1. What is auditor independence and what is its significance to the audit profession? What is the difference between independence in appearance and independence in fact?
Auditor independence involves the auditor and the company being audited. It requires them to maintain separate business and personal relations. This is imperative because personal feelings can hinder the ability of an auditor to perform the required tasks. Expectations and assumptions can result from this as well. It is expected from an auditor that they be independent and unbiased. This is imperative when they are dealing with the financial statements because it is extremely important that they be impartial during the audit, which means that personal relations and former employees with strong relationships with there former employers would not concede to these standards. Independence in appearance is avoiding financial and managerial relationships with clients; this is necessary because this is the only portion that the public can actually see. The general public will only grant social recognition of professional status to auditors when they are perceived as independent. Independence in fact to the contrary from appearance is the ability for an auditor to remain unbiased during an audit of financials. Independence is the first aspect of an audit that the public sees. Although all stages of an audit are of equal importance, it is the independence aspect that can affect the entire audit. By merely assuming management has good internal controls and they are not overstating revenue it is important to rule out personal relationships.

2. In what ways might Andersen’s independence in fact or in appearance might have been affected?

Science and God

... such logic assumes that time has always existed, rather than being merely a construct of this universe. Rich Deem Who created God? It is an age-old question that has plagued all those who like to think about the big questions. Having grown up as an agnostic non-Christian, it provided me with a potential reason why there might not be any god. Various religions tend to solve the problem in different ways. The LDS church (Mormonism) says that the God (Elohim) to whom we are accountable had a father god, then grew up on a planet as a man, and progressed to become a god himself. Many other religions have claimed that gods beget other gods. Of course the problem with this idea is how did the first god get here? This problem of infinite regression invalidates such religions. Christianity claims that God has always existed. Is this idea even possible? Does science address such issues? Christianity's answer Christianity answers the question of who made God in the very first verse of the very first book, Genesis: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1) This verse tells us that God was acting before time when He created the universe. Many other verses from the New Testament tell us that God was acting before time began, and so, He created time, along with the other dimensions of our universe: No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. (1 Corinthians 2:7) ...

...University PHSC 210-A12 LUO August 12, 2013 Introduction We are aware that the universe exists, regardless; it is human nature to search for a deeper understanding. The controversial debate concerning the Big Bang Theory and a Six-Day Creation has been around for centuries. For years, thousands of people, including the “greatest minds in physics,” have pondered the beginning of the universe. Curiosity has led to questions of how the universe began (LaRocco & Rothstein, n.d.). Many scientists believe the earth to have always been in existence (Chown, 2012). Others, however, believe the opposite; they believe in the creation of our universe. Whether one believes in a scientific development of the universe, or in a higher power of creation, there are two sides to every debate. In this paper, each side will be explained, discussed and compared and contrasted. The Big Bang Theory Many people believed at one time that the universe we know today had no beginning or an end. However, through research, the Big Bang Theory proved that the universe was not infinite. The universe has a history and most certainly a beginning (LaRocco & Rothstein, n.d.). According to many scientists, the Big Bang happened about 15 billion years ago. This event was an enormous explosion “filling all of space with all of the particles of the embryonic universe” (LaRocco &Rothstein, n.d.). However, unlike a bomb exploding fragments outward, the explosion of the universe was an explosion within itself...

Philosophy - Cosmological Argument

...What distinguishes the kalam cosmological argument from other forms of cosmological argument is that it rests on the idea that the universe has a beginning in time. Modal forms of the cosmological argument are consistent with the universe having an infinite past. According to the kalam cosmological argument, however, it is precisely because the universe is thought to have a beginning in time that its existence is thought to stand in need of explanation. This argument has the following logical structure: The Kalam Cosmological Argument (1) Everything that has a beginning of its existence has a cause of its existence. (2) The universe has a beginning of its existence. Therefore: (3) The universe has a cause of its existence. (4) If the universe has a cause of its existence then that cause is God. Therefore: (5) God exists. The first premise of the argument is the claim that everything that begins to exist has a cause of its existence. In order to infer from this that the universe has a cause of its existence the proponent of the kalam cosmological argument must prove that the past is finite, that the universe began to exist at a certain point in time. The crucial premise of the kalam cosmological argument, then, is the second: “The universe has a beginning of its existence”. How do we know that the universe has a beginning of...

The Giver Vs Pleasantville Analysis

...The Giver vs. Pleasantville Comparative Essay In both works, The Giver and Pleasantville, leaders symbolize control and elsewhere represent new beginnings. Leaders symbolize control. The first example I have for Pleasantville is the time when the Mayor does not allow Bud to speak and defend himself at his trial. wAfter art wreaked havoc and chaos across Pleasantville, Bud and Mr. Johnson decided to paint another painting across the jail walls. At their trial, the judge was the mayor. During the trial, the mayor himselfs asks Bud if there was anything that he wanted to say to defend himself. Bud said "yes," and began speaking. The mayor immediately cut him off because the mayor wasn't hearing what he wanted to. This shows that the Mayor is a...

...instead, it is retained for investments in working capital and/or fixed assets, as well as to pay down any liabilities outstanding. The calculation is: + Beginning retained earnings + Net income during the period - Dividends paid = Ending retained earnings It is also possible that a change in accounting principle will require that a company restate its beginning retained earnings balance to account for retroactive changes to its financial statements. This will alter the beginning balance portion of the formula. It is quite possible that a company will have negative retained earnings. This can be caused by the distribution of a large dividend that exceeds the balance in the retained earnings account, or by the incurrence of large losses that more than offset the normal balance in the retained earnings account. There may be pressure from investors to issue a dividend if a company has built up a large balance in its retained earnings account over time, though this argument is not necessarily valid if the company still has profitable opportunities in which it can invest the excess funds. For example, ABC International has $500,000 of net profits in its current year, pays out $150,000 for dividends, and has a beginning retained earnings balance of $1,200,000. Its retained earnings calculation is: + $1,200,000 Beginning retained earnings + $500,000 Net income - $150,000 Dividends = $1,550,000 Ending retained earnings Because all profits and losses flow through retained...

Why Strategic Human Resource Management Is Important for an Organizarion

...1) Human resource management (HRM) becomes SHRM when the workforce is well trained so that they seek competitive advantage. Only a committed workforce may not contribute in competitive edge (Mavin, 2000). For an instance, Ann had not had a proper training before staring her shifts. Even if she is hard working and leaves a nice touch after her work, she might not be contributing in competitive advantage for KCS over other cleaning organizations. Furthermore, HRM should take place in the early stage of a corporate planning to make it SHRM. It is not about fixing employment problem in middle of organization’s operation. It is integrated with corporate strategy so that organization can have the right people at the right place at the right time(Van Donk, 2001). For example, Ann was struggling about the appraisal system because she was not aware of it while she joined KCS. Finally, authority and HR managers must have a channel for communication. Effectively HR managers will assess the role of a employee to achieve organizational goals. If senior management does not listen to HR managers, employees they will be hiring will not be able to help in organizational mission and vision. For instance, KCS did not plan what they will be doing with Ann for future; instead they employed Ann as their client base got increased. Assessing the purpose of SHRM (AC 1.2)\ Firstly, as discussed earlier, only a committed workforce is not enough to achieve competitive advantage. Ann should have...

...accomplish. Our team realized the importance of goals in the beginning and that is why we were able to achieve every goal that was set in the initial meeting. The following were our goals that we set for the group: 1. Be prompt for all calls-each team member usually arrived 10-15 minutes early for every call that was scheduled. 2. Respect for each other’s time by communicating to the team leader if unable to participate in the calls-each member of the team made every call that was scheduled. 3. Everyone was expected to participate in the calls-every member of the team actively participated in the calls providing feedback when needed. E2. Motivation Strategies Motivating a team can be more challenging than motivating one person because each person within the team has different personalities, values, beliefs and goals. If a team can capitalize on each team member’s positive traits that they bring to the group, it will enable the team to be motivated and achieve more. Every team needs some form of motivation to accomplish its goals. Our team effectively established motivation strategies right from the start in the first meeting and we utilized them throughout the duration of the class. Our group realized the importance of motivation and made it a top priority. We established in the beginning that one strategy for our group would be non-aggressive positive reinforcement. We utilized this strategy many times through email exchange with positive feedback and...
