Mathias Aagaard Christensen 1.U Roskilde katedralskole B The Death of Tommy Grimes The text “The Death of Tommy Grimes” is about the eleven-twelve year old boy Tommy and his father. The story starts of in medias res where we hear about Tommy later in the story, and we get no introduction here. We get the introduction few sentences later in a flashback, where we hear about Tommy’s father trying to instruct Tommy in his shooting skill, but at this moment Tommy just can not pull the trigger. Tommy starts practicing his increasing shooting ability while his father teaches him about hunting, and how the nature cycle, in a metaphorical way, works on earth. In the end of the story, Tommy and his father go hunting, and Tommy ends up shooting a black man – something which makes his father awfully proud, and in the very end he boasts about it in the local bar saying the words, “my boy became a man today”

The character Tommy is the protagonist in the story, and he lives in a small village with his father and the other inhabitants. From the descriptions in the text, it sounds like the environment Tommy lives in is very stuffy without any significant contact to the outside world. This is also why Tommy’s father has an enormous influence on him, including the fact that he probably does not know anything else, than what his father tells him. This draw the conclusion, that Tommy is completely dependent on his father, because he is the only source to knowledge about the world. During the action of the story, Tommy goes through a dramatic development and change. In the beginning Tommy is an insecure, innocent boy without the nerve to meet his father’s unreasonable aim; killing something. But as time passes, his father gets more control over Tommy’s mind, and he ends up completing his fathers aim; shooting the nigger (referring to the choice of word in the text). This action is an...

The Death of Tommy Grimes

The Death of Tommy Grimes

...Tommy Grimes: Tommy is a 12 year old boy, who lives somewhere in the U.S.A with both his parents (probably in Mississippi, line 8 page 45). The whole story is taking place in a time before the civil war (before 1861). Hunting plays a vital role in the community Tommy lives in. Despite his father, “the boys” and the rest of the society, Tommy doesn’t like killing. (I can tell from line 6-15 on page 39). Tommy’s father is aware of that (as seen on line 19-20 page 39) and obviously he gets a little embarrassed when the other men bragged about their boys being good hunters (seen on line 26-28 page 40). Tommy realizes that, and in order to fit in, and be a part of the community (consisting of his father, “the boys” and all the other hunters in the village) he needs to accept the fact “that some varmints do damage and just plain got to be killed”. Tommy wants to make his father proud, so he eagerly starts practicing shooting with the rifle. After a while, Tommy is ready to see if he is able to make his first kill. He goes out buck hunting with his father. He managed to kill a runaway-slave with a shot that pierced right through the heart of the slave. – This is even better than killing a predator, and the above-mentioned situation results, that Tommy finally gets accepted as a man. Even though Tommy wasn’t quite happy about killing the slave, he is overwhelmed with...

The Death of Tommy Grimes Essay

...modern times. Tommy goes hunting in the woods, which is where the action starts. Later it moves on to the bar, where his father is telling his friends about, how brave his son was. In the beginning his father describes the forest particular, the beautiful colors, fresh stream etc. When Tommy is standing there, ready to kill, it is like everything is described in details, and I think it is because it is an important place in the text. The weather and environment reflects to the characters feelings. The sun is shining, when Tommy is waiting the woods, but when he is about to shoot the black man, the sun gets duller and there is a dead silence. I think it is probably because he is scared and nervous. In the end when they are all sitting in the bar, and Tommy is happy, because he is finally one of them, the Mississippi sunshine is mentioned Characters The first persons we are introduced to, is Tommy Grimes and his father Tom. Tommy is a white boy, and I think he is probably 12 years old “Soon they would be calling him Tim Grimes like his father (P.3, Line 6-7)”. It seems like Tommy has a beautiful point of view on life, but his father “brainwashes” him. He wants to grow up and become a real man, just like his father, so he can hang out with him and his friends at the bar. I do not think that he enjoys killing, but it is a duty. After he kills the black person, a part of him dies, like his father told him. He does not think it is that bad. Tommy’s father Tom Grimes is white......

Dubliners

...Dubliners Joyce, James Published: 1914 1 About Joyce: James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (Irish Séamus Seoighe; 2 February 1882 – 13 January 1941) was an Irish expatriate writer, widely considered to be one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. He is best known for his landmark novels Ulysses (1922) and Finnegans Wake (1939), the short story collection Dubliners (1914) and the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). Although his adult life was largely spent outside the country, Joyce's fictional universe is firmly rooted in Dublin and provide the settings and much of the subject matter for all his fiction. In particular, his tempestuous early relationship with the Irish Roman Catholic Church is reflected through a similar inner conflict in his recurrent alter ego Stephen Dedalus. As the result of his minute attentiveness to a personal locale and his self-imposed exile and influence throughout Europe, Joyce became simultaneously one of the most cosmopolitan and one of the most local of all the great English language writers. Source: Wikipedia 2 Chapter 1 The Sisters There was no hope for him this time: it was the third stroke. Night after night I had passed the house (it was vacation time) and studied the lighted square of window: and night after night I had found it lighted in the same way, faintly and evenly.
