After the death of King Aethelfrith, King Edwin seized the Northumbrian Kingdom. Edwin obtained great power and “had a wider authority extending over all the peoples of Britain” which was “an achievement unmatched by any previous English king.” (Campbell,54) (Bede,118). Before Edwins reign, all the Northumbrian Kings had been Pagan, including Edwin initially. Edwin had considered his own conversion to the Christian faith because of his alliance with the Kingdom of Kent. It wasn't until his marriage to Princess Ethelburga of Kent that he truly considered converting to Christianity. Edwin was baptized by Paulinis and thus became converted to the Christian faith, which he later spread to the people of Northumbria. Evidence of Edwin's introduction of Christianity to Northumbria occurs when he convinces King Earpwald, son of Redwals, King of East Angles to accept Faith and Christ. Oswald provided his complete faith in Christ by spreading the word of the Lord to his people. By doing so he proved himself to be "the most Christian King of the Northumbrians" (Bede,157). King Oswald possessed good christian morals which made him such an influential leader to his people.
