Although the average person is accustomed to the world of Excel and Access, there are other database programs and spread sheets out there; other spreadsheets that will prove to be just as effective and low in cost as opposed to Excel and Access.
In our digital world full of digital citizens there has been an epilogue of database programs and spreadsheets that have cornered the web search engines of all computers. One of those spreadsheets known as GNUMERIC was released on December 31, 2001. The founding father of GNUMERIC was a man named Miguel de Icaza. Miguel de Icaza founded GNUMERIC in Mexico City. He was known for coordinating the development of a graphical interface called GNOME (Technology Review, 1999). However he passed it on to a woman named Jody Goldberg who is currently maintaining the site (Linux Insider, 2012). GNUMERIC is currently being developed by an organization called the GNOME project. The GNOME project is a community of software developers, artist and active users of the GNOME. The newest version of the spreadsheet out is GNUMERIC 1.12.18. GNUMERIC is more than a simple calculated program; it is a fully functional spreadsheet capable of manipulating and analyzing numeric data (Linux Insider, 2012). Some of the benefits of GNUMERIC are that it has several features and offers 100% of the worksheet functions in Microsoft Excel. Outside of some of the newer spreadsheets GNUMERIC possesses 154 functions not found in the commercial business spreadsheets (Linux Insider, 2012). GNUMERIC can also help you keep track of information in lists, organize numeric values in columns and rows , while helping to perform and update complex calculations by defining each step of the calculation. Other advantages of GNUMERIC were that it could open Excel .xls files that even Excel couldn’t
