The Gifts of the Holy Spirit. * Introduction:
I am primarily going to refer to the gifts of the Spirit as spoken in 1 Corinthians 12-14. Would be cool to work through these three chapters verse for verse, but time will not allow this. Before I am even going to touch on the gifts of the Spirit, I do think its important that we look at the context of the book. Why did Paul find it necessary to discuss these gifts with this specific church. So important context pointers (which we read about in Acts and 1 and 2 Corinthians): * It was rebuild by Julius Caesar in 44 BC, after being a waste for about 100 years. * It had a lot of economic advantages, because of where the city was build. (BETWEEN TWO TRADING ROOTS; one land route and one sea route; NOT NECESSARY RICH GROUND; also had unlimited supply of water). Strategic place for a city – the wealth attracted people from all over. * Also known as a place where free slaves came to live, after they received their freedom, and many of them worked their way up into society. Roman soldiers also settled their – less Gentiles, Jews also immigrated to that place. * Temple of Aphrodite (goddess of love) was a famous temple in the city – had over 1000 cult temple prostitutes. * Greeks had a famous proverb in that time, namely, “to act like a corinthian” – referred to the moral decay in the city. * The situation in Corinth have been viewed as a hopeless situation – you do not want to go there as a minister of the word. * Purpose of writing: 1 Corinthians 5:9-13. It is clear that the way of Corinthians infiltrated the church and the way church was done in that time and in that city. He wrote this letter after hearing some disturbing reports: He heard of divisions occurring amongst the Corinthian saints, he was also informed of a gross sexual immoral act (man had his father’s wife) that happenened in the church – and the church did not do anything about it – they actually boasted about the tolerance that they showed in the situation (Chapter 5). He also heard about Christians taking their brother to court, having pagan people judging over their spiritual matters (chapter 6). Wrong conduct when it comes to the Lord’s Supper (chapter 11) and of doctrinal errors concerning the resurrection (chapter15). * Another reason for writing the letter was seen in a three-man delegation that arrived from Corinth bringing a letter which asked questions about marriage (7:1), virgins (7:25), food sacrificed to idols (8:1), spiritual gifts (12:1), the collection of the saints (16:1), and Apollos (16:12). * We can also see this in how the book was structured: chapters 1-4 – focused on giving an introduction, explain the situation, thanks giving, etc. Chapter 5-6 focused on the disorder in the church and then chapter 7-16 – certain issues in the church was addressed and also includes a conclusion.

I am speaking about spiritual gifts, but it is so important that we do understand the context in what Paul said these things. It is easily to get freaky about certain things, and we are not just called to be strong in the spiritual, but also be strong in word.
It is also IMPORTANT to mention that the fact that they asked questions about spiritual gifts, one gets the impression that it was a natural thing for the church to function in these different gifts. It was not seen as abnormal, it was not seen as weird, but rather as a necessary aspect of church.

* What are the gifts of the Holy Spirit?
Lets make a list – without reading from 1 Corinthians 12, can you tell me how many gifts of the Holy Spirit there is and then I want you to identify them. * Gift Categories
The gifts can be subcategorized into three. 1. Power a. Faith b. Miracles c. Gifts of Healing 2. Inspiration d. Tongues e. Interpretation of tongues f. Prophecy 3. Knowledge g. Word of Wisdom h. Word of Knowledge i. Discernment of spirits
Some important info on the gifts: * The Gifts never indicate maturity. One can operate in them, the day after one gets saved – I have seen this a lot especially with tongues and the gift of healing. One can be 20 years saved and also struggle to operate in them. You cannot look at someone and judge their maturity by how many people they have healed, etc. * These gifts can operate where there is a lack of intimacy with the Lord.
Mat 7:21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?'
A gift is a gift – it is given by a God that is generous, I have actually experienced people walking in their gifting – without experiencing intimacy with the father – or being in an awful place with Him. Gifts are not an assurance of salvation. I believe we have a choice in how we receive the gifts of the Spirit – it can be either be with an attitude of: I want to be powerful, I want to be strong – and sometimes the Lord still gives the gifts, or it can be with an attitude that speaks of intimacy – the meaning of a gift changes in an atmosphere of intimacy then an atmosphere without intimacy. * The gifts is not the end in its self. When you walk in these gifts you cannot think “that you have arrived”. It is about loving God, and loving people. The gifts are primarily hearing His voice and empowers and equips us to love people. So we can say that the gifts is an extension of His love. It helps us to love. (1 Corinthians 13 – if we do not have love we do not have anything.).

* Criteria in which the gifts must function: * The gifts of the Holy Spirit (their purpose) when used skilfully and accurately in its original function, will promote the love of God. Its about loving God with all that we are and then loving people – it’s the substance to the gifts – it gives meaning to it (NB 1 Corinthians 13). * It needs to promote unity in the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12). Different functions together forms one body. One part of the body cannot go on its own – that will cause dysfunctional conduct. * It also needs to lead to divine order and the peace of God (1 Corinthians 14:33). * It has been given for the common good (1 Corinthians 12:7).

* Gifts are given at the will of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:11) and differs from the life-purpose/calling of saints, which prepares them for a specific style, class or realm of ministry. * These gifts are general and usually available to believers who have been baptized in the Holy Spirit.

* God wants us to desire the gifts of the Spirit – we sometimes think its humble to say that we focus on God and not on the gifts – it is true – but it is clear in 1 Corinthians 14:1 – that we must earnestly desire the gifts especially that we may prophecy.
Why? We cannot do this on our own – we need these gifts to reach the world. We need to realize it. * BUT ESPECIALLY THAT YOU MAY PROPHECY. * Why must we desire the gifts? It part in loving people – the church and the lost. 1 Corinthians 14:12.

The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Gifts

...The Holy Spirit and the Spiritual Gifts Natalie Barrionuevo Liberty University Introduction Growing up in and out of church I have not only heard about the Holy Spirit but also seen the works of the Holy Spirit and the gifts that accompany it. The Holy Spirit plays a key role in a Christian’s daily life. God has given us this companion as a substitute for himself to lead and guide us on our Christian walk. With this companion comes gifts which we have the ability to receive through Christ to help us along our journey. Here, we will discuss the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the spiritual gifts that can accompany it. Holy Spirit Theological Definition Baptism in the Spirit is the moment when the spirit begins to operate in a believer’s life. Being baptized in the spirit does not mean you are more spiritually mature or holier than the next person. Spirit baptism cannot be equated with receiving the gifts of the spirit. (Elwell, 1996) Biblical Foundation The Holy Spirit is discussed throughout the entire bible. In Genesis 1: 2 it states “The earth was formless and empty, and the darkness covered the deep waters, and the spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters” (KJV/NLT, 2005). This is the first...

...Wisdom is the first of the seven gifts of the holy spirit which are strengthened through the sacrament of confirmation. Wisdom helps us realize that the truths of Christian belief are far more important to are eternal soul that the things of these worlds, and and it helps us love creation for the sake of god instead of the sake of the creation itself. Another gift of the holy spirit is understanding. The gift of Understanding allows us to graspthe very essence of the truths of the Catholic faith. Through understanding, we gain a certitude about our beliefs that moves beyond faith. Counsel is the third gift of the holy spirit. Prudence can be practiced by anyone, but counsel is supernatural. ...subject in the Holy Bible would be the subject of spiritual gifts. Spiritual gifts are “gifts of God enabling the Christians to perform his or her…services in church” (Elwell, 2001, pg.1135). Spiritual gifts are given by God to help complete His work here on earth and also glorify His name. When we are chosen to by God to receive these spiritual gifts, He expects us to use those gifts in fulfilling His commission, building up the churches, and giving back to Him. That “gifts are given for the common good, that the church may receive edification” (1 Corinthians 14:5, New King James Version) Town defines a spiritual gift as the evident and manifest work of the Holy Spirit through the Christian (2001, pg. 313). He explains that, “spiritual gifts are not given merely for personal enjoyment or even primarily for an individual’s own spiritual growth” (2001, pg. 311). In the book of 1 Corinthians 12: 8 – 11 (New King James Version), it easily explains that there are nine spiritual gifts; the message of wisdom, faith by the Holy Spirit, healing by the Holy Spirit, miraculous powers, distinguishing spirits, prophecy, message of knowledge by means of the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues and the explanation of tongues. These all are works of the Holy Spirit and God gave them to each just as He determines as Paul stated. These are special gifts given by God without even asking for them. God gave them to us according to the will of the Holy Spirit. Depending on the type of gift we receive...

Baptisan Dan Kepenuhan

...Chapter 1 Christian life is to live in the Spirit. All persons who have the Spirit of God are children of God, and all those who are children of God have the Spirit of God. It is impossible to have the Spirit of God without being a child or a child of God without having the Spirit (Rom. 8:9). Paul said that life in the Spirit and who belong to Christ are synonymous expressions. In other words Paul is saying no one can belong to Christ without the Spirit. 1 Cor. 6:19-20 states when we purchased and the price has been paid in full, then our bodies are not our own but belongs to Him who buy / redeem us. Therefore redemption, our bodies become the temple of the Holy Spirit because God himself who gives us the Holy Spirit. So, having the Holy Spirit is not the result of human effort but a gift from God. The Holy Spirit declared Christ to us so that we repent, and The Holy Spirit forming Christ in us. Does it have the same Holy Spirit baptism of Holy Spirit? There are two opinions of the 'same' and 'not equal'. Those who argue are not the same holy spirit teach that baptism is the experience of the two that follow, which should be experienced by all Christians after water baptism. On the other hand, argues that the baptism of the Holy Spirit belongs to all believers who have truly repented. Outpouring or baptism of the Holy Spirit is one of special blessing of the new age (2 Cor. 3:8). The phrase appears only the baptism of the holy spirit in the Bible as much as 7 times in the New...

Introduction Author Paul Enns presents his perspectives on the supernatural gift of speaking in tongues and the Holy Spirit in his book The Moody Handbook of Theology, Revised and Expanded. However, Enns believes that gift ceased at the end of the Apostolic Age. This view is flawed because it does not take into account the manifestation of the Holy Spirit and the gift of speaking in tongues in today’s modern world. Whether the baptism in the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are still at work and bestowed upon believers today is an issue causing considerable confusion, disagreement, and tension within the Christian community. Essay on Pneumatology

...Pneumatology: Spiritual Gifts Spiritual gifts are basically just what the name implies, they are supernatural gifts given to us by God, and the Holy Spirit to your own spirit. They come in many different forms, giving us many different abilities. Spiritual gifts are given when the Holy Spirit enters into someone’s body, and are used to further glorify God and his greatness. There are many different spiritual gifts, and as is pointed out in 1st Peter 4:10 we all have atleast one, some people may have more or some people may just use theirs more than others. There is also something called the Fruit of the Spirit, although a lot like the Spiritual Gifts there are a few differences as well. Spiritual gifts are abilities to be used to glorify God, where Fruit of the Spirit is more about a person’s character and the Holy Spirit taking over their spirit. As a person matures in their spiritual journey the Fruits of the Spirit take over more gradually, showing how the Holy Spirit is taking over that person’s character. So while everyone is given a Spiritual Gift it may not always show, but anyone can develop the Fruits of the Spirit. Although there are many Spiritual Gifts that people are given, the one that seems to draw the most attention is the gift of speaking in tongues. The first record of this is in the first chapter of Acts on the day of Pentecost. The act of speaking in tongues happens when the speaker is overcome with the Holy Spirit. Some say that the...

These gifts are the gifts of wisdom, knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in different kinds of tongues, and interpretation of tongues. Short Essay on Pneumatology: Spiritual Gifts

...Short Essay #3 Short Essay on Pneumatology: Spiritual Gifts Spiritual Gifts and their place in today’s world is a topic that has been debated for some timed. One gift that has received specific attention is the gift of speaking in tongues. This essay will define what spiritual gifts are, as well as differentiate them from Spiritual fruits and show which one is a sign of spiritual maturity. This essay will also discuss speaking in tongues, defining it, discussing if it is a sign of baptism in the Holy Spirit and arguing whether or not it is still a valid spiritual gift today. Spiritual Gifts are “gifts of God enabling the Christian to perform his or her (sometimes specialized) service” in the church.[1] They are supernatural gifts bestowed by the Holy Spirit that enhance the work and ministry of the Christian. [2] Depending on which gift is given you use them to spread the Word of God and help the church to grown. They can be anything from the gift of prophesy, to the gift of speaking in tongues to the gift of administration. The gifts all have a place in ministry within the church. Spiritual gifts are not to be confused with Fruits of the Spirit. Fruits of the spirit such as love, joy, peace, kindness, etc. are all things that are produced in us by the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). These things are not given to us, but brought out from inside of us through the work of the Holy Spirit. The Fruits of the Spirit relate to our character, not the things we can do. Having...

Filled With The Spirit In Ephesians 5: 18

...While the Bible teaches us to be filled with the Spirit in Ephesians 5:18, we read in our textbook “The key to life in the Spirit…is to spend much more time in thanksgiving and praise for what God has done- and is doing and promises to do” (Fee, 2011). The history of Christianity can be confusing and there can be much controversy surrounding this matter and what it really means to be filled with the Spirit. “When it comes to our practices and behavior, we need to avoid making rules and laws, and trust the leading of the Spirit” (Smith, 2010). The historical Orthodox Church believes that the Person of the Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity and comes to live inside us through our trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We have learned throughout...

The Beliefs of Christians

...main beliefs of Christians are that God created everything, God has offered us salvation through Jesus, and God gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us. Christians believe that God created everything. By faith, Christians understand that the universe was created at God’s command, and he made everything out of nothing. (NLT version, Biblegateway.com, Hebrews 11:3). God is believed to be the maker of earth and the creator of all the people who live on it. He stretched out the heavens with his hands and all the stars are at his command (NLT version, Biblegateway.com, Isaiah 45:12). God used his words to create; he spoke things in to existence. For example; Genesis 1:3 says, “Then God said Let there be light and there was light” (NLT version, Biblegateway.com). Christians believe that God created everything in seven days. On the first day he made the heavens, the earth, and light; on the second day he made the sky; on the third day he made the land, the sea, and vegetation; on the fourth day he made the sun, the moon, and the stars; on the fifth day he made the sea creatures and the birds; and on the sixth day he made the wild animals, livestock, ground creatures, and man (NLT version, Biblegateway.com, Genesis 1). So finally, everything was completed, and on the seventh day God finished and rested from all his work. He blessed the seventh day and made it holy since it was the day when he rested from all his work. This is the account of the creation of the heavens and the earth. This...

Theo 201 Short Essay #3

...MLA Course and Section Number: THEO 201 B01 Essay on Pneumatology: Spiritual Gifts With a passion for theology and the word of God, it brings me great joy when asked to explain my beliefs. While some aspects of our faith are a little simpler to explain than others, one that is continuously debated is that of spiritual gifts. Because of a presented opportunity from a curious friend, I found it fitting to dive into the topic that is currently being debated at his home church. In Acts 2:1-4, Paul recounts Pentecost as the ultimate outpouring of the Holy Spirit to all believers, indwelling and granting them with spiritual gifts. Ephesians 4:11-12 explains that these Spirit-given abilities are not primarily bestowed for personal enjoyment or personal growth, but for Christian service and the edification of the body of Christ. Because every believer has the Holy Spirit in them from salvation (Romans 8:9), it is implied that spiritual gifts are also deposited at conversion, but may be developed at a later time. Though believers may have multiple spiritual gifts, it is guaranteed that every Christian has at least one (1 Corinthians 12:4, 31). One should not confuse spiritual gifts with the fruit of the Spirit. While both are sourced from the Holy Spirit and are results of spiritual baptism, their purposes differ. Elmer Towns describes the relationship perfectly, “A spiritual gift is an ability to be used in service, whereas spiritual fruit relates to a Christian’s...
