The tools of the mind amplify and in turn numb the most intimate, the most human, of natural capacities- those for reason perception, memory, emotion”(211). What Carr is saying is that the internet causes the brain to be affected more than any other form of technology. With the invention of the printing press, books has had a major impact on the mind, but between that time and the invention of the internet, no other device has had the effect that the internet has. As society becomes more dependent upon the internet, researchers have discovered that the brain has changed the way a person reads, focuses, and performs certain activities, also the internet being the easiest place to gain any information it makes it number source...

Avoid News

...Avoid News Towards a Healthy News Diet By Rolf Dobelli Prologue This article is the antidote to news. It is long, and you probably won’t be able to skim it. Thanks to heavy news consumption, many people have lost the reading habit and struggle to absorb more than four pages straight. This article will show you how to get out of this trap – if you are not already too deeply in it. of what we are designed to handle. This leads to great risk and to inappropriate, outright dangerous behavior. In the past few decades, the fortunate among us have recognized the hazards of living with an overabundance of food (obesity, diabetes) and have started to shift our diets. But most of us do not yet understand that news is to the mind what sugar is to the body. News is easy to digest. The media feeds us small bites of trivial matter, tidbits that don’t really concern our lives and don’t require thinking. That’s why we experience almost no saturation. Unlike reading books and long, deep magazine articles (which requires thinking), we can swallow limitless quantities of news flashes, like bright-colored candies for the mind. Today, we have reached the same point in relation to information overload that we faced 20 years ago in regard to food intake. We are beginning to recognize how toxic news can be and we are learning to take the first steps toward an information diet. This is my attempt to clarify the toxic dangers of news – and to recommend some ways to deal with it. I have now gone without...

...THE B L A C K SWAN The HIGHLY I mpact IM of the PROBABLE Nassim Nicholas Taleb U.S.A. $26.95 Canada $34.95 is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: It is unpre dictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9 / 1 1 . For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives. A BLACK SWAN Why do we not acknowledge the phenomenon of black swans until after they occur? Part of the answer, according to Taleb, is that humans are hardwired to learn specifics when they should be focused on generalities. We concentrate on things we already know and time and time again fail to take into consideration what we don't know. We are, therefore, unable to truly estimate oppor tunities, too vulnerable to the impulse to simplify, narrate, and categorize, and not open enough to rewarding those who can imagine the "impossible." For years, Taleb has studied how we fool our selves into thinking we know more than we actually do. We restrict our thinking to the irrelevant and inconsequential, while large events continue to surprise us and shape our world. Now, in this reve latory book, Taleb explains everything we know about what we don't know. He offers...

Blink - the Power of Thinking Without Thinking

...ALSO BY MALCOLM GLADWELL The Tipping Point To my parents, Joyce and Graham Gladwell Introduction The Statue That Didn’t Look Right In September of 1983, an art dealer by the name of Gianfranco Becchina approached the J. Paul Getty Museum in California. He had in his possession, he said, a marble statue dating from the sixth century BC. It was what is known as a kouros—a sculpture of a nude male youth standing with his left leg forward and his arms at his sides. There are only about two hundred kouroi in existence, and most have been recovered badly damaged or in fragments from grave sites or archeological digs. But this one was almost perfectly preserved. It stood close to seven feet tall. It had a kind of light-colored glow that set it apart from other ancient works. It was an extraordinary find. Becchina’s asking price was just under $10 million. The Getty moved cautiously. It took the kouros on loan and began a thorough investigation. Was the statue consistent with other known kouroi? The answer appeared to be yes. The style of the sculpture seemed reminiscent of the Anavyssos kouros in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, meaning that it seemed to fit with a particular time and place. Where and when had the statue been found? No one knew precisely, but Becchina gave the Getty’s legal department a sheaf of documents relating to its more recent history. The kouros, the records stated, had been in the private collection of a Swiss physician named Lauffenberger...

Global Political Economy

...GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND DIPLOMACY STUDENT GUIDELINE NOTES GLOBAL POLITICAL ECONOMY MODULE Paste the notes here… Political economy originally was the term for studying production, buying and selling, and their relations with law, custom, and government. Political economy originated in moral philosophy (e.g. Adam Smith was Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow), it developed in the 18th century as the study of the economies of states — polities, hence political economy. In late nineteenth century, the term "political economy" was generally replaced by the term economics, used by those seeking to place the study of economy upon mathematical and axiomatic bases, rather than the structural relationships of production and consumption (cf. marginalism, Alfred Marshall). History of the term Originally, political economy meant the study of the conditions under which production was organized in the nation-states. The phrase économie politique (translated in English as political economy) first appeared in France in 1615 with the well known book by Antoyne de Montchrétien: Traicté de l’oeconomie politique. French physiocrats, Adam Smith, David Ricardo and Karl Marx were some of the exponents of political economy. In 1805, Thomas Malthus became England's first professor of political economy, at the East India Company College, Haileybury, Hertfordshire. The world's first professorship in political economy was established...

Study Habits

.... Organization Theory Challenges and Perspectives John McAuley, Joanne Duberley and Phil Johnson . This book is, to my knowledge, the most comprehensive and reliable guide to organisational theory currently available. What is needed is a text that will give a good idea of the breadth and complexity of this important subject, and this is precisely what McAuley, Duberley and Johnson have provided. They have done some sterling service in bringing together the very diverse strands of work that today qualify as constituting the subject of organisational theory. Whilst their writing is accessible and engaging, their approach is scholarly and serious. It is so easy for students (and indeed others who should know better) to trivialize this very problematic and challenging subject. This is not the case with the present book. This is a book that deserves to achieve a wide readership. Professor Stephen Ackroyd, Lancaster University, UK This new textbook usefully situates organization theory within the scholarly debates on modernism and postmodernism, and provides an advanced introduction to the heterogeneous study of organizations, including chapters on phenomenology, critical theory and psychoanalysis. Like all good textbooks, the book is accessible, well researched and readers are encouraged to view chapters as a starting point for getting to grips with the field of organization theory. Dr Martin Brigham, Lancaster University, UK McAuley et al. provide a highly readable account...
