The Beautiful Island of Oahu

Aloha. The most beautiful place that I have ever been would have to be the island Oahu. It is just everything that you could ask for in a place of enjoyment, weather, and people. I’ve been there probably a total of five times thanks to the United States Navy. There is so much to do on Oahu that it seems overwhelming at times. Every time I went there I had to do something different. I’ve stayed at Honolulu and North Shore multiple times. Honolulu gives you the great night life and thrill of awesome street performers. While North Shore gives you the amazing sound of waves crashing in on the shore and sunsets that are like paintings in the sky. You can also kayak to China Man’s Hat which is cool because the little island has some very nice spots to snorkel with colorful fish of the pacific. The weather on Oahu is to die for, at times. Some days it is so warm that you can do anything outside like biking, swimming, hiking, and surfing. Then there are days that are just dreadful, when it’s raining like crazy and some of the streets flood in no time. Sometimes these storms last for days and leave you locked inside most of the time. So the best time to go is the summer which is when we normally went for RIMPAC. The people of Oahu are very friendly and outgoing. I went on a lot of tours while there and the guides and people from the island really know how to make you never want to leave. They can cook some very tasteful food, which you typically won’t find here in the U.S. For example, spam, eggs, and rice for breakfast was by far the best thing you can get in the morning that really filled you up. It tasted so delightful and just went so well with one another. The people also covered the streets with so many talents like singing, dancing, musicians, and art crafts. I would still like to see the other islands of Hawaii eventually. So, for now these are the reasons that play a huge role in why I feel that the island of Oahu is the most beautiful place on earth. There are many other things that make island beautiful but you will just have to find out for yourself.

...Philosophy is a vast subject that not only gives person knowledge about important perspectives in different societies but also a deeper and meaningful understanding of how the world around us works. Using the knowledge from this class, I am taking Buddhism and relating it with one of the most popular site for tourists in Oahu, Hawaii, the Byodo-In Temple. The temple, as I see it, stands as an icon for what Hawaii is and what the idea of Buddhism has to do in Hawaii. The temple maybe a religious site for those who follow Buddhism, or the ones who would like to view it from a religious point of view. But more importantly, it stands as a living proof of the influences of the immigrants in Hawaii and what religious philosophies they brought along with them when they came in, or what they give importance to. Also, another perspective is how Hawaii wants to structure itself with the potential of income from Japanese tourists, given that Byodo-In Temple is a beautiful imitation of temple in Japan. Having been born in Nepal, where about one third of the populations follow Buddhism, I was always interested in knowing the cultural and the key philosophical concepts of Buddhism. As with every other thing, Buddhism too has its own philosophical concepts and understandings. Buddhism, which was first spread by Gautama Buddha, has philosophical concepts and understandings to explain as to why it was started, and what Buddhism tries to convey. The primary concept of Buddhism-- Enlightenment...

While you may think a trip to Hawaii is too expensive, I feel traveling is one of the most important things we can do as a family. Hawaii has so much to offer us including traveling between 3 primary islands and exploring what each island has to offer like hiking the waterfalls and visiting the Pearl Harbor memorial. You would love the surfing, snorkeling and all the water activities that come along with a trip to Hawaii. Even though all of you may feel a trip to Hawaii is too expensive, I feel traveling is one of the most important things I can do for the family. I don’t feel you can put a price tag on the quality time you get when you go on vacation and have the chance to make so many lasting memories. Taking the family on vacation to a place like Hawaii gives them first hand information and the knowledge on how other people live and the cultures they live by. How will you ever be able to see and explore Hawaii unless you open up your mind to all the possibilities? The possibilities are endless when you have 3 great islands to explore. The first one we would be the visiting “The Heart of Hawaii” also known as Oahu is home to the war memorial Pearl Harbor, the USS Battleship Missouri, unforgettable Luau’s and wonderful cuisine. Hawaii Legends

...HAWAII LEGENDS: Introduction by King Kalakaua, 1888 Geography: Physical Characteristics The Hawaiian Islands occupy a place in the great expanse of the Pacific “between the nineteenth and twenty third degrees north latitude, and the one hundred and fifty fourth degrees of longitude west of Greenwich. They are two thousand one hundred miles southwest from San Francisco, and about the same distance from Tahiti. The group consists of ten islands*, including two that are little more than barren rocks. The farthest are about three hundred miles from each other, measuring from their extreme boundaries, and their aggregate area is a little more than six thousand one hundred square miles. Of the eight principal islands all are habitable, although the small islands of Niihau and Kahoolawe are used almost exclusively as cattle-ranges. The most of the shores of the several islands are fringed with coral, but their origins seem to indisputably show in the numerous creates of extinct volcanoes scattered throughout the group, and in the mighty fires still blazing from the mountain-heights of Hawaii. By far the largest part of the area of the islands is mountainous; but from the interior elevations, some of them reaching altitude of from ten to fourteen thousand feet, flow many small streams of sweet water, widening into fertile valleys as they reach the coast, while here and there between them alluvial plateaus have been left by the upland wash. With rare exceptions the...

Hawaii

...Hannah Renay Doyle Mrs. Hodgenson English II-4 May 1, 2012 Aloha Hawaii Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches, its nice year-round weather, and its culture. Thousand of vacationers come to Hawaii each year to get away from the stressful city and relax. People can go to the beaches, take tours and many other things. The Hawaii is ranks 47th in size among the 50 states (Hawaii – location, size, and extent). Long time ago people from Hawaii think that Pele and Ailaau made the islands. When Pele got to the high mountain she used her magic stick to make the crater. Then this guy Ailaau wanted to live on the state too. One day they both wanted to be the ruler of that state. They started fighting and throwing fireballs at each other and that’s how they made the islands (The Birth Hawaii). In the early religion of Hawaii the indigenous culture spread amount the islands. Hawaiian scholar Mary Kawena Pukui, who was raised in Ka’u, Hawaii maintained that the early Hawaiian gods were benign. Author and researcher Pali Jae Lee writes “During these ancient times, the only religion was one of family oneness with all things. The people were in tune with nature, plants, trees, animals, the ‘aina, and each other. They respected all things and took care of all things, all was pano.” They also think that it’s a wonderful thing to have a spirits of the dead and the angels. Paper on a Cultural Event

...Paper on a Cultural Event HUM/100 02/03/2011 University of Phoenix In May 2007, I took a long flight to the Hawaiian Island Oahu. I flew into Honolulu airport for a 15-day vacation. Samoans greeted me saying, “Aloha’’, which is their greeting word. The trip was a life experience. The natives on the island were very spiritual and musical. All around the island natives were singing dancing and playing instruments. The natives were also skilled in the art of fire knife dance. This was only something that I have seen only on TV and for the first time I am watching in person. The entire trip was a culture event. Samoan Culture My first stop was the Polynesian Culture Center home of the Samoan Fire Knife Dance award winning Ali’I Luau. The 42-acre Polynesian Cultural Center has the largest night show. The show features more than one hundred performers. Fire Walkers and Fire Knife Walkers has been a part of Samoan Culture since the beginning of their civilization 200 years ago. This was something I have watched on TV. In person, watching each performer, he or she can see the passion in their eyes, and he or she could tell they lived it. Not only did the performers do this as an island attraction they did performances with just family and friends at the beach or a family cookout. I thought it was interesting to see even with all the world’s modernizations the Samoan s left time in their lives for family traditions. This was a cultural shock to me to see ancient traditions still...

People from near and far travel to this tropical paradise to enjoy the unique wildlife found under the surface of the water. Thou human impact and climate change has cause a loss of valuable habits for many of these beautiful organisms. Artificial reefs have been use to great effect to create new homes for marine life. Pearl Harbor

...Pearl Harbor, the Beginning of the End of the Rising Sun As I flew in from the north of Oahu, the sunburst broke through the clouds off the horizon of the ocean in front of us. I couldn’t help to think to myself what a beautiful site for us to see. The gods must be looking upon us. Letting us know of a successful and glorious mission. It took all of about 2 hours to fly our 360 planes that consisted of dive and high level bombers, fighters and torpedo planes the 230 miles to the harbor of pearl. It was 8:05 when my bomb pierced its target. The bomb had hit the forward powder magazine of the USS Arizona. The mighty explosion split the great ship in half, taking only nine minutes for her to sink (A Summary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor, 2012). Now that we are out of the box looking in, this is what a Japanese pilot might have felt as he flew his plane on that haunting yet unforgettable mission to that bay at Pearl; for he was on his way of creating history from the destruction of an entire fleet in anchor. This Japanese warrior and his culture of war would not know the consequences of his emperor’s actions; for it would only unite an entire country in a fit of rage from this horrific and unprovoked act initiated by the rising sun nation of Japan. This battle would not only be the beginning of WWII for the United States, but it would be the beginning of the end of a military force in Japan. It was this mission and Japan’s cultural importance of war that...

Business Research Part One

...Business Research Part One Learning Team D RES/351 April 15, 2013 Business Research Part One An increasing number of solar panels are popping up on the rooftops of homes and businesses across the Hawaiian Islands. Although this is beneficial to homeowners, businesses, and the environment, the Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) grid systems cannot handle reciprocating the increasing photovoltaic energy. Fears of the entire system crashing could happen if the right actions are not taken (McCoy, 2013). In this research, Learning Team D looks at HECO to determine what actions they need to take to solve this solar issue. First the team provides research questions and hypotheses as well as variables and ethical considerations HECO should think about. Second they discuss the significance, scope, magnitude, and feasibility. Last they end with the research’s purpose and teams’ conclusion. Research Questions What type of action is involved to build smart grids and provide installation of advanced meters in neighborhoods across Oahu? How will smart electric grid technology improve electric service? At HECO, management focuses on solving the problem by upgrading their technology system to provide adequate electric service in urban areas of east Honolulu. HECO completes the East Oahu Transmission Project to improve the electric systems responsiveness and efficiency. Smart grids approach would save money and it allows HECO to limit the construction impacts to the surrounding community (Hawaii’s...

...is sunny and hot. It is noon and everything around is in ruins. Car wrecks and old military outposts scatter throughout the entire city, revealing a horrible and desolate war zone rather than a beautiful and prosperous city that it once was. Then there are footsteps approaching close by. A young woman is walking through the ruins, scavenging for materials and any other useful thing that she can find. As she looks around there is no one else in sight for miles. It is just her and against the world. Even though there are no humans left, there are other... inhabitants that roam the ruins of Honolulu. From the experience that she has with them... they don't like humans. Around three in the afternoon while she was scavenging for supplies, she caused a loud noise that caused the wreckage to scatter all over the ground. It may seem like a simple blunder, but what she did right there was essentially signing her own death warrant. The so called "residents" were attracted by the noise and soon began to "meet" her. Their skin was grey, eyes were yellow as lemons, and their flesh was rotting away. Others would call them abominations, which they were, but they bear the name most people know them as zombies. Worst part is, there are literally thousands of them scattered all over the island, always searching for new food and people to feast on. They were walking at a dead man's pace, but don't let that fool you. They are lethal if not engaged them properly, and they will kill anything...

...EXERCISE I. What is a paragraph? Some of these groups of sentences are paragraphs and some are not. Read them carefully and answer the questions. 1- Iceland is not a place for the ordinary tourist. The landscape, for example, is bare and strange—though many consider it beautiful in its own way. Then, too, the far northern climate is not ideal for tourism. The winter weather is extremely severe and the summers are short and cool, with constant strong winds. The remote location also means that many products have to be imported and so they are expensive. However, the few tourists who do put up with these difficulties are warmly welcomed by the Icelanders. Is this a paragraph? _______ If it is a paragraph, what is it about? _____________________________________________ 2- For fewer tourists, lower prices, and more beautiful scenery, head for the Sagres Peninsula. The regional museum has a rich collection of costumes, weapons, and handicrafts. Buses will get you to most places, but for long trips, trains are cheaper and more comfortable. The Portuguese economy has expanded very rapidly in recent years, but it still has many problems. In the fifteenth century, Lisbon was a worldwide center of political power, religion, and culture. ...This attack was unforeseen that it was impossible to fight against one another. Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor because the wanted to destroy the US carriers and battleships that were concentrated in the harbor in order to operate freely in Asia (Kelly, 48). United States placed an embargo to prohibit Japan from sending steel, scrap iron, and aviation fuel. Japan seemed to be enraged by what they did, so supposedly, they had sent out a notice to know when they will be attacking, but it arrived after the war happened. Before the attack started, the Japanese planes that were headed towards Pearl Harbor was mistaken for flights from America. Submarines, aircraft, vessels were all ruined. Before Japan invaded Oahu, there were eight main battleships: USS Arizona, Missouri, Nevada, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Detroit, Raleigh, Utah, Tangier. Unexpectedly, several minutes before the war started, most of the battleships were attacked or have sunken. The USS Arizona battleship could not be retrieved after it blew up and sank, carrying more than 1,000 men. Till this day, bodies still remain in the waters. Out of all the battleships, USS Utah...
