Essay Question 3

In a human’s life, it takes a great amount of wisdom and diligence to become successful. Thus, those who are lazy and foolish will have little chance of climbing to the top. Subsequently, one cannot help but wonder what the difference between diligence and laziness is, as well as between wisdom and folly, and the book of Proverbs is one that offers explanations to such a question.
First, it is important that people comprehend the difference between diligence and laziness as stated in Proverbs. While being diligent means being prepared, and on top of things, a lazy person is one who often put off work that can be done today until tomorrow. In Proverbs, these two characteristics are often mentioned. Proverbs 6:6-11 comments that:
Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man (NIV).

The book describes a lazy person as a “sluggard” who stays in one place. Moreover, a sluggard has to be made to get out of bed to be of any productivity. Unlike the ant that is productive and diligent, a sluggard will not gain anything.
Next, the relationship between wisdom and folly must also be taken into account. Wisdom is the definition of having a lot of experiences, and knowledge in life. In The Essence of the Old Testament, Ed Hindson and Gary Yates praise wisdom in every ways (265). Opposite of wisdom is folly, which is a character of someone who understands what is best for him or her but chooses the foolish route. Similar to the difference between diligence and laziness, both wisdom and folly are illustrated in the book of Proverbs. Proverbs 3:35 states that “The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools” (NIV). An example of this is when a student has exams coming up. Instead of studying early to prepare for the tests, he or she just procrastinates until the last minutes. Such a choice will bring misfortunes to the student, as the test results will not be as good as other students. Moreover, since most students have a habit of comparing themselves to others, it is possibly unavoidable that the student who did badly in the test will experience embarrassment and shamefulness.
In life, there are many occasions where these four personalities are displayed. A realistic application of these four characteristics is when people dream. There are two types of dreams; the first type occurs when people are sound asleep; the second is a person’s future desire. Dreams are good but they could have negative effect. To be more precise, to a sluggard, a dream can be dangerous, as he or she does not do anything to realize the dream. This is as stated in Proverbs 21:25, “The craving of a sluggard will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work” (NIV). Hence, in term of dreams, the ant’s diligence and wisdom will take it to a glorious path while the sluggard’s follies and laziness will result in failures.
It is beneficial to understand that the author of Proverbs, Solomon, is hailed as the wisest man ever lived. He put forward examples concerning the characteristics. Solomon teaches that laziness will result in serious consequences. He uses words such as poverty (6:6-11), shameful (10:5), and lacks sense (12:11) when describing a lazy person. Moreover, human society typically makes lazy people feel ashamed as those people often make shameful choices in life. Solomon also alludes to people who are abundantly supplied when speaking about diligence in Proverbs 12:11, “Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense” (NIV). Since Solomon, the wisest man, teaches that diligence is vital, it is safe to say wisdom and diligence go together in order to reach successes.
In conclusion, the book of Proverbs has given mankind an extensive look into the relationships between diligence and laziness, and between wisdom and folly. The contrast between the first two characteristics is as crystal-clear as smart choices resulting in benefits while idleness, nothing. Thus, people of Christianity should uphold the lessons taught in Proverbs, as those lessons are God’s words.

...Essay Question #3: Describe the teachings of Hebrew wisdom on diligence and laziness. How does this correspond with the contrast between wisdom and folly? Include Scripture references and quotations as appropriate. I. A Summary of what Hebrew Wisdom Teaches about Diligence and Laziness. The dictionary defines diligence as “careful and persistent work or effort” and laziness as “the quality of being unwilling to work or use energy”. By these definitions we can see that diligence and laziness are the exact opposite of each other. “The eagerly sought after trait of diligence is often addressed within the book of Proverbs. Laziness – diligence’s lethargic antonym – is likewise frequently mentioned due to the severity of its consequences. Solomon illustrated both diligence and laziness in a unique way that emphasized key concepts such as personal discipline, integrity, and wisdom.” (Heart of the Wolph, 2014) Throughout all the proverbs we learn that lazy behavior results in poverty, while diligence results in wealth(Hindson, Yates 2012). In other words, diligence is rewarded, laziness is punished. We get this idea reiterated over and over again throughout the Bible. In Proverbs 21:5 “The plans of the diligent lead surely to advantage, But everyone who is hasty comes surely to poverty”. And again in Proverbs 10:4 “Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, But the hand of the diligent makes rich.” I could go on, but I think we get the idea. When...

Throughout the book of Proverbs the words of lazy and diligence can be found in many different forms. Sluggish, sluggard, and idle describe laziness. The word diligence can also be considered as, thorough, attentive, and persistence. Each of these words, found in the Bible, can reference diligence, and laziness within Hebrew Wisdom in many cases. The book of Proverbs is the Hebrew book of Wisdom. Its purpose is to provide practical instructions to live a wise, well ordered live. The difference between being diligent, wise, lazy, and having folly is knowledge. Proverbs addresses this in its first chapter: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7). This is the most basic ingredient in wisdom. All wisdom depends on knowledge of God and the submission to His will. To think or believe that you know something, but you do not know God negates the value of having knowledge. Wisdom comes from being faithfully diligent in the Word of God. Many positive effects come from being diligent. Some of those are wealth, wisdom, abundance, power, satisfaction, profit, and meaningfulness. Laziness brings...

The Prophets

...Liberti Todd BIBLE 105 September 28, 2014 Diligence and Laziness vs. Wisdom and Folly The believer is called to live a life that is above reproach. While that does not mean the believer will never stumble it does mean that the believer is to live life wisely. There should always be a difference between the lifestyle of a Christ follower and an unbeliever; the life of someone that has been transformed is not common but carful and consistent with their change. Evidence of thought plus attention to certain actions are what help the believer to stand out in the world, there is a call to diligence and wisdom as opposed to living life lazy and imprudent. Although there are similarities between diligence and wisdom, laziness and folly, there are differences as well; observing scripture and context each will be addressed in this essay. Solomon, the wisest man in the bible, was the author of the book of Proverbs. The book goes into great detail about the difference in outcome for the diligent and wise man compared to the lazy and foolish man. It is imperative for every believer to read and study the book of Proverbs in depth to understand the sayings and to be able to apply it to their lives. Interesting enough the Hebrew teaching on diligence show the blessings of the Lord flowing on those that to choose to obey; blessings do not just flow on the believer but also the unbeliever as well. The dictionary definition of the word diligence is “constant and earnest effort to accomplish...

Wisdom and Laziness

...Hebrew wisdom teaches that a wise man is one that is diligent with his work and a person that is lazy is a fool. One could say the primary source for Hebrew wisdom is form the book of Proverbs in the Old Testament written by a man who received wisdom from God, King Solomon (2 Chronicles 1:10). There are many themes covered throughout the book of Proverbs, however some of the most prevailing themes are that of wisdom and folly. “The book of Proverbs consistently presents the sluggard as a fool and the diligent person as wise” (Hindson, 2012). The teachings throughout the book of Proverbs show how diligence and laziness correspond with the contrast between wisdom and folly. If a person were to read the book of Proverbs they would not just understand that it is wise to be diligent but also see the rewards promised to them. King Solomon writes that, “ . . . the person in diligence is richly supplied” (Proverbs 13:4), “The plans of the diligent only lead to abundance . . .”(Proverbs 21:5), and “the hand of the diligent enriches.” (Pr. 10:4) (Frank, 2013). Through Solomon God has revealed the blessings that befall a diligent man and shows that he would rather a man be working than not. Being a diligent person will not only yield us fruit in the way of financial blessings but also in other areas of our lives. If we are diligent about the work Christ has left for us in Matthew 28, the great commission, we will be blessed as soul winners. A diligent man is not the only thing...

He did not simply speak it into being as He did the beast of the field and the fowls of the air. He carefully put it together step by step. God put man to sleep and from his side took a rib and formed the woman. Not stopping there, God took the woman by the hand and led her to Adam. Therefore marriage is a unique relationship, having its root in divinity (Gen. 2:22). However, marriage and family life, a thing of joy, pleasure, and high esteem at creation is now treated by many as a necessary evil and looked at by some disdainfully. "Those in it want to rush out and those outside want to rush in," they say. This has resulted in the fast disintegration of the marriage unit and subsequently the family. Statistics indicate that the decline of marriage and the family...

Relationships

...[pic] Christian Relationships Unit 1: Worship 1. Preliminary concerns 1.1. Misconceptions about worship The first popular misconception is that ‘worship is singing’. We treat ‘worship’ and ‘singing praises’ as synonymous terms. We speak as if they are the same thing. To reduce worship to singing is to dilute the biblical concept of worship in a way that is grossly irresponsible. It reduces the richness of biblical worship to one of its components. Yet when many Christians today commonly speak about worship, they mean nothing more than ‘singing’. |When you think or speak of worship, do you automatically associate it with ‘singing worship songs’? Is this the common usage| |in your church? If so, how do you think this fault crept into your vocabulary? | | | There are probably many ways this misconception has crept into our language and our thought. One key factor is that we have tended to label Christian music as ‘worship’, and we often call the person who leads the singing in our churches ‘the worship leader’. Unfortunately, this has caused us to equate worship with singing. A second misconception is that ‘worship is something we do on special occasions’. Worship is what we do when we gather with God’s people. The activities that make...

Montaigne

...1575 ESSAYS by Michel de Montaigne translated by Charles Cotton I. OF CUSTOM, AND THAT WE SHOULD NOT EASILY CHANGE A LAW RECEIVED. HE seems to have had a right and true apprehension of the power of custom, who first invented the story of a countrywoman who, having accustomed herself to play with and carry, a young calf in her arms, and daily continuing to do so as it grew up, obtained this by custom, that, when grown to be a great ox, she was still able to bear it. For, in truth, custom is a violent and treacherous schoolmistress. She, by little and little, slily and unperceived, slips in the foot of her authority, but having by this gentle and humble beginning, with the benefit of time, fixed and established it, she then unmasks a furious and tyrannic countenance, against which we have no more the courage or the power so much as to lift up our eyes. We see her, at every turn, forcing and violating the rules of nature: "Usus efficacissimus rerum omnium magister." I refer to her Plato's cave in his Republic, and the physicians, who so often submit the reasons of their art to her authority; as the story of that king, who by custom brought his stomach to that pass, as to live by poison, and the maid that Albertus reports to have lived upon spiders. In that new world of the Indies, there...
