Part 1: Brief Essays – the Beauty Myth

1) In Wolf’s “Chapter 6: Hunger” in the Beauty Myth she argues that anorexia and bulimia is taking over women in the West. She claims that, “Women must claim anorexia as political damage done to us by a social order that considers our destruction insignificant because of what we are-less,” (Wolf, 208). I agree with the feminist perspective in “Hunger” that women are affected by pop culture and media to starve themselves until the point where they are unstable. Unfortunately, many women in the US are influenced to look like women in pop culture, however this has caused millions of suicides and health issues that …show more content…
In (h)ooks’ “Chapter 11 Ending Violence?” she argues that domestic and patriarchal violence has become a commonality. She claims that most individuals believe that violence is hypersezualized towards men, however there is also domestic violence with women to women and parents to children. For example, she states that, “our nation masses of people are concerned about violence but resolutely refuse to link that violence to patriarchal thinking or male domination,” ((h)ooks, 66). I agree with with (h)ooks’ feminist analysis and believe that we need to make this solution for everyone who is struggling physically and …show more content…
C) This ad is selling Magnum Mini Ice cream bars, and sex. The ad portrays the “female body” as a highly sexualized object. In the photo, there is a woman who clearly looks like she has an orgasim, but who looks like this when they are having ice cream?! The ad says, “Mini size Maximum Pleasure” on it, sending a message that they are selling sex with their product. I definitely do not find this ad empowering because I know that I would never eat my ice cream like this, and can not believe an ice cream industry would sell their products in such an unprofessional way.

10. D) There are a variety of political and feminist issues of the image of the young hispanic girl who spoke at the Women’s March in Washington D.C. She spoke her heart out with her articulate and inspiring speech. Women are resisting and challenging injustices by marching and protesting causing an action feminist praxis. This young girl speaks for every generation, above and below her. She is so empowering to the current movement that is going on worldwide and will definitely be remembered in history because of her powerful voice that will never be forgotten.

Rhetorical Analysis on Covergirl Ad

...In my rhetorical analysis of the CoverGirl advertisement I analysis three rhetorical tools that are strongly conveyed to me. The advertisement uses these rhetorical tools to further persuaded audiences to buy the CoverGirl product and even stick with the brand. In this analysis I will cover the rhetorical appeals that try to convince viewers that the product is superior, the use of myth and how it is used to strengthen the persuasiveness of the advertisement, and the rhetorical situation of the advertisement. Let us move onto rhetorical appeal Rhetorical appeal is a very good way to structure any persuasive document and when used correctly it can service its purpose well. Let’s analysis how this persuasive advertisement uses rhetorical appeal. Pathos in this advertisement is very straight forward; it wants the view to be curious but also excited with a hint of wonder or in other words it wants “to raise emotions” (Aristotle, n.d. p. 146) within a viewer. The use of Taylor Swift along with the mention of more bang for your buck, since this cream can beat ones that cost $180, would draw on a viewer’s emotion and cause them to be persuaded because their idol is advertising a product that she, Taylor Swift, is using daily to perfect her skin and it isn’t an expensive designer brand. Next we will focus on logos and its use in this advertisement. Logos is the “logical appeals [that] stress the reasonableness” (Aristotle, n.d p. 146). This advertisement relies heavily on...

Venus becomes angry that her temples are falling to ruin, so she plots to ruin Psyche. She instructs her son, Cupid, to pierce the girl with an arrow and make her fall in love with the most vile, hideous man alive. But when Cupid sees Psyche in her radiant glory, he shoots himself with the arrow instead. Meanwhile, Psyche and her family become worried that she will never find a husband, for although men admire her beauty, they always seem content to marry someone else. Psyche's father prays to Apollo for help, and Apollo instructs her to go to the top of a hill, where she will marry not a man but a serpent. Psyche bravely follows the instructions and falls asleep on the hill. When she wakes up, she discovers a stunning mansion. Going inside, she relaxes and enjoys fine food and luxurious treatment. At night, in the dark, she meets and falls in love with her husband. She lives happily with him, never seeing him, until one day he tells her that her sisters have been crying for her. She begs to see them, but her husband replies that it would not be wise to do so. Psyche insists that they visit, and when they do, they become extremely jealous of Psyche's beautiful mansion and lush quarters. ...definition of myth: “a popular belief or tradition that has grown up around something or someone; especially: one embodying the ideals and institutions of a society or segment of society.” Poignantly, this definition does not include the common correlation between myth and falsification. While myth may include ostensible histories or exaggerated events, falsification is not crucial nor significant in the creation of myth. Whether or not a culture’s myth relies on scientific or historical fact is irrelevant to the core of its application. A culture’s myth or belief is vital in the realm of their world view, stresses, and precedencies, not its...

Foundations of Mythology

...the word “myth” is generally used to describe urban legends. Urban legends are false stories, told as if they were true, and passed on to others. Myth, in this context, is defined as stories that undergo a series of events sharing characteristics of legends and folktales. These stories, present themselves in our everyday lives through fictional characters, such as Tooth Fairy or Cupid. In an academic setting, the word “myth” is used to describe ancient narratives that attempt to answer the enduring and fundamental human questions such as creation (Leonard & McClure, p. 1, 2004). The word mythology is derived from both Greek words mythos and logos. The academic study of mythology could be described as the logical thinking used to produce mythical thinking; hence mythos forms the structure in which logos is employed. I would describe myths as an unexplainable or unknown actual event created by individuals to make sense of the unknown. Creation is a perfect example of this. Cultures around the world have different Myths. They all share the basic human desire to understand life and its meaning. Claude Lévi-Strauss expresses similar sentiments about myth’s functions when he postulates that myths serve to mediate conflicting or dualistic elements of society and life and conflicting nature of human beings are same around the world. (Leonard & McClure, p. 18, 2004). Creation is one of the most popular myths. Most cultures have a creation myth. The cultures...

Media Literacy

...Media Literacy I have advocated for 30 years that, in order to preserve our democracy and protect ourselves against demagogues, we should have courses in schools on how to watch TV, how to read newspapers, how to analyze a speech – how to understand the limitations of each medium and make a judgment as to the accuracy or the motives involved. (Cronkite) Media’s influence on society is powerful and far-reaching because they introduce us to new and different images that affect our personalities and perceptions of the world we live in. A report by the Free Expression Policy Project has shown that media glamorize violence, sex, drugs, and alcohol; reinforce stereotypes about race, gender, and class; and prescribe the lifestyle to which one should aspire, and the products one must buy to attain it (Hines and Cho 2). If society wants to correct these negative influences of media, Walter Cronkite’s message on the need for media literacy is therefore imperative. Media literacy, defined by AMLA as the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate information in a variety of forms, will empower us to be both critical thinkers and creative producers of a wide range of messages using image, language, and sound (Center for Media Literacy). By becoming media literate, it is hope that we will have a better understanding of ourselves, our communities, and our diverse culture. To showcase the importance of media literacy, analyses of news and commercial media are...

King Arthur

...King Arthur – Characters’ Analysis To give a myth, story, or any work of literature the ability to lure the reader in, it’s critical that the writer make the characters relatable. When the reader is able to connect to one or more of the characters, they can transfer many of their own feelings, struggles or life experiences onto the story itself. Even when the characters are portrayed with god-like qualities or traits, they often still exhibit some traits of mortality which tends to give the reader a perceived one on one connection. As a child, and as the eventual King, Arthur’s ideals, morals and overall character change very little. He is always depicted as a feeling, considerate person who uses his abilities, skills, and influence for the betterment of his people. In the story of King Arthur, from our book, Arthur is presented as a larger than life hero and warrior that is pre-ordained to become king through divine intervention. The book’s story also has him battling giants, monsters and sorcerers. However, I felt the movie shown him to be more mortal and susceptible to mortal weaknesses. There wasn’t so much of a divine force influencing the plot and characters, so much as a force of deep loyalty, moral and ethical tones. Arthur shows some traits of immaturity when he is a child, but I believe this is another way the writer attempts to convey to the reader Author’s mortal side and vulnerabilities. His immaturity is short lived and he quickly takes on the characteristics...

English language. doi: 10.1386/safm.1.1.65/1 Looking for Love in All the White Places: A Study of Skin Color Preferences on Indian Matrimonial and Mate-Seeking Websites Sonora Jha Seattle University Mara Adelman Seattle University Abstract A preference for light skinned females is a global bias that affects all areas of human relationships, especially in marital mate selection. Further intensified by the meteoric rise in Internet dating and mate selection, this bias often serves an invalidating function for darker-skinned women. This study (1) analyzed ‘profiles’ and ‘preferences’ of brides and grooms (N=200), and (2) coded ‘success story wedding photos’ (N=200) posted on four Indian matrimonial websites. Results showed an overwhelming bias among males for brides lighter-skinned than themselves. Males were also more likely than females to state a preference for skin color in their prospective brides, and to use qualitative words like ‘beautiful’ and ‘lovely’ to describe their preferred match. Most significantly, the ‘success story’ wedding photos consistently had lighter-skinned brides than grooms. Darkskinned women were almost non-existent in these ‘success stories.’ This research points to a technology-abetted intensification of colorism. That is to say that the powerful profile ‘menu’ options and the visual imagery of predominantly...

Analysis of an Advertisement

...ANALYSIS OF AN ADVERTISEMENT TITLE: ANALYSIS OF LONGINES ADVERTISEMENT The Following analysis is about a watch that appears in an ad for Diamonds International St. Lucia. A watch is being advertised of which Diamonds International is the exclusive agent in Saint Lucia. The brand of watch is Longines. The ad appeared in Visions of St. Lucia page 19, Volume 2, 2011 edition. The ad also appeared in the Visions of St. Lucia as this publication is the premier advertising magazine, St. Lucian businesses use to market the products and services they sell. Visions of St. Lucia is the local publication created for St. Lucians and visitors alike so that they can find out what products and services are available across the island. It must also be noted that Diamonds International market their products exclusively to visitors especially high-end visitors who require pricey items. The ad suggests that the Longines watch appears to be a high-end product because the former Ms. Universe Aishwarya Rai is wearing it. Normally Ms. Universe winners are synonymous with high-end products and fashion. Miss Universe also appears in strictly expensive product commercials. (New York Times 2008) The environment that she is in modelling the watch as well as the dress she is wearing indicates that the product is an extremely pricey product. It is these features likewise the distributor Diamonds International that suggest that the item is a luxury item; made for the wealthy and well fortuned market...

Dadaism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism

...DADAISM * Dadaism is a cultural movement that began in Zurich, Switzerland, during World War I and peaked from 1916 to 1922. It was shared by independent groups in New York, Berlin, Paris and elsewhere. * The movement was a protest against the barbarism of the War; works of anti-art that deliberately defied reason. * Dadaism primarily involved visual arts, literature, poetry, theatre, and graphic design. Its purpose was to ridicule what its participants considered to be the meaninglessness of the modern world. In addition to being anti-war, dada was also anti-bourgeois and anarchistic in nature. According to its proponents, Dada was not art; it was anti-art. For everything that art stood for, Dada was to represent the opposite. Where art was concerned with aesthetics, Dada ignored them. If art is to have at least an implicit or latent message, Dada strives to have no meaning. Interpretation of Dada is dependent entirely on the viewer. If art is to appeal to sensibilities, Dada offends. Perhaps it is then ironic that Dada is an influential movement in Modern art. Dada became a commentary on art and the world, thus becoming art itself.” * The Dadaists channelled their revulsion at World War I into an indictment of the nationalist and materialist values that had brought it about. They were united not by a common style but by a rejection of conventions in art and thought, seeking through their unorthodox techniques, performances and provocations to shock society...

Kubla Khan

...Analysis of ‘Kubla Khan’ regarding Colonial Discourse: As a product of the complex discursive web of the 18th century, the Orientalist Coleridge could not act out of such historical forces as colonialism that had gone into shaping him and his poetry. He, in post colonial discourse, was unable to go parallel with the theory of ‘Arts for Arts sake’ and ‘Willing Suspension of Disbelief’. In Kubla Khan,Coleridge is trying to establish the heagemony of Abyssinian Christianity which according to him is more pure and can only be revived by colonizers by the song of Abyssinian maid. These lines make this idea more clear: Could I revive within me Her symphony and song, To such deep delight ‘twould win me That with music loud and long, I would build that dome within the air! It is showing his hatred of corrupt religion of the East. His desire is to free mankind from political tyranny of tyrannical despots represented in the figure of Kubla. Although Kubla Khan was the conqueror and master of the world ... in Coleridge's view he was really no more than a passing historical representative cast up from the central 'Romantic chasm' . Kubla, a man of military skill and known for his administrative capabilities was called by the Mongols as Setsen Khan (The Wise Khan). Person Perception

...Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology, 41, 258-290). Asch found that initial information carries greater weight than subsequent information. An example of such; a person we have just met makes an initial intelligent comment but subsequently says several things that sound not so intelligent. The early intelligent comment would carry a disproportion influence on the impression we have of this person. Physical attractiveness heavily influences first impressions. People immediately assume that handsome and beautiful people are intelligent, healthy and have great social skills (cited in Feingold, A.
