The Dunsinane Times

Our king has viciously been murdered! According to the Scotland police department King Duncan was murdered during his stay at Macbeth’s castle whilst in his sleep. At first King Duncan’s two chamberlains were considered suspects, but before these men could be further interrogated, they were slaughtered by Macbeth at the scene. Macbeth claimed the actions was made as a momentarily act of rage and desperation towards the murder of King Duncan. Macbeth has yet not been charged for the incident nor has he wished to comment on it.
Furthermore it has been reported that neither King Duncan’s wife or sons have been seen at the scene of the crime, so people are therefor wondering whether they have fleet the country or not. Nor is it known whether or not they know of the circumstances concerning the death of our king, and the future of Scotland is therefor unknown for now. However it has been reported that other Nobel men will have a meeting later this week to decide what shall become of the future of Scotland.
It was later reported that King Duncan gone to Macbeth’s castle for the celebration of Macbeth’s new title as Thane of Cawdor. King Duncan had apparently praised Macbeth for his deed during our last war and also praised Lady Macbeth for her hospitality. Furthermore it had been reported by general Banquo that everything had seemed normal and rather pleasant at dinner, so he did not assume that the killer had been one of the guests. Others have confirmed this statement. After the dinner witnesses state that King Duncan then retired to his bedroom and he was not seen or heard from until the next morning, when his mutilated body was discovered by Macduff. Neither Macduff, Macbeth nor general Banquo has wished to comment on the incident.

Whilst the investigation continues, the police have chosen to stay quiet about the case until they

...Witches are women who posses evil magic powers who associate with the devil. Most Western culture imagines witches as women who wear pointy hat, fly on a broomstick and lay curses and misfortune upon others. However, the three witches in the play Macbeth demonstrate a different approach. The Three Witches are depicted as old, ugly women who have beards and scaly fingers. Additionally, they have a critical role in telling the main character, Macbeth, the prophecies and predictions. As a result, the Three Witches play a significant importance to the play Macbeth because they are the ones who instill negative thoughts and ideas into Macbeth’s head with their predictions and emphasize the main theme of evil and darkness. The evil witches are important to the play because they are the ones who instill negative thoughts and ideas into Macbeth’s head with their predictions. First of all, the witches’ predictions give him the idea of killing King Duncan. When the witches first encounter Macbeth, they say, “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis!/ All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor!/ All hail, Macbeth! That shalt be king hereafter” (Shakespeare 1:3 50-53). Macbeth is confused when he hears about the prediction and he is astonished when the prediction regarding Cawdor becomes true. After that, he immediately begins to think about his last prediction and imagines about committing murder. He says, “Two truths are told,/ As happy prologues to the swelling act/ Of...

...affects Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is also fine with only killing Duncan, whereas Macbeth murders everyone who he feels will take his royalty from him. The witches tell Macbeth the first three prophecies; Thane of Glams, Thane of Cawdor, and The future King. He is confused at first, but then called the witches to come back, and tell him more, this is his ego growing. He wanted to know, “to be King stands not within the prospect of belief, no more than to be Cawdor”. When news came that the Thane of Cawdor is now Macbeth, fuels the fire, his ego starts to build even more. “Glams and Thane of Cawdor! The greatest is behind,” Macbeth says aside. Once he is king, to be sure he hangs on to his power, Macbeth visits the witches again for a second time, asks for prophecies. One of the four apparitions was that, “None of woman born shall harm Macbeth.” This apparition also contributes to Macbeth being egotistical, because it...

What Part Does the Supernatural Play in Macbeth?

...What part does the supernatural play in Macbeth? The word supernatural is defined as ‘Not being able to be explained by the laws of nature’. The majority of us would link the word supernatural to ghosts and paranormal activities, which these days can be proved by using complex technology. However if we look back at Shakespeare’s era in around 1606 the majority of the people there completely believed in the supernatural. Their main belief was that witches existed and had great power to change what ever they wanted. It was believed so much in this time that even King James believed that these supernatural beings existed. Although nowadays it is completely the opposite, most of us believe that these supernatural beings are just mythological. The play Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare during the time that probably he himself and the rest of the population believed in the supernatural, it includes several supernatural events and the general atmosphere is a sinister one. The very first part of the play Macbeth includes three witches other wise described by Shakespeare as the weird sisters. These three witches plan to meet Macbeth upon a heath in the storm which is surrounding them. The effect of this automatically gives the reader the feeling that the play is a sinister one. The witches communicate to each other by speaking in riddles, such as “Fair is foul and foul is fair”. We learn two things from this first part of speech from the witches, firstly we can see that...

Sleepwalking In Macbeth

...will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine making the green one red.” (II, ii, 74-81). This paranoia and guilt is similar to Lady Macbeth’s as she is trying to wash out the blood of Duncan but fails. Her behavior during the time of Duncan’s murder is also very different to her current behavior. During the murder of Duncan, she was very calm and relaxed. She was the person pulling Macbeth together. This can be seen as she says “Infirm on purpose! / Give me the daggers. The sleeping and the dead / Are but as pictures. ‘Tis the eye of childhood / That fears a painted devil.” (II, ii, 68-71). This showed how much more confident and calm she was in comparison to Macbeth. Now, she is scared that the smell of blood won’t go away and that her hands aren't becoming clean. She is no longer confident and calm in her mind. lksdflkjsdf Macbeth claims that he feels no fear due to the apparitions by the Wierd Sisters. One of the apparitions said that Macbeth is going to stay king and will be unharmed untill Birnam Forest comes to Dunsinane. We see this utter confidence from Macbeth as he speakes with the doctor of preparing for the war. He says, “Bring it after me.-- / I will not be afraid of death and bane / Till Birnam Forest Come to Dunsinane.” (Shakespeare, 173). THis shows that through the comfort of the witches words, Macbeth isnt at all worried about the large army coming after him as also (according to his thought) all of them are “born” of woman. ACT...

...value, and he seems to be fit for his status. But his encounter with the witches awakens in him a deep impatient ambition. Immediately after the first prophecy of being Thane of Cawdor becomes true the "horrid image" of the murder of King Duncan in order to become king himself crosses his mind. He is not totally cold and solely ambitious as shown by his terror of the murder image, which thoroughly defies his loyalty. There is love in Macbeth as shown by his letter to Lady Macbeth in which he calls her his "dearest partner of greatness." Macbeth is already thinking about being king but he is undecided about whether it is better to succumb to the temptation presented by the witches or to wait for Fate to crown him. Banquo warns him that at times evil forces "tell us truths . . . to betray's in deepest consequence." Even though he does not state it out loud, Macbeth does care about morality and religion, as demonstrated in his soliloquy (I, IV, 12-28) where he lists the three reasons why he should not kill Duncan: he is "his kinsman," "his subject" and "his host." Macbeth adds that "Duncan hath born his faculties so meek, hath been so clear in his great office, that his virtues will plead like angels." Lady Macbeth knows her husband and feels that he is "too full o' th' milk of human kindness." To counter this she accuses Macbeth of being a coward if he does not kill Duncan. Macbeth does not want to be a coward, either as soldier or as husband, so he accepts to murder Duncan. His...

Macbeth from Good to Evil

...witches’ prophecies, Macbeth is told he would be Thane of Cawdor and then eventually become king. After becoming Thane of Cawdor shortly following the execution of the previous Thane, one prophecy lingered in Macbeth’s mind, becoming King of Scotland, which was impossible for as long as Duncan lived. Macbeth has the thought of becoming ruler but the idea of murdering his King was never the plan, “That tears shall drown the wind. / I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only / Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself / and falls on th’ other” (I. vii. 25-28). However, his wife, Lady Macbeth, makes it known to Macbeth that the only way he would become king is to murder Duncan, and does so by accusing him of being a coward: From this time Such I account thy love. Art thou afeard To be the same in thine own act and valor As thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have that Which thou esteem’st the ornament of life, And live a coward in thine own esteem (I. Vii. 39-43). Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth the perfect plan of getting the guards drunk and using them to cover up the assassination. Quickly, the good in Macbeth fades as he agrees to the plan, “I am settled, and bend up / Each corporal agent to this terrible feat” (I. vii. 79-80). With Duncan’s death, and Malcolm and Donalbain, Duncan’s sons, leaving for...

Macbeth

...narrative on fact, but instead used historical events as a frame for the action in the play. The real Macbeth, ruler of the Moray region of Scotland, was elected to the Scottish throne when the previous king, Duncan, died in battle. Whether Macbeth killed Duncan in the battle remains unknown. Historical opinions suggest that Macbeth was a charitable king who brought peace and prosperity to Scotland during his reign of 17 years. During this time, he made advances into northern England, which displeased Siward, Earl of Northumberland. Siward then campaigned to depose Macbeth and reinstate Malcolm Canmore, Duncan's son. Malcolm eventually beheaded Macbeth in a duel at Lumphanan to become Malcolm III, King of Scotland. Some sources say that the Battle of Dunsinane, and the concept of Birnam Wood encroaching on Dunsinane, refers to an earlier battle during Macbeth's reign, while others dismiss it as part-myth ascribed to Macbeth by Shakespeare. Historical context William Shakespeare wrote Macbeth shortly after the death of Queen Elizabeth I, at the time when King James I's...

Mental Deterioration In Macbeth

...that follows him because of his intentional disruption of the chain eventually results in a battle between Macbeth and those seeking revenge for his crimes. However, Macbeth, listening only to what the witches have told him, refuses to be fearful-saying instead “Bring the armor and follow me. I will not be afraid of death and destruction until Birnam forest picks itself up and moves to Dunsinane.” However, once again his experiences portray the effects of disturbing the great chain of being. Despite this seemingly un-common prophecy of occurrence, the natural order of things must be returned to and anything can happen in order for this to occur. This is shown when Malcom orders his soldiers to “Bring the armor and follow me. I will not be afraid of death and destruction until Birnam forest picks itself up and moves to Dunsinane.” Thus resulting in the Birnam forest picking itself up and moving to Dunsinane. Once again, Macbeth believes that the witches’ prophecy can prevent him from becoming subject to the revenge of disturbing the chain as he boldly declares to Macduff “You’re wasting your time trying to wound me. You might as well try to stab the air with your sword. Go fight someone who can be harmed. I lead a charmed life, which can’t be ended by anyone born from a woman.” However, his experiences subsequently show that no power is higher than the great chain of being and the natural order of things will fall into place despite ambitious fools’ attempts to fool it. Macduff...

Taking Leave

...Tales from Shakespeare, by Charles & Mary Lamb (1807), Illustrated By Arthur Rackham (1899/1909) [pic] When Duncan the Meek reigned King of Scotland, there lived a great thane, or lord, called Macbeth. This Macbeth was a near kinsman to the king, and in great esteem at court for his valour and conduct in the wars; an example of which he had lately given, in defeating a rebel army assisted by the troops of Norway in terrible numbers. The two Scottish generals, Macbeth and Banquo, returning victorious from this great battle, their way lay over a blasted heath, where they were stopped by the strange appearance of three figures like women, except that they had beards, and their withered skins and wild attire made them look not like any earthly creatures. Macbeth first addressed them, when they, seemingly offended, laid each one her choppy finger upon her skinny lips, in token of silence; and the first of them saluted Macbeth with the title of thane of Glamis. The general was not a little startled to find himself known by such creatures; but how much more, when the second of them followed up that salute by giving him the title of thane of Cawdor, to which honour he had no pretensions; and again the third bid him "All hail! king that shalt be hereafter!" Such a prophetic greeting might well amaze him, who knew that while the king's sons lived he could not hope to succeed to the throne. Then turning to Banquo, they pronounced him, in a sort of riddling terms, to be lesser than...
