The Field Movie Review

“There's another law stronger than the common law. The law of the land.” Two short sentences sum up what The Field is all about. A dark metaphor of gritty life on the land, set on the Irish countryside. The Field succeeds in being dark, very dark. Adapted to the screen from the John B. Keene play of the same name much of the symbolism translates, however most of the character development fails to make the journey. The Field centers on “Bull” McCabe (Richard Harris), a man whose family has farmed a field for generations and intends to do the same for generations to come. This bearded and battered old man has little else to show for his efforts than the fertile soil he rents from a local, mysterious, widow. He continually offers her what little he has for the land to no avail and carries on tending to this land that isn’t his. Here the story could end - Bull would persist on and be happy, though his gruff exterior wouldn’t let on - and no play or movie would be required. But when a smooth American played by Tom Berenger comes on the scene with money to spend and intentions do so McCabe’s simple plans go enormously awry. The field goes on the market for public auction as the widow changes her tune from ‘I won’t sell’, to ‘I’ll sell to whomever, whenever as long as the price is right’. The combination of the auction and the American trigger turmoil and all the formerly contented townsfolk can’t keep to themselves. Meanwhile Bull and his son Tadgh (Sean Bean) decide to settle the score and keep their land. Bean, like Berenger, is given a character with little to sink his acting chops into. Thus begins a plethora of complaints that weigh on the scale opposite Harris’ epic performance. Thin characters are accepted, and almost expected, in so many movies that when a film comes along with the intention of portraying a man’s religious dedication to his land I get excited for the character study. The Field’s study of Bull McCabe will sit with me for a long time. I can hear his words, feel his pain, and genuinely like him for all his many faults because he, in all his delusions, is real. From there the character study ends. The townspeople have the same intricacy found in a video game. As a whole they lack depth, representing mere two-dimensional characters. The tinkers are what tinkers are supposed to be. The bar man is what a bar man is supposed to be. They are made much too simple. The American’s motivation for coming to this particular village to buy this particular field is vague at best and the widow, who controls the entire mess that is unfolding, is as underdeveloped as Barbara Hershey in The Natural. I fail to understand her motivation. If money was her incentive she would have been money-hungry the day her husband left her the field or any of the 16 years thereafter. I could forgive these secondary characters their trespasses and focus solely on Bull if his relationship to his wife, his son Tadgh, and the widow weren’t so weak. Much more could be harvested from the relationship between Bull and his wife. Much more could be made of the long-ago suicide of Bull’s son Seamie and its influence on the family unit, especially the effect on Bull and Tadgh. The brush strokes are there and I’m sure on stage brush strokes are enough. But stage and screen are two entirely different formats for a reason. The Field is not about a field after all, but about timeless questions. What rights do men have to land? There are fiscal rights to everything, yes, but where do god-given rights cease to exist in favor of monetary ones. The Field captures the spirit of the argument for a man’s right to the fruits of his labor in a time when leaders of the political realm and captains of industry have sullied the idea. Bull McCabe embodies the oldest guard of the old country: grit, determination, and apology to nobody but the almighty. He might be seen as delusional by most, but a man will often lose control of his emotions when his livelihood is being ripped away from him. Bull is made into a dark character. Almost too dark at times, but it works. Harris is a pro and Bull translates because of that. More than anything else The Field becomes both an annotation and a condemnation of one man’s devotion. Bull is so obsessed with his field and his way of life, that he loses sight of what the field is actually supposed to represent. He forgets about everything but the land and in doing so he loses everything but the land. Despite Harris’ compelling performance The Field ultimately falls victim to the same plight as Bull McCabe: by focusing so tirelessly on epic symbolism that is all The Field is eventually left with.

...Field of Dreams Synopsis of reviews/articles written about the film Based on the review written by Roger Ebert (Ebert, 1989) The farmer Ray Kinsella is in the middle of his cornfield when he first begins hearing voices “If you build it, he will come.” Prior to the farmer hearing voices, Field of Dreams is a sensible film about a young couple who want to run a family farm in Iowa. When the voice speaks for the first time the audience is stumped with the thought of this movie turning into a religious based film. The movie develops a fantasy when farmer Ray understands the voice wants him to build a baseball field in the middle of his corn crops so Shoeless Joe Jackson (deceased) can materialize out of the Corfield and come play there. The movie prudently does not try to explain the strange events that happen after the field is built, it depends on a poetic vision to make its point. A specific speech in the movie describes baseball in a simple and true way, which ultimately describes the goal of the players who emerge from the cornfield, which is to simply play they game they love. The believable relationship created by the young couple Ray and Annie develops the theme that love means sharing your loved one’s dreams. Field of Dreams will not appeal to realists, it is made up of fantasies but stays true to what the plot promises, “if you build it, he will come.” Shoeless Joe Jackson does not return from the dead to save the world, but to answer the cry of a baseball legend....

This Is England Review

...and skinheads A review of Shane Meadows: This is England. Shaun Fields is a 12 year old in the 1980s, who has a hard time after the death of his father. He is not afraid of saying his opinion and throws a punch whenever someone gets on his nerves. On his way home from school, after being bullied for wearing second hand clothing, Shaun meets a gang of young adults in an underpass. With the gang showing him sympathy, he ends up becoming a part of this gang, and the leader Woody becomes like an older brother to him. Being a part of the gang Shaun finds happiness and joy, and even gets a girlfriend called Smell. He wants to fight for his country, to get rid of all the people whom is not Englishmen by blood, and Combo invites them to join him to fulfill his new vision. Shane Meadows’ interpretation of the skinhead era in the 1980s does an exceptional job colliding a misfit youngster (Shaun Fields), and a gang of peaceful skinheads to help our protagonist find acceptance and happiness, after the tragedy of his father’s death - during the Falklands War. Meadows manages to capture all sorts of emotion during the movie, with some great actors and a well-thought musical atmosphere. With a mixture of the harsh ganglife and the difficulties of life. The settings/feelings of the movie becomes enhanced...

Cidade de Deus

...CIDADE DE DEUS : A Review of City of God Kimbel Westerson Jose Konde Grand Canyon University- ENG 105 As a Portuguese speaker, it is with happiness and proudness that I see a beautiful work of art made in a luso-country; a work that makes the difference not just in luso-countries but in the eyes of all the world. City of God (Brazil, 2002 directed by Fernando Meirelles) is like that. Pop, polemic, tough and funny, it was the new pearl of the Brazilian cinema. Ironically, the movie is amazing because it explores one of the biggest issues in Brazil: the violence. The violence in Brazil is well known around the world. And this movie was filmed literally in the ghettos cariocas of the Cidade Alta, Nova Sepetiba and Cidade de Deus, and the movie was born with controversy, because those places are controlled by the drug lords. Therefore, they needed authorization of the bosses of the crime of that time to film the movie. By good fortune, they said yes, with a condition that they should contract the largest number possible of people that lived in those ghettos to act on the movie. Because of that, the director Fernando Meirelles and the co-director Katia Lund, who had already experienced work in the ghetto when producing the video clip “They Don’t Care About Us” by Michael Jackson, (who began as a director of TV commercials which gave him a command of technique and trained him to work quickly) created an organization named “We Are Cinema”, that prepared and selected...

Netflix Article Review

...Article Review #1 2/16/12 Article Summary I am currently a Netflix subscriber and was very interested by an article in the Los Angeles Times on 2/7/12 about Verizon and Redbox teaming up to start a similar but “improved service”. I also am somewhat impatient and enjoy being able to jump in the car and grab a movie instead of the waiting two days to receive it in the mail. In the article they discuss the pros and cons of Verizon and Redbox joining this business and how it will affect Netflix; and what Netflix counter will be to stay on top in the field. Netflix sees its DVD delivery service as “dying”, they have made it clear they are not investing anymore money in the service but they will now focus more on streaming. Streaming is extremely convenient and user friendly! The article does not go into the greatness of steaming but makes it very clear that Netflix is 100% correct in their focuses for the future. Netflix can be watched on multiple gaming devices, smart phone and of course laptops too and that makes it more marketable. They also have rights to certain movies that others trying to get involved in the field will not be able to use; this makes it hard for their competitors. They offer more than 10,000 movies and series though their streaming service alone. Netflix can be streamed internationally. Redbox’s parent company Coinstar Inc. has teamed up with Verizon; both companies have a large presence in each of their own areas of business and will...

Movie Rview for the Great Dictator

...Movie review “The Great Dictator” “The Great Dictator” is a 1940 war comedy of when Hitler or (Adenoid Hynkel as played by Charles Chaplin) started World War 2 but with a funny, awkward, weird, and a dramatic twist. Which becomes very obvious right when the movie starts. The basic plot point to this movie would be Adenoid Hynkel Trying to build a new world all together while a hometown barber is trying to not be arrested by Hynkel’s militia. (who is also played by Charles Chaplin). This movie was not only acted in but written and directed by Charles Chaplin, but many more big faces in this movie like, Paulette Goddard who played a shy but very sweet women named Hannah, and Jack Oakie who played a bit of a bipolar character named Napaloni. The mechanics of this movie were surprisingly well for how old it is. Lets just say with the technology the director had he used the most out of it to make this movie “great”. The acting in this movie could have been A LOT better but you sort of have to give the actors some leeway because this movie is such a high paced movie, there are no breaks in any scene. The music in this film had to be phenomenal because Charles Chaplin was always a silent actor in all his films until this one.Now then, the editing that happened in this movie, to me was absolutely horrible, after almost every scene it would hop to a completely different scene across the world that made no sense to the plot and was just there for a cheap way to stick a joke in. Speeking...

Review of 2012 Movie

...Introduction The following summary report will review the events that took place in a movie called “2012” that was released in the year 2009. The report will provide a review of the plot but it will primarily break it down into the main scientific information the writers choose to include and the validity of their claims. It will also provide the geological landmarks that were used throughout the film. The creators of the film took advantage of some very high-quality special effects to dramatize what it might be like if the Earth was to come to an abrupt end. The plot of the movie choose to focus in on the propaganda and conspiracies that many people actually believed to be true about the winter solstice of the year 2012. These conspirators believed that on December 21, 2012 the world as we know it would come to an end. Obviously now in the year 2013 we know that we have successfully survived this “catastrophic” event and it is safe to say these claims had/have no scientific merit behind them. The people who believed these claims prior to the date they feared so much thought that all the planets in our solar system would align, and that this planetary alignment would set forth a series of events that would result in the end of the world. They also concluded that a Mayan calendar would also be ending on this same date. If only the people who bought into these claims took the time to research their validity they would have been able to learn that planetary alignment of all the...

Faradays Law

...LivePhoto Physics Activity 32 Name: Date: Exploring Faraday’s Law In 1820 Hans Christian Oersted observed that electric currents create magnetic fields. Consequently many scientists made unsuccessful attempts to create current in the presence of magnetic fields. After over 10 years of investigation Michael Faraday and Joseph Henry, working independently on different sides of the Atlantic, made the discovery that if a conducting coil has a changing magnetic flux passing through it an electromotive force is created that causes a current to flow through the coil. The equation describing this phenomenon quantitatively is known as Faraday’s Law. a b c In this activity you will be asked to use Faraday’s Law to explain why the current induced in a coil and thus the voltage across it changes the way it does when the north or south pole of rod shaped magnet is moved into and then back out of the center of a coil of wire at various speeds. No calculations are required in this activity, just thinking! Figure 1: The north pole of a cylindrical magnet is: (a) moving into the center of a coil of wire; (b) reversing direction; and then (c) moving out of the coil. The coil’s voltage vs. time is recorded with a computer interfaced voltage probe. Theoretical Review: According to Faraday’s Law, at any moment the induced emf (denoted ) across a conducting loop with N turns is equal to –N times the rate of change of the magnetic flux passing through the area enclosed...

Any attempt to describe him will risk making the movie seem more conventional than it is, but let me try. It's a comedy, I guess. Or maybe a drama. Or a dream. The screenplay by Eric Roth has the complexity of modern fiction, not the formulas of modern movies. Its hero, played by Tom Hanks, is a thoroughly decent man with an IQ of 75, who manages between the 1950s and the 1980s to become involved in every major event in American history. And he survives them all with only honesty and niceness as his shields. And yet this is not a heartwarming story about a mentally retarded man. That cubbyhole is much too small and limiting for Forrest Gump. The movie is more of a meditation on our times, as seen through the eyes of a man who lacks cynicism and takes things for exactly what they are. Watch him carefully and you will understand...

My Movie Critique of the Blind Side

...My Movie Critique of The Blind Side Shannon Cowper English 225: Introduction to Film Michael Warren February 2, 2014 Some people may feel that if a movie wins an academy award that it is a great movie because the film critics have experience, the film critics are paid professionals, and also that the film critics decide which movies are nominated for an academy award so the movie must be good. But this is where many people beg to differ regarding the film critic’s reviews on a particular film. In some cases, if a film critic decides that a movie is good, not every movie goer will feel the same way. I have sat and listened to Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert as they either praised or destroyed a film. Whenever I chose to go and view a film they have given their customary thumbs up to I would normally not enjoy the film. It is possible that I did not see the same things within a film as they did as it was evident that I was not viewing the film in the same manner as a film critic by looking for camera angles, editing, or frames. All that I cared about was escaping for a couple of hours and receiving some enjoyment from the movie. Some people feel that this is a special time for film criticism. Never before have more people been able to express their views about a film. Being a film critic was once a profession, but it’s not a job any longer and there is not a huge financial gain by doing so. However, this opens the door for those who want to critique a film and also...

Introduction to Film

...the 1950’s to the 1980’s from being disabled as a child wearing braces on his legs to a wealthy businessman who ironically became involved in almost every major event in American history. The movie “Forrest Gump” is said to be a movie that makes you laugh, cry and think. In 1995, Robert Zemeckis, director of Forrest Gump won the Oscar for best achievement in directing and in his acceptance speech he thanks the “motion picture fans” by saying “In historic numbers you have embraced a film that at its heart offers a human life affirming hopeful story” as I agree that this movie has made a social impact on us all that have seen the movie. “Telling the story out of chronological order, jumping back and forth between the present and the past is in Non-linear order” (Goodykoontz, 2011). The movie begins with Forrest Gump played by Tom Hanks is sitting on a bench waiting for a bus. We don’t know why he’s sitting there but as he’s sitting, he is telling his life story to people who are waiting for the bus as well going from the time he was a young boy to an adult and he eventually gets to why he is waiting for the bus. Young Forrest played by Michael Conner Humphreys is stricken as a different child because he has an IQ of 75 and braces on his legs. Forrest’s mother Mrs. Gump played by Sally Field, is initially his backbone encouraging him to not think about how people feel about him as she...

Media Studies

...“critics”. Critics in today’s world are extremely influential in all fields be it movies, fashion, technology or even travel. Their opinions are highly valued and they are feared to a very large extent because their one comment can seal the fate of a movie or a product in the market. Critics today are not just confined to big names such as Shobha De or Rajeev Makhani or Vir Sanghvi each and every consumer has largely acquired the status of a critic with the advent of social media where every person’s view becomes a critical opinion because there are hundred people who read the comment or review and get influenced by their opinions. So with the freedom to voice ones opinion comes added responisbilty for every individual to be unbiased and fair while passing a judgement. An opinion leader whose every comment is regareded with so much importance should be very careful as to what he says for his one comment made in haste or prejudice can affect the fate of a product, person or movie and all the lives associated with all these products and people. They should be highly unbiased and should not hold any grudge while stating their opinions. Personally the judgement passed by critics doesn’t over power my decision too much when it comes to movies but in case of fashion, technology and others their opinions matter in infulencing my decision. When it comes to technology it is a big investment so naturally I look up reviews by people on the internet and also pour...
