The Brisbane Comedy Show

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, it is an honour to present here at the Brisbane Comedy Festival and to recognise the important role that humour plays in our society.

Humour is observed in all cultures and at all ages. It can shift the ways in which people think and can bring people together. It is innate yet also learned. It can be harmless and also incredibly damaging. For me, subtle humour is most enjoyable. The show about nothing, also known as Seinfeld is my favourite show.

Stereotypes have always been used in comedies. Stephen Amos says when comics consciously tackle controversial social issues using stereotypes, they can reach people on a more meaningful level. Amos contends that one of the singular properties of satire is the …show more content…
He feigns a thick black “rasta” accent and asks ludicrous questions such as, “how many ecstasy pills would you need to fly?”, “for real, what if your pet looks sad, could you give it an ecstasy pill?” The government advisor does not question his behaviour, he responds acceptingly and nods his head, which reveals that people in society believe racial stereotypes, even if heavily exaggerated and unrealistic. It seems the official thinks that this is typical behaviour of black people and they cannot be helped as they are intellectually inferior, primitive and prone to unlawful activities. The advisor believes that it is normal for black people to use and know the price of illicit drugs and have drug addict friends called “Dangerous Dave” and he accepts Ali’s caricature. Our society is largely compromised of white law abiding Christians and the pervasive culture is to distrust minorities and have preconceived ideas of them. It also illustrates that people in society are superficial and make judgements based solely on a person’s appearance and race. If a white business man were to act like Ali G, the government advisor would confront his actions as a joke and disbelieve the …show more content…
Being Italian, many people deem me based on the notorious Italian stereotypes in that I am habitually late and fashion conscious. The show conveys how people expect black people to act, speak and dress. Racial stereotypes are inaccurate and degrading as they ignore the humanity and uniqueness of people and so I believe they should be challenged. Stereotypes are applied to everyone, white teenage girls are always worried about calorie intake, whilst British people are pale and ridiculously polite, Australians are bronzed and sporty and blonde women are

Australian Theatre

...with the production of ‘The Recruiting Officer’ months after the first fleet Arrived in Australia. The production was comedy that had been very successful in England. In Australia it was performed in a mud hut by convicts and had an audience of around sixty people. In the intermission things such as wheat, rum, tobacco and fowls were sold, as this was all that the convicts could afford. Theatre performance gained a new perspective in Australia in 1796 when Robert Sidaway, a convict, opened the first theatre in Australia, which seated 120 people and had an admission of one shilling. This theatre was closed due to pickpocketing and burglary, however another one was opened by Sidaway in 1800 though it did not last very long either. The main focus of Australian theatre has been on bushrangers and convicts. For over a century stories of Michael Howe, who was shot and killed in Van Dieman’s land in 1818, have been the types of stories that Australian plays have been written about. The very first play in Australian theatre was written by David Burn and was entitled ‘The Bushrangers’. In 1928 it was performed in Edinburgh and Scotland and was later published and performed in Australia in 1971. The Theatre Royal is marked as the first permanent Australian theatre. It was opened in 1833 by Barnett Levey and had a seating capacity of 1000 people. It presented nearly 400 shows throughout its time, which consisted of mainly farces and melodramas, sometimes...

How Health Tv Shows Affect People's Health Attitude

...2008 Copyright # Taylor & Francis Group, LLC ISSN: 1081-0730 print/1087-0415 online DOI: 10.1080/10810730802412248 Interrupting a Narrative Transportation Experience: Program Placement Effects on Responses to Antismoking Advertising SARAH DURKIN AND MELANIE WAKEFIELD Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer, The Cancer Council Victoria, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia It is thought that ‘‘transportation’’—absorption into the narrative flow of a story— may play a role in influencing resistance to persuasion. We hypothesized that advertising that disrupts the experience of narrative transportation may be adversely appraised by audiences. This study aimed to explore the influence of two types of television programs: narratives (dramas, comedies, and soap operas) versus nonnarratives (light entertainment, sports, documentaries, and news), on smokers’ reactions to antismoking advertisements. In preexposure interviews, daily smokers (n ¼ 779) were asked to watch a particular television program they usually watched. Postexposure interviews were conducted within 3 days of exposure. Results indicated that placing an antismoking ad within a program in which the viewer is focused on the narrative flow of a story may lead to reduced immediate cognitive and emotional impact of the ad and reduced intentions to quit, especially among those for whom the ad is most relevant, such as those preparing to quit smoking. Placing antismoking advertising in light entertainment, sports, documentaries...

Mary and Max

...Mary and Max It is 1976, an 8-year-old Mary Daisy Dinkle (Bethany Whitmore) is a lonely little girl living in Mount Waverley, Melbourne, Australia. Her relatively poor family cannot afford to buy her toys or nice clothing, and she is teased by children at her school due to an unfortunate birthmark on her forehead. Her father is distant and her alcoholic, kleptomaniac mother provides no support. The closest thing she has to a friend is the man for whom Mary collects mail, Len Hislop, a World War II veteran who lost his legs as a prisoner of war and has developed agoraphobia. One day, she decides to write a letter to someone living in New York City: by pure chance she chooses Max Jerry Horowitz (Philip Seymour Hoffman) from a telephone directory. Max turns out to be a morbidly obese 44-year-old whose various mental problems (including anxiety attacks and overeating) have left him unable to form close bonds with other people. Max decides to write back to Mary, and the two become friends. Over time, Mary's increasingly sensitive questions about the adult world give Max progressively worse anxiety attacks, and he is ultimately institutionalized. During his time there, Max is diagnosed with depression and Asperger syndrome. Now aware of why he has difficulty relating to other people, Max finds a new lease on life and resumes his correspondence with Mary. The two remain friends for the next two decades, keeping one another updated on various events in their lives. Mary (Toni Colette)...

Benefits of Customer Service

...Introduction HOW SHOULD YOU INTERPRET YOUR SCORES? In the Answer key at the end of the each set of Listening and Reading answers you will find a chart which will help you assess if, on the basis of your practice test results, you are ready to take the IELTS exam. In interpreting your score, there are a number of points you should bear in mind. Your performance in the real IELTS test will be reported in two ways: there will be a Band Score from 1 to 9 for each of the modules and an Overall Band Score from 1 to 9, which is the average of your scores in the four modules. However, institutions considering your application are advised to look at both the Overall Band and the Bands for each module. They do this in order to see if you have the language skills needed for a particular course of study. For example, if your course has a lot of reading and writing, but no lectures, listening comprehension might be less important and a score of 5 in Listening might be acceptable if the Overall Band Score was 7. However, for a course where there are lots of lectures and spoken instructions, a score of 5 in Listening might be unacceptable even though the Overall Band Score was 7. Once you have marked your papers you should have some idea of whether your Listening and Reading skills are good enough for you to try the real IELTS test. If you did well enough in one module but not in others, you will have to decide for yourself whether you are ready to take the proper test yet...
