The consequence of being Claire Tiller

First she stared at it with a puzzled look and then she looked angrily at Claire. She didn't say a single word for 3 hours. She couldn't understand what was going on in her daughters head. Then after the 3 hours she looked at her daughter, and then began to yell at her. She had never ever in her entire life been so mad, irritated and disappointed. She didn't give Claire a chance to explain, why she did what she did, before she began to yell again. Claire's mother then stopped yelling and looked directly at Claire, and then told her, that if she didn't pulled herself together, she wouldn't take care of her anymore, and then sent her to her father. Claire looked at her mother, and then said, that nobody understood her, and that she did not care if she was sent to her father. Claire's mother then said to Claire that she just could pack her stuff, because she was tired of her keep getting in trouble. Claire didn't answer her mother, she just ran up to her room, were she packed her stuff, and moved to her father's place.

Claire took her clothes off one morning in the school assembly. As weird as it sounds, Claire had a reason for doing it. Claire needed attention, though she didn't admit it towards the Head, she needed it. We know that because of her character trait, for example when the bus came, she chooses to hurry on to the bus and sits by herself("She sat on the top deck by herself"(page 3, line 1)). That indicate that she is a bit lonely, and this may explain her behavior at school, to get attention.
Claire could also have another reason to take off all of her clothes in the school assembly. She maybe feel that she's being abandoned by her mother, and therefore she tries to get her mother's attention by doing something stupid. This way the Head would write a letter to her mother, and this way she gets her mother's attention.
Claire maybe feels abandoned by her mother because her mother is always busy with her job and her boyfriend. Even though the mother works part-time as a dentist's receptionist, and that she had flexible hours, she plans her work, so she can be with her boyfriend Stan in the afternoon.
So Claire was forgotten by the mother. And when you get neglected at that age, and especially when you get neglected by your mother, it's difficult to live like a normal teenager. It's hard to live up to all the expectations that meet you, and you don't really know how to act or how to behave.

Claire Tiller is a fifteen and a half year old girl. She is a victim of neglect in her relationship with her mother. Claire is a sensitive girl, who need some kind of adult-attention, and especially some attention from her mother. Claire does not actually have some friends she can talk with about her feelings or her problems("Are you still going around with Liz Raymond?".. "Mostly" said Claire. "And Stephanie"(page 2, lines 68-70)). Claire is consequently lonely, and her answer when the Head asks her girlfriends isn't that convincing.
Claire's behavior is a result of neglect at a high level, caused by the mother.
Claire's mother isn't the perfect mother, and she behaves childishly, when she chooses herself instead of the daughter. Even though the mother maybe has not realized what her daughter is going through and how her daughter feels, she could at least maybe ask her about her day, or how she's doing, instead of always asking about if there is any news(“Hi!” she said. “Any news?” which was what she said most days."(page 3, lines 101-102)).
The relationship isn't the best, and it isn't only the mother's fault, but a big part of it is the mother's responsibility. Claire should take more risks and maybe talk with the mother, and tell her what she's feeling. But again she can't, because of the way the mother has treated her. The mother should spend more time with Claire and be truly interested.

We can conclude that Claire's behavior is a result of how her mother has treated her, and that Claire's feelings are locked up inside of her, and therefore she does not know how to open up, because she has no one to talk with about her feelings. All this is a result of a lot of neglect and a lack of attention.

Dear Mrs. Tiller

Yesterday your daughter chose to take off her clothes in the school assembly.
We can't allow that kind of behavior, and therefore we would like you to have a talk with your daughter Claire.
Not only has she behaved disrespectfully, she also seems to be very distant and she is also very awkward when it comes to being social with the others from the form. She seems to have no kind of confidence, and therefore she is usually alone.
We will not only ask you to talk with her about her behavior yesterday, but also we think that it might be a good idea, to talk with her about her thoughts and feelings.
And eventually she might gain some confidence.
