The Underestimated Importance of Luck in Crime Solving Detective fiction is a branch of crime fiction that centers upon the investigation of a crime, usually murder, by a detective. It is the most popular form of hardboiled crime fiction and mystery fiction. In the story, the detective uses reasoning to piece together various clues left behind by the perpetrator to form a coherent story of how the murder took place. It is even written down as rules that “the culprit must be determined by logical deductions” and “the means of detecting it (the murder), must be rational and scientific” (Van Dine, 1928). Through the years, three major forms of reasoning have been frequently used to solve the cases- deductive, inductive and abductive. Although these three methods vary in terms of uncertainty involved, a common intuition that can be inferred about gaining knowledge from the rules is that knowledge is true belief that has been acquired in a non-accidental or non-lucky fashion. However, I will be drawing on specifically three types of luck- evidential epistemic luck, content epistemic luck and pure luck, and how luck is often underestimated as a contributing factor towards solving crimes along with reasoning. The first type of luck I will be discussing is evidential epistemic luck, where the detective is lucky to be able to possess certain knowledge in the first place (Pritchard, 2005). The animated series “Detective Conan” follows the adventures of Kudo Shinichi, a teenage detective prodigy who was inadvertently shrunk into a child’s body after he was forced to ingest poison fed by members of a criminal syndicate. He took the name Edogawa Conan to hide his true identity and goes to live with his childhood friend Mouri Ran and her father, Mouri Kogoro, and tries to use Kogoro’s running albeit failing detective agency as an avenue to find out the truth of the

Detective Career Paper

...Detective I have always loved mysteries and solving them, so naturally, I would want to become a detective or criminal investigator, a job that is about solving mysteries. Before, I did not know for sure that I wanted to be a detective, but a single piece of fiction from Stephen King named “Mr. Mercedes” set it in stone that being a detective is what I want to be. I want to understand the specific pathway to reach the career I want and the specifics on what the job entails through this research paper. Early on in America’s history, detectives did not exist. This is because the colonists would have been suspicious that the government was spying on them, which could cause trouble. Therefore, if someone wanted justice for a crime, they...

New York City Police Department's Homicide Case Study

...officers, detectives and subject matter experts in the world. The NYPD however, could never do it alone, no Department could. It is the collaborative efforts and robust skill set of the investigating detectives, crime scene technicians, forensic pathologists, criminalists, medical examiners, and prosecutors who are critical in solving homicide cases. Recently, I attended the New York City Police Department’s Homicide Course which was hosted at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York City. This course was presented by an esteemed panel of subject matter experts who discussed the important aspects of a homicide investigation and explain how forensic science was a resource tool used to assist investigators. At this course, crime scene photos were displayed and the attendees were walked through several homicide cases. In this paper I will discuss the investigative techniques used on two homicide cases and explain how forensic science was instrumental in assisting the investigating detectives in solving those cases....

Social Problem

...Minds and NCIS Los Angeles. For Law and Order, I watched season 12, episode 23. It had aired on April 20 2011. Its duration time was an hour. Criminal Minds, I watched season 8, episode 11; it had aired on December 12 2012. It duration time was 42 minutes. Lastly NCIS was season 4, episode 9 and that aired on December 11 2012. Its duration time was an hour also. When watching this shows, I noticed that there was at least one woman playing a lead character, whether she was victim or one of the detectives who were trying to solve the crime committed. However Law and Order SVU was the only show I observed that had a juvenile delinquent playing one of the lead characters. In the Law and Order SVU, the teenage boy was found naked asleep in a woman’s bed apparently waiting for her return so that he can rape and kill her. When taken into custody, they find out that this wasn’t his first homicide; in fact this delinquent has been raping and killing women prior to this event. As the detectives dig deeper, they discover that the teenage boy was molested when he was younger by his babysitter. They were several women portrayed as victims in this episode and none were offenders. The offender was a juvenile but no victims were juveniles Then there was Criminal Minds, in this episode the FBI agents head south to investigate a fast moving criminal who is trying to replicate another serial killer from 30 years ago. Most of the criminal’s victims were women only one was a man and his last...

The Emotions of Us

...The Emotions of Us Team B August 5, 2014 University of Phoenix PSY/355 One very popular method for uncovering basic emotions is through facial expressions. From the moment we are born we demonstrate emotion through facial expressions. In babies, it is very important that they are able to demonstrate their feelings through facial expressions. There are many different kinds of emotions that every human being experiences during certain situations. Some emotions would be anger, sadness, fear, happiness, love, surprise, anxiety, amongst many others. Facial expressions make it very simple to be able to notice what kind of emotion the individual is going through. Babies are unable to communicate by speech or bodily gestures when they are born or in their first years of life, therefore it is very important for people to be able to associate the baby’s facial expression to their emotion. When a baby is sad they will make a certain facial expression letting the parents know something is wrong. Same goes if the baby was in pain, hungry, or tired. Because kids and adults are able to speak and communicate both through speech and body language, it might make it seem as if facial expressions were no longer needed to know how someone is feeling, but in research it is still very important. For example, a doctor would be able to tell if his patient is in pain or afraid even if they do not want to let the doctor know something is wrong just by the patient’s facial expression. Social workers...
