The Coca-Cola Company is a multinational company and is one of the biggest manufacturer, distributor and marketer of non-alcoholic beverages in the world. The company operates in more than 200 countries and offers more than 500 brands. Coca-Cola was established in 1886 when an Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton started to produce Coca-Cola syrup for soft drink that could be sold at soda fountains. In 1891 the business was sold with its secret formula for coke syrup to Asa Candler, who improved the original formula by removing the cocaine and dominated the market of carbonated soft drinks. In 1889 the company only produced syrup concentrate which was then sold to various bottlers throughout the world. The Coca-Cola Company is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia (coca-colacompany.com, 2014).
Coca-Cola’s marketing and financial success was ran by bureaucrats who tried to create an image of their brand more than to give to customers what they wanted. M. Douglas Ivester, who was the CEO of the company in 1997, was focusing more on the numbers and revenues than on what was really going inside the company. He was described as arrogant and insecure. In an attempt to boost profits he increased the price for Coke syrup sales to bottlers. At the time the company was going through one of the largest product recall in their history. The company was also faced with a lawsuit accusing Coca-Cola of discrimination against black employees in promotions, evaluations, terminations, and pay. He ignored the complaints of his employees and he tried to prevent the outcomes of the lawsuit more than to solve the problem. This stage of the case is unfreezing.
