The story takes place in Mississippi in a rural environment, about 70 years ago (the 1940’s). The dialect of the speakers reveals the environment”Svamp-buck got away from, the chain gang yes-tidy (P.4, Line 32)”, and the fact that it is “normal” to shoot a black person, tells us that it is not happening in modern times. Tommy goes hunting in the woods, which is where the action starts. Later it moves on to the bar, where his father is telling his friends about, how brave his son was. In the beginning his father describes the forest particular, the beautiful colors, fresh stream etc. When Tommy is standing there, ready to kill, it is like everything is described in details, and I think it is because it is an important place in the text. The weather and environment reflects to the characters feelings. The sun is shining, when Tommy is waiting the woods, but when he is about to shoot the black man, the sun gets duller and there is a dead silence. I think it is probably because he is scared and nervous. In the end when they are all sitting in the bar, and Tommy is happy, because he is finally one of them, the Mississippi sunshine is mentioned

Characters
The first persons we are introduced to, is Tommy Grimes and his father Tom. Tommy is a white boy, and I think he is probably 12 years old “Soon they would be calling him Tim Grimes like his father (P.3, Line 6-7)”. It seems like Tommy has a beautiful point of view on life, but his father “brainwashes” him. He wants to grow up and become a real man, just like his father, so he can hang out with him and his friends at the bar. I do not think that he enjoys killing, but it is a duty. After he kills the black person, a part of him dies, like his father told him. He does not think it is that bad. Tommy’s father Tom Grimes is white too with blue eyes and dark blonde hair. It sounds like he is often at the bar

...this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are...

Why the conventional wisdom is so often wrong . . . How “experts”— from criminologists to real-estate agents to political scientists—bend the facts . . . Why knowing what to measure, and how to measure it, is the key to understanding modern life . . . What is “freakonomics,” anyway? 1. What Do Schoolteachers and Sumo Wrestlers Have in Common? 15 In which we explore the beauty of incentives, as well as their dark side—cheating. Contents Who cheats? Just about everyone . . . How cheaters cheat, and how to catch them . . . Stories from an Israeli day-care center . . . The sudden disappearance of seven million American children . . . Why We Broke Up

...Begin Reading Table of Contents Copyright Page For Charlotte—why we got together —D.H. + M.K. In a sec you’ll hear a thunk. At your front door, the one nobody uses. It’ll rattle the hinges a bit when it lands, because it’s so weighty and important, a little jangle along with the thunk, and Joan will look up from whatever she’s cooking. She will look down in her saucepan, worried that if she goes to see what it is it’ll boil over. I can see her frown in the reflection of the bubbly sauce or whatnot. But she’ll go, she’ll go and see. You won’t, Ed. You wouldn’t. You’re upstairs probably, sweaty and alone. You should be taking a shower, but you’re heartbroken on the bed, I hope, so it’s your sister, Joan, who will open the door even though the thunk’s for you. You won’t even know or hear what’s being dumped at your door. You won’t even know why it even happened. It’s a beautiful day, sunny and whatnot. The sort of day when you think everything will be all right, etc. Not the right day for this, not for us, who went out when it rains, from October 5 until November 12. But it’s December now, and the sky is bright, and it’s clear to me. I’m telling you why we broke up, Ed. I’m writing it in this letter, the whole truth of why it happened. And the truth is that I goddamn loved you so much. The thunk is the box, Ed. This is what I am leaving you. I found it down in the basement, just grabbed the box when all of our things were too much for my bed stand drawer. Plus I thought...
