The Blues Brothers Hero Cycle In The movie "The Blues Brothers" (1980), the main character Joliet Jake Blues travels the hero's journey along with his brother Elwood, to save the orphanage in which they grew up. They face many obstacles along this journey and receive help from many different sources. The call for the journey comes after Joliet Jake's release from prison, he had vowed to visit the mother nun at the orphanage they were raised in, and was now forced to go by his brother. Once they arrive they are soon greeted by their friend and mentor Cab Calloway an old friendly janitor from the orphanage who tells them that the bank wants to foreclose on the land. Although it is never stated it is inferred that the mother at the orphanage scared Jake with the concept of evil, and wanted to go on this journey in order to cleanse himself of this evil. This is a transformative crisis because Jake has never before been a religious man, he has never before worried about the after life. It is a sudden irrational fear which derives from the lecture which the nun gave them upon their return to the orphanage. The Threshold is overcome when the blues brothers visit the church of Reverend Cleophus James who inspires Jake and Elwood to reunite their former band, The Blues Brothers, in order to earn enough money to save the orphanage. Jake is touched by the reverends sermon he is scared into action by the idea of eternal damnation. He has an epiphany during the church's gospel number and vows to form his old band a new. This is not as easy as it sounds. Jake faces many challenges simply convincing his former band-mates to rejoin the band. This is an unknown for Jake because for the first time other musicians want nothing to do with him. Before he went to prison he was royalty among musicians, but now because he owed so much money, no one trusted him. He had never been in this position before and had do a to of reconciling in order to over come this obstacle. The abyss was directly linked to the challenge because it proved to cause Jake to overcome another challenge. The abyss was when the band could not find a paying job, this caused the major challenge of keeping the band together. Jake was forced to promise everyone large pay days in order to convince them to rejoin the band, so when no money began coming in the band got angry, and a call for a mutiny was made. The transformation occurs when Jake and Elwood are held up at a gas station waiting for a delivery of gas to come in. Because they are late once they arrive at the venue they are able to see all of the cop cars which have surrounded the perimeter, meaning there would be no escape. Seeing this and becoming a changed and righteous man, Jake marches onward to save the orphanage. The revelation occurs in the form of a business man, who offers them a record deal and enough cash to save the orphanage, and pay the band. He then informs them of a back entrance, and the light is viewable at the end of the tunnel of their journey. All they have to do is escape, go to chicago, deliver the money to the accounting firm of the city, and save the orphanage. Jakes atonement comes right after he delivers the cash for the orphanage. After running from the police for nearly the entire movie, he is able to go peace fully without a fight. He is contempt with the life he has had outside of prison, and knows the sacrifice he made and is contempt with his life. In the final scene of the movie Jake is seen playing with his band, which has been reunited in prison. They play the song "Jailhouse Rock" and are able to once again deliver the gift of beautiful music, this time to their fellow prisoners. Joliet jake Blues grows a great deal along this journey, he becomes spiritual and redeems himself and most importantly becomes satisfied with himself. After being restless and unhappy in his life before the movie, where he felt it necessary to steal more money to order to make himself happy, he learns to be contempt with what he has, and sacrifices the rest for good.

Happiest Refugee

...------------------------------------------------- Class Notes on The Happiest Refugee Chapter 1 Possibly the most prominent reason why the first chapter of Anh Do’s “The Happiest Refugee” reflects the ideas of an outsider is how war has changed Anh and his families lives. “The year is 1976 and the Vietnam war has just ended”, “When the war ended her two older brothers, high- ranking paratroopers who fought alongside American and Australian soldiers, were put into communist re-education camps” and “My grandfather was in the army, so Grandma was left to look after ten kids on her own in a little hut” explain how the war has torn Anh’s family apart and has deeply effected how his father and mother lived throughout their childhood. When Anh’s Father is forced to almost single-handedly take care of his brothers, it builds and changes his personality and makes him far more responsible. When Anh’s uncles are put into a re-education camp, Anh’s father shows the leadership qualities and courage that he built over his childhood to free them from slavery. Chapter 1. From the start of the chapter, we can see the traits of an outsider, namely being a non-evident sense of belonging. When the communist guards were harassing the young lady; she was an outsider as she was being ostracised and segregated from the rest of the group in a nasty and threatening way. This was evidenced in the text from the quote “ ‘Lift up your trousers’ the guard demands. The girl lifts her black cotton...

English Literature

...1. Literature of the 17th century. John Milton. “Paradise Lost”. John Bunyan. “Pilgrim’s Progress”. The peculiarities of the English literature of the 17th century are determined by the events of the Engl. Bourgeois Revolution, which took place in 1640-60. King Charles I was beheaded in 1649& General Oliver Cromwell became the leader of the new government. In 1660, shortly after Cro-ll’s death, the dynasty of the Stuarts was restored. The establishment of new social&eco-ic relations, the change from feudal to bourgeois ownership, escalating class-struggle, liberation movement and contradictions of the bourgeois society found their reflection in lit-re. The main representatives of this period is: John Milton: was born in London&educated at Christ’s College. He lived a pure life believing that he had a great purpose to complete. At college he was known as the The Lady of Christ’s. he Got master’s degree at Cambridge. It’s convenient to consider his works in 3 divisions. At first he wrote his short poems at Horton. (The Passion, Song on May Morning, L’Allegro). Then he wrote mainly prose. His 3 greatest poems belong to his last group. At the age of 23 he had still done little in life&he admits this in one of his sonnets. (On his 23d B-day) In his another sonnet he wrote on his own blindness. (On his Blindness) Milton wrote diff. kinds of works. His prose works were mainly concerned with church, affairs, divorce & freedom. The English civil war between Charles...

“Developing and Measuring the Performance of Portfolio Based on Risk and Return”

...INDUSTRY PROFILE Journey of Indian stock market Indian Stock Markets are one of the oldest in Asia. Its history dates back to nearly 200 years ago. The earliest records of security dealings in India are meager and obscure. The East India Company was the dominant institution in those days and business in its loan securities used to be transacted towards the close of the eighteenth century. By 1830's business on corporate stocks and shares in Bank and Cotton presses took place in Bombay. Though the trading list was broader in 1839, there were only half a dozen brokers recognized by banks and merchants during 1840 and 1850. The 1850's witnessed a rapid development of commercial enterprise and brokerage business attracted many men into the field and by 1860 the number of brokers increased into 60.In 1860-61 the American Civil War broke out and cotton supply from United States of Europe was stopped; thus, the 'Share Mania' in India begun. The number of brokers increased to about 200 to 250. However, at the end of the American Civil War, in 1865, a disastrous slump began (for example, Bank of Bombay Share which had touched Rs 2850 could only be sold at Rs. 87). At the end of the American Civil War, the brokers who thrived out of Civil War in 1874, found a place in a street (now appropriately called as Dalal Street) where they would conveniently assemble and transact business. In 1887, they formally established in Bombay, the "Native Share and Stock Brokers' Association" (which...
