The Checkouts: A Love Story

I relate to The Checkouts. I think I relate to this story because one of my closest friends experienced this and I heard it many times. She went to college and never came back. I haven’t heard from her since. This story made me remember her because she fell in love with him without even talking to him. Just like the girl in the story did. “Then one day the bag boy dropped her jar of mayonnaise and that is how she fell in love.” Although she never talked to him, she still liked him and she said she would always look for him every time she went to get gas for her car, but he was never there. She told me she crossed paths with him again at the ice arena when he was on another date. Of course, my friend was upset that he was with a new …show more content…
It all started when she moved here. She told me she didn’t want to move, but her parents didn’t care. They said they were moving because of a job oppurtunity, end of story. This is similar to the girl in the story who was forced to move to Cincinnati. “Her parents had moved her to Cincinnati, to a large house with beveled glass windows and several porches and the history her mother liked to emphasize. You’ll love the house, they said. You’ll be lonely at first, they admitted, but your so nice you’ll make friends fast. And as an impulse tore at her to lie on the floor, to hold to their ankles and tell them she felt she was dying, to offer anything, anything at all, so they might allow her to finish growing up in the town of her childhood, they formed their mouths and spoke from their chests and they said, It’s decided.” My friend moved to here for a temporary job movement. We became pretty good friends. She is older than …show more content…
This is similar to when the girl, who loved to grocery shop, went into the bag boy’s checkout lane. “He was nervous--first day on the job--and along had come this fascinating girl, standing in the checkout line with the unfocused stare one often sees in young children, her face turned enough away that he might take several full looks at her as he packed sturdy bags full of food and the goods of modern life.” When the car left, my friend, Jill, pulled into the spot and told the gas attendant she wanted to pay twenty dollars. He stared at her for a while and eventually said a weak, “okay.” Jill looked at his name tag. His name was Brian. He started to fill her car with gas and clean her windows as she asked for it. When he was finished, he pulled the pump handle out and gave her a wink as she began to laugh. He eventually realized that the gas was coming out and spilled on the concrete and his shoes. He felt so embarrassed. This is similar to when the bag boy was

The Girl Who Can Analysis

...Who Can we saw a young girl who was criticized by her grandmother excell forward in life with flying colors. On a completely different hand Checkouts was about a young woman whose parents moved her out to Cincinnati against her will. She soon fell in love with a boy she saw at the grocery store, but they never spoke and their love was given up on. These two texts are as distant from each other as the Sun is from Pluto, yet the voice in these texts can be well related. The voice that is expressed through these texts can be identified effortlessly. In Checkouts the voice is that of just the narrator. The narrator doesn’t speak ing deadpan; neither in monotone, but in this sort of lulling voice that is slightly dull. The love story in Checkouts is one of the lamest love stories out there. There is really no true reason this text should have been written, spare for the fact that it displays that sometimes love blossoms then dies and rots. The voice in The Girl Who Can was a stronger voice and more identifiable because the text was in first person perspective. The...

The Fall of Iraq

...that comes from being forced to kill parts of themselves in order to do what combat demanded they do. Men who stared death in the face day after day, deployment after deployment, who made decisions that can’t be undone. Men who died inside themselves to keep their brothers alive and must live with the fact that they couldn’t save everyone. Men who were good at what they did. And did the best they could. If you’re reading this, you most likely are one of these men. You know what I’m talking about.
The world doesn’t see the man you were in combat. They have no idea they are in the presence of some of the highest caliber and highest tested human beings on earth. They see PTSD, and stumble over a “mental illness”. They see the guy working checkout at Walmart with a little pin that says “proud to be a veteran” and scowl at him for taking too long to move their groceries past a scanner. They see an overweight guy with a beard at the bar who doesn’t look like he has it all together and dismiss him without a second thought. They see a thin wiry guy who works in the cubicle next door and keeps to himself and think he’s socially awkward. They see… absolutely nothing. They don’t see you. The real you. The man you are. The one you became in those streets and houses and rooftops, the orchards and roads. The man you still are. The...

Mown Fear

...To lose someone you love is a fear we all try to hide deep down in our minds. What would you do if you lost someone you loved and had known in years? It is for most people quite a task to get back on track after losing a lover. Some people can get back to their normal life easily, where others can be stuck with their loss and will need some extra help to continue their lives. Especially for Annie, in the short story “Half-mown Lawn” by Dan Powell, where she has a hard time getting back on track, after her husband passed away. In the opening lines, you get the feeling of emptiness and loneliness. It appears that the grandma, Annie, is in deep mourning after losing her husband. It is a major loss for her and she keeps thinking about him, Annie will not let him go even though it has already happened, she still tries to regret the accident (p.62, l.9-19 and p.65, l.21-26). Not only has she lost her husband, but the half of herself. Life has already become more of a struggle for her. (p.63, l.4-12) Here Annie forgets her purse, which suggests that she struggles with simple things in life. When Annie tells the checkout girl: “I don’t know what to do either” (p.63, l.11), Annie is actually talking about her whole life, and she really does not know what to do with her...

This Is Water

...This is Water David Foster Wa!ace There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and “Morning, boys, how's the water?” And the two young fish swim on bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and “What the hell is water?” meet says, for a goes, If at this moment, you're worried that I plan to present myself here as the wise old fish explaining what water is to you younger fish, please don't be. I am not the wise old fish. The immediate point of the fish story is that the most obvious, ubiquitous, important realities are often the ones that are the hardest to see and talk about. Stated as an English sentence, of course, this is just a banal platitude — but the fact is that, in the day-to-day trenches of adult existence, banal platitudes can have life-or-death importance. That may sound like hyperbole, or abstract nonsense. 1 A huge percentage of the stuff that I tend to be automatically certain of is, it turns out, totally wrong and deluded. Here's one example of the utter wrongness of something I tend to be automatically sure of: Everything in my own immediate experience supports my deep belief that I am the absolute center of the universe, the realest, most vivid and important person in existence. We rarely talk about this sort of natural, basic selfcenteredness, because it's so socially repulsive, but it's pretty much the same for all of us, deep down. It is our default-setting, hard-wired...

Wal-Mart’s E-Commerce Success

...Wal-Mart’s E-Commerce Success Possibly the single greatest success story of e-business and B2B implementation is that of the rise to dominance by Wal-Mart in the North American retail market. Love them or hate them, you have to hand it to Wal-Mart for their impressive growth in such a short time span. And arguably the single most important factor in this rise was their harnessing of the power of e-business, e-procurement, and the adjustment of internal processes to maximize this advantage. So, why does Wal-Mart think e-business is important? Wal-Mart's focus on its e-commerce strategy not only allows the retailer to reach customers who don't have stores nearby, but, more importantly, the online customer is a significantly better customer than one that only shops at a store. “Wal-Mart believes eCommerce Brings Access to Customers Anytime, Anywhere (eCommerce 1)”. As customers not only do we expect to have great prices; we have grown to consumers who want products anytime no matter where we are.   Can Wal-Mart successfully adapt their model online to challenge Amazon? While Wal-Mart’s total revenue is projected to be over five times greater than Amazon’s, the e-commerce return for Amazon’s all revenue is over seven times greater than Wal-Mart’s e-commerce revenue. Wal-Mart has gone as far as establishing Wal-Mart labs in California in order to prepare to challenge the online retail king, Amazon. These labs are designed to primarily compete against tech companies by taking...

Literary Analysis

...Nieman ENG 102 30 March 2016 Literary Analysis: The One Who Walked Away from Omelas As you read the story and imagine as you go the first image that may pop into your mind is the Indian culture or something of that sort. Everything about the festival, the dancing, the clothing, the flags, the music, the laughter, the activities all together may indicate and assure that the city of Omelas was a complete happy place filled with people who love to have a great time. But all of this happiness comes with a price, but to whose expense? The city of Omelas portrays happiness and perfection. but someone is suffering in order for the city to pursue happiness. Who has to pay the price? Through symbolism and imagery Ursula Le Guin reveals unhappiness behind closed doors and childhood innocence through the suffering ciao not only being exposed to the evils of the world but being the target in recipient of evil. Are the people of Omelas really happy? When the narrator tells the story he or she compares the story two things we think. "Omelas sounds in my words like a city in a fairytale, long ago and far away, once upon a time"(2). This is the type of imagery Le Guin uses to reveal unhappiness. Anybody who gains from another suffering is clearly said. These people are said and are using the suffering of a chow to be delivered from unhappiness and this is how they live their lives. This story can make you believe it is true because there are really people like this in our world. "Happiness is...

Ikea

...Cases A 477 IKEA in 2013: Furniture Retailer to the World ~ INTRODUCTION IKEA is one of the world's most successful global retailers. By 2012 IKEA had 320 home-furnishing superstores in 40 countries and was visited by some 776 million shoppers. IKEA's low-priced, elegantly designed merchandise, displayed in large warehouse stores, generated sales of €27.5 billion in 2012, up from €4.4 billion in 1994, and €4.2 billion in net profit. Although the privately held company refuses to publish detailed financial data, its net profit margins were rumored to be around 10 percent, high for a retailer. The founder, Ingvar Kamprad, now in his 80s but still an active "adviser" to the company, is rumored to be one of the world's richest men. COMPANY BACKGROUND IKEA was established by Ingvar Kamprad in Sweden in 1943 when he was 17 years old. The fledgling company sold fish, Christmas magazines, and seeds from his family farm. It wasn't his first business- that had been selling matches, which the enterprising Kamprad had purchased wholesale in 100-box lots (with help from his grandmother who financed the enterprise) and then resold them individually at a higher markup. The name IKEA is an acronym, I and K being his initials, while E stood for Elmtaryd, the name of the family farm, and A stood for Agunnaryd, the name of the village in southern Sweden where the farm was located. Before long Kamprad had added ballpoint pens to his list and was selling his...

Computers run the world! Wouldn’t you agree? Think about it, imagine going an entire twenty four hours without turning to your electronics for help, you can’t. Our generation has been spoiled with using the “easy, fast way out”. Remember that time the cashier was moving too slow when you were in a hurry, thank goodness for that self-checkout. How many times do you go to the supermarket and prefer to deal with the machine versus the nice cashier lady who greets you with a smile and small conversation? Most people in this generation prefer to deal with machines and not people and it is becoming a problem in society. Advancements in technology are doing more harm than good The problem is the advancement in technology is destroying and eliminating job opportunities for mankind. When people visit their local grocery store you can see that machines have replaced cashiers and even outperforming mankind. The rich are becoming richer and the poor becoming poorer. Robots are cheaper and they execute factory jobs better than humans. In an article from The Desert Sun, The Boston Consulting...

Some business decisions BestBuy had to make was how many iPhones to order. Don’t want to order too little and lose business. With apple products I have learned you can’t over stock your inventory. APPLE sells itself! Remember it like it was yesterday. We opened the store 2 hours early thinking the place was going to be rocking. We had three Verizon reps and 5 best buy mobile employees. Long story short it was not busy at all and we ended up losing money as a company due to the fact of opening store 2 hours earlier and staffing all of those people. I have learned that business decisions in the future are a big key to success. Before making the schedule for the week ahead my manager looks at previous data and graphs to guide him. He...

It's a picture of our role as believers in Christ, and God's providence to his believers though a savior. • In chapter three, we see Boaz marrying Ruth and saving her from her suffering, and it's a beautiful picture of how Christ rescues His people from sin.
