The false sense of power and the never ending conversations that occur through texting ultimately lead to the destruction of relationships.

Although texting has added many benefits to the daily lives of many, it has created a false sense of power through being in control of deciding to respond. (1) Texting involves a sender and a receiver. As the conversation carries, these roles change from person to person. (2) There is more to these roles than just responding back and forth to one another. (2) In a texting conversation, the person receiving the message maintains a false sense of power by having the choice to respond back. (2) Alexia LaFata, author of the article, “Stop Texting,” acknowledges that by not responding to a text message, the sender gains power. (3) According to Lafata, “So, because we (unfortunately) live in a world in which vulnerability is weakness and a lack of power, sending a text means you just lost a little bit of power. Whoever receives your text has your vulnerability in his or her hands and therefore has the power. The more time that passes without a response, the more power the receiver has. It’s just the science of texting.” (3) In other words, LaFata believes that by a person sending a text, they are vulnerable to being ignored, which in turn results in hurt feelings. (4) LaFata’s theory about the false sense of power is extremely meaningful because it sheds light on how the simple task of texting can cause emotional distress and, ultimately, can be a contributing factor to a ruined relationship. (4) One example that conveys this theory is the feature, “Read Receipts,” on the IMessage feature of the Iphone. (3) This feature allows the person to see when their message has been “read” or seen by the receiver. (3) When a receiver chooses to not respond, their Iphone still displays that they read the message. (3) This can cause various

...facing our nation. During the year, extremists plotted to attack—unsuccessfully, thanks to the work of our Joint Terrorism Task Forces—the U.S. Capitol, the New York Federal Reserve Bank, and other landmarks on U.S. soil. Tragically, on the 11th anniversary of 9/11, a hateful attack in Benghazi took the lives of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya and three other Americans. In the cyber realm, a rising tide of hackers took electronic aim at global cyber infrastructure, causing untold damages. High-dollar white-collar crimes of all kinds also continued to siphon significant sums from the pocketbooks of consumers. And in Newtown, Connecticut, 20 young children and six adults lost their lives in one of the worst mass shootings in American history, ending a year of violence that saw similar tragedies around the country. Working with its colleagues around the globe, the FBI is committed to taking a leadership role in protecting the nation. As you can see from this book—an annual compilation of stories from the FBI’s public website that provides a snapshot of Bureau milestones, activities, and accomplishments—we used the full range of our intelligence, investigative, and operational skills to address major threats during the year. We helped avert terrorist attacks and derail terrorist supporters, put cyber criminals and fraudsters behind bars, and...

The Big Book for Small Business

...Previously published as By the Seat of Your Pants This book is dedicated to my father, Bill, an old soldier who battles every day to overcome a horrendous stroke. He was a model enlightened entrepreneur, a fact that took me years to appreciate. His compassion with his employees and dedication to service inspired me to be a better businessman and a better person. When I was growing up, he liked to say, “Son, the most important word in the English language is ‘empathy.’ ” When I told him I was starting a business, his first words were, “Always treat your employees right.” He learned that appreciation the hard way, losing his father at a young age and countless war buddies in the trenches. But his love for God, country, and his fellow citizens never wavered. This one’s for you, Dad. In the beginning I was known merely as Seven, one of the nine surviving Garde from the planet Lorien, the fate of which was, and still is, left in our hands. Those of us who aren’t lost.
