The Big Questions

...Kristen Cuce Professor Price Discussion 2 July 13, 2016 I chose to discuss and answer questions to the poem “Hazel Tells LaVerne” by Katharyn Howd Machan. 1. Who is the speaker? Is it possible to determine the speaker’s age, sex, sensibilities, level of awareness, and values? The speaker is Hazel. She is a woman who seems to be of lower class and a bit uneducated due to the way some of the words are spelled. 5. Does reading this poem out loud help you understand it? Reading this particular poem out loud did help me understand it a bit more. By reading it aloud I was able to pronounce certain words such as “hitsm” and “sohelpmegod”. It also gave me the idea that she may have been speaking with an accent with the way some words are spelled. 7. What does the title emphasize? I think the title emphasizes that this is a story from one person to another person, or in this case a frog. After reading the poem I can also tell from the title that by giving the frog a name they are making it to be as if he is a person. 14. What is the tone of the poem? Is the tone consistent? I believe the tone of the poem is playful. It is a woman talking to a frog in a bathroom about becoming a princess. However, I think that the tone changes when the frog asks her to kiss him. She becomes serious and screams “ya little green pervert” and continues to flush him down the toilet. 20. Did you enjoy reading the poem? What, specifically, pleased or displeased you about what was expressed...

Unanswered

...Unanswered In life, there is a set of questions that causes people to question their purpose in the world. These questions were designed to be simply that; questions. They have no answer and once the answer seems to become apparent, it changes into a defining moment, according to Jim Tilley. These defining moments that were once questions are the things that document our lives and how far we have come. Jim Tilley wrote the poem The Big Questions to talk about and parallel these things with everyday life. “The big questions are big only/ because they have never been answered (line 1/2).” Jim Tilley begins his poem The Big Questions, by posing a philosophical statement in which the audience begins to ponder what these questions might be. A typical big question that people face is what is my purpose here? Before reading the poem, I expected an answer to this question or at least another philosophical statement for afterthought. However, Tilley uses philosophy as well as humor to convey that there is not a concrete answer to these “big questions”. These “big questions” are only circumstantially large and will in time become unimportant. These big questions often have more depth to them than their philosophical nature. They can in turn be used to determine survival instincts and maturity. The example he uses is encountering a grizzly bear in the woods while hiking a trail. In most cases, when someone encounters a bear they have three options. The first and foremost being to run...

John Lennon Nihilism

...Imagine is a song by John Lennon which I believe talks about a specific worldview; Nihilism. Today I'm going to prove why. From reading the song lyrics, I believe that John Lennon is a Nihilist, which means John doesn't believe there's a heaven or hell. The lyrics say "There is no heaven, it's easy if you try, no hell below us, above us only the sky." With worldviews like Nihilism, there's this thing called "7 big questions about worldviews" One of the questions are "What do you believe happens after death?" Referring back to my evidence: "There's no heaven it's easy if you try no hell below us, above only just the sky" that's where this quote fits in perfectly to answer that specific question. I shall continue proving & expanding my evidence...

...characteristics: Inverse demand for taxi trips is given by the function, P = 90 − Q . 1000 In this equation, P is the price of a taxi trip, and Q is the total quantity of taxi trips supplied by licensed taxi companies. The marginal cost, to a taxi company, of supplying a taxi trip is $18. A taxi company’s only fixed cost is the cost of purchasing a licence from the Government Taxi Authority. Question 1: Suppose that the Government Taxi Authority issues only one license, to Big Ben Taxis. Assuming uniform pricing, find the quantity of taxi trips that Big Ben Taxis will choose to supply, and the price at which these trips will be sold. Neglecting the cost of the license, what profit will Big Ben Taxis earn. Comparative Essay

...search for a deeper understanding. The controversial debate concerning the Big Bang Theory and a Six-Day Creation has been around for centuries. For years, thousands of people, including the “greatest minds in physics,” have pondered the beginning of the universe. Curiosity has led to questions of how the universe began (LaRocco & Rothstein, n.d.). Many scientists believe the earth to have always been in existence (Chown, 2012). Others, however, believe the opposite; they believe in the creation of our universe. Whether one believes in a scientific development of the universe, or in a higher power of creation, there are two sides to every debate. In this paper, each side will be explained, discussed and compared and contrasted. The Big Bang Theory Many people believed at one time that the universe we know today had no beginning or an end. However, through research, the Big Bang Theory proved that the universe was not infinite. The universe has a history and most certainly a beginning (LaRocco & Rothstein, n.d.). According to many scientists, the Big Bang happened about 15 billion years ago. This event was an enormous explosion “filling all of space with all of the particles of the embryonic universe” (LaRocco &Rothstein, n.d.). However, unlike a bomb exploding fragments outward, the explosion of the universe was an explosion within itself (LaRocco & Rothstein, n.d.). “The origin for the Big Bang Theory can be credited to Edwin Hubble” (LaRocco &Rothstein, n...

Analysis Xyz Energy Management

...Case Study Essay: Big Energy Sally Johnson is a member of the management team of XYZ Energy, a major government-owned energy company. Following a high-profile corporate sales process, XYZ Energy was bought by one of its private-sector competitors, Big Energy, for a record price. XYZ Energy was successful company that had established strong, efficient and robust processes and systems to manage its business and risks. It had also innovated new processes in areas, which gave it significant competitive advantage. The company had a loyal staff with relatively low turnover. The XYZ Energy management team was well respected by employees. A large majority of staff worked hard throughout the lead up to the sale to support the process and support each other. Although morale was not high, it was better than had initially been envisaged when the sales process was announced, the staff were extremely proud of the value they had built up for the company, and it was felt that Big Energy must see significant value in the existing processes and systems of XYZ Energy, as well as in their customer base. The core business structure of both companies was similar, not surprisingly given they both operated in the same energy retailing market. For example, both companies had marketing, commercial, operational and trading department, and each one of these areas was represented on the companies’ management teams. XYZ Energy also had a strategy department, which Sally Johnson managed. At the...

...Business Performance Exercise 3 Question A 1 euro = 1.25$ 1 $ = 110 Yen * 1 euro = 100 Yen. Arbitrage? Answer: We can change 1 euro for (110*1.25) = 137.5 Yen. So we by 1 euro for 100 Yen and sell it for 137.5 Yen, by this making an arbitrage profit of 37.5 Yen. Question B Unbiased predictor means that on average the prediction would be precise, however not in 100% of the cases. I do not agree with the claim that there is no good predictor for exchange rates since today’s forward exchange rate for July 1st 2012 will be (on average) the spot exchange rate when we reach that day. Question C I think that the big max index is a fun and fast way to identify differences in PPP and estimate how much one currency ii over or underevaluated against the other. However, there are several limitations. First the Indexshould be balanced against the purchasing power\wages in each country, or in other words- against the GDP per capita. One of the problems with this index is that there are many factors that influence the PPP which differ from country to country - countries have different levels of demand for big mac, different levels of local competition, levels of taxes and duties. Thus, I think the big mac index may be sufficient between countries with similar levels of the factors mentioned above. This is why even inside US PPP doesn’t hold – we all can agree that in center of Manhattan the prices would be different than in some rural areas in Wisconsin because...
