The Golden Ration

The golden ratio is a mathematical ratio of 1 to about 1.618. The golden ratio is found naturally in the world and in nature, but we can create if we try. Most artists that use the golden ratio either use it for the purpose of showing their sheer ability in mathematics to use it correctly and efficiently in their painting, sculptures, and other works of art, or for the mere fact that mankind as a whole has an, as of yet, unexplainable attractions to the golden ratio. Or in other words, the golden ratio makes things better looking or more appealing to the human eye. And because art is seen through the eye of the beholder, having the golden ratio throughout one’s work could be the difference between a piece of art and masterpiece. The first piece of artwork I want to talk about is the Last Supper by renowned painter Leonardo da Vinci. There are golden ration rectangles everywhere. You can see the rectangles on the entire length of the table where the disciples and Jesus are eating. You can also see the rectangles about the faces of said people, split on the disciples on the left, Jesus in the middle, and the disciples on the right. The feet of all the people eating are in their own rectangles as well, once again on the left, middle, and right respectively. Additionally, if you look at the background you can see the golden ratio on the back wall and the windows with an outside view. The next piece of artwork I would like to talk about is the most famous painting in the world the Mona Lisa, also painted by Leonardo da Vinci. There are two golden ratio rectangles about her. One from the top of her head to the bottom of her chin, and then from the bottom of her chin to the area of her wrist. These two rectangles are on top of each other and form a Fibonacci sequence from her finger to her nose. When Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa he also put her in a triangle with her head near the top. The triangle he used in a golden triangle, also known as an isosceles triangle, which as you may know will make it appear more favorably to the human eye. By doing so he draws most of the attention toward the woman’s face and mysterious smile and gaze. Because most people see it as more aesthetically pleasing with the golden rectangle, but the thing that pulls us towards the center is not the golden rectangle, but the golden spiral in the Fibonacci sequence because spirals naturally draws eyes towards their centers. People literally see different things when it comes to art. We see our conclusions in artwork drawn from our personalities, our joys, our sorrows, our pain, our minds, and our hearts. But even though everyone can see different things through the same piece of art, whether good or bad, the golden ratio still unanimously helps us see it in a more favorable or pleasurable sight. Why? I’m not really sure. Quite frankly I'm not sure if anyone actually knows where to start thinking about the question, let alone have an actual logical and concrete reasonable answer for it. Yet that is one of the great things about life, no matter what happens in life it is not always about the answer, but rather the adventure in trying to reach that answer and all the great memories, emotions, friends, and family that you have met and known that come with it.

Golden Ratio

...THE GOLDEN RATIO Enrico Freitag The golden ration can occur anywhere. The golden proportion is the ratio of the shorter length to the longer length which equals the ratio of the longer length to the sum of both lengths. The golden ratio is a term used to describe proportioning in a piece. In a work of art or architecture, if one maintained a ratio of small elements to larger elements that was the same as the ratio of larger elements to the whole, the end result was pleasing to the eye. The ratio for length to width of rectangles is 1.61803398874989484820. The numeric value is called “phi”. The Golden Ratio is also known as the golden rectangle. The Golden Rectangle has the property that when a square is removed a smaller rectangle of the same shape remains, a smaller square can be removed and so on, resulting in a spiral pattern. The Golden Rectangle is a unique and important shape in mathematics. The Golden Rectangle appears in nature, music, and is often used in art and ar chitecture. Something special about the golden rectangle is that the length to the width equals approximately 1.618… . The golden rectangle has been discovered and used since ancient times. Our human eye perceives the golden rectangle as a beautiful geometric form. The symbol for the Golden Ratio is the Greek letter Phi. The Fibonacci Series was discovered around 1200 A.D. Leonardo Fibonacci discovered the unusual properties of the numeric series, that’s how it was named. It is not proven that...

Rationing In 1984

...The Party often decreases the amount of rationing for different items, but the Outer Party members often do not realize; the Party members believe that the rationing has increased instead. The Party “issued a promise that there would be no reduction of the chocolate ration” (Orwell, 39), but as Winston is aware, “the chocolate ration was to be reduced from thirty grams to twenty” (Orwell, 39). When the Party members heard the announcement from the telescreen that the ration would be ‘increased’, there were “demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week” (Orwell, 58). However, Winston knows the truth that “only yesterday, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week” (Orwell, 58). The past statements and promises of the Ministries and Big Brother is literally changed before the eyes of the Party members, yet it is not realized. Due to the obliviousness of the Outer Party members, Big Brother can change the past and maintain total control over Oceania. It is unnerving that the people of Oceania can be controlled through the changes of the past. The people of Oceania do not realize the small changes in their society, as well as large changes, such...

The Da Vinci Dode

...The Da Vinci Code, which was released in the May of 2006, was about a murder that took place in the Louvre in France. There were clues in all of Da Vinci paintings throughout the museum. These clues lead to a discovery of a religious mystery that has been protected and kept hidden for two thousand years. This throws Robert Langdon and the victim’s granddaughter into a bizarre murder and crazy mystery, Not only is this movie a good movie and an interesting mystery to watch. But I can also connect what I’ve learned in sacred geometry to this movie in many aspects. One of the first examples of something I connected to our class, sacred geometry, was the shape of the museum that the dead body was found. The building that the body was found in was the Louvre museum. The Louvre museum is located in Paris, France and was established in 1793. In front of the actual museum there is something that is known as the Louvre pyramid. The Louvre pyramid is a large glass and metal pyramid surrounded by three smaller pyramids. The large pyramid serves as the entrance to the Louvre museum and was opened in 1989. The reason that I can connect this to our course in sacred geometry is the actually structure of the pyramid. There are many small triangles on it, which are also known as the triad. The triad is a three-sided shape and also is known as the first and oldest number. Also this is a pyramid and has many pyramids throughout it. The pyramid is something that we talked about in class to as...

Kawawate

...Kakawate Leaf: An Effective Pesticide Worms, bugs and other rice pests are an enigma to many farmers as these are threats to rice production. To most farmers, commercial insecticides and pesticides are the most effective and readily available pest controls. What they don’t realize is that these cost them added expenses not to mention the bad effects of these chemicals to health and environment. Dr. Alfredo R. Rabena, head of the Research and Development Office of the University of Northern Philippines in Vigan City, Ilocos, has discovered a solution. He found that the leaves of kakawate tree or Mexican Lilac (Glinicidia sepium) contains coumarins, an effective botanopesticide. To prepare the solution, chop the kakawate leaves and let these soak overnight to extract coumarins. Using a strainer, separate the leaves from the solution. Spray the solution to the ricefields. The best time to apply it is from eight o’ clock to nine o’clock in the morning and from five o’clock to six o’clock in the afternoon as worms and pests are coming out from the leaves at these times. So the solution would be more effective to use. If applied early, it wouldn’t be that effective as pests are still hibernating. And if used when the sun’s heat is too hot, it wouldn’t be that effective also as pest would hide. Since kakawate is a legume, says Rabena, its leaves are rich in nitrogen, an important soil nutrient. Hence, the discarded leaves can be applied to the field as an organic fertilizer. He...

Golden Ratio

...Central Luzon State University College of Arts and Sciences Department of Psychology The Golden Ratio: Reference of Beauty Submitted to: Nixon Agaser Submitted by: Jam Shimei I. Gamboa Jeanne R. Dadufalza Eden Leigh Pagoso Micah A. Montes The Golden Ratio: Reference of Beauty Beauty has been defined as a combination of qualities that give pleasure to the senses or to the mind. It is a philosophical concept, the aspects of which are studied under the term aesthetics, derived from the Greek word for perception (aisthesis). Aesthetics, therefore, is the study of beauty and, to a lesser extent, it’s opposite the ugly. It involves both the understanding and evaluation of beauty, proportions and symmetry. The assessment of facial beauty is immersed in subjectivity and therefore leans towards the world of art. Facial proportions and facial balance, however, can be measured and therefore fit somewhere between art and science. Aesthetics itself is now essentially a science in the formation, although obviously with a very strong philosophical and artistic background (Naini, et al. 2008.) According to Jang (2014) it is becoming clear that there is a science to beauty. Extensive research has shown that we have similar ideas about what constitutes a beautiful face. When British researchers asked women to rate pictures of various men, their choices were identical. When a group including English, Chinese, and Indians were asked to choose a “good looking” face from a selection of racially...

Father Son Relationships In Elie Wiesel's Night

...his father that seeing him get beaten depresses Wiesel. The actions of the other prisoners hurts Wiesel so much that he loses reason to live. On the other hand, Wiesel’s relationship with his father also puts him at a disadvantage. A foreman at Buna, Franek, beats Wiesel’s father due to his marching. Franek imposes a solution to stop the beatings: Wiesel’s golden crown. Wiesel explains, “But alas, Franek knew where to touch me; he knew my weak point” (53). Wiesel’s weak point is his father even though he helps him live. Eventually, Wiesel gives in and hands the crown over to Franek. He is then established in a new work station where he doesn’t have to be with Franek. Additionally, his father puts Wiesel through many situations with other prisoners, resulting in many setbacks. Another instance is when his father is ill and Wiesel must take care of him. Wiesel must give up some of his own food rations to feed his father. His selflessness puts him at a great disadvantage and many other prisoners see that and try to convince Wiesel to do otherwise. A prisoner claims, “I’ll give you a sound piece of advice-don’t give your ration of bread and soup to your old father. There’s nothing you can do for him. And you’re killing yourself” (Wiesel 105). Wiesel feeding his father puts him at risk of starvation and malnutrition. Also, Wiesel is spending a lot of time and effort caring for his father when he could use that time for his own benefit. As a result, Wiesel could also die as well as...

Claasical Sculpture

...[YOUR LAST NAME] 1 [YOUR NAME] [PROFESSOR’S NAME] [COURSE NAME] [DATE] Classical Sculpture Classical sculpture did not appear from nothing; its genesis was not that of Athena’s birth from the head of Zeus, but a rather more sedate process. The roots of classical sculpture are, surprisingly, to be found in Egypt. The Egyptians had highly developed sculpture, most of which had religious implications, as can be seen by the hieroglyphic inscriptions on many of the pieces (Wilkinson, 34-37). Subjects of sculptures included the numerous gods and goddesses of the Egyptian pantheon, pharoahs (who were considered divine) and slaves and other figures created for inclusion in burials; these sculptures, along with real items (e.g., chariots) would become part of the deceased’s “estate” in the afterlife (ibid., 64). The majority of Egyptian sculptures were all in the same style, regardless of whether they represented an animal-headed god, a king, or a scribe. The typical pose was frontal and standing, with the arms hanging close to the body, the hands with clenched fists, the left foot slightly advanced, and an ambiguous facial expression. It must be noted that this “typical Egyptian style” is much more a product of the Egyptian belief system and its associated symbology than the artistic imagination or technical competence of Egyptian artisans (ibid., [YOUR LAST NAME] 2 88). The influence of this Egyptian style can be seen on some of the earliest Greek sculptures, particularly those of...

By the end of the novel, as the propaganda needs of the leadership change, the pigs alter the chant to the similar-sounding but completely antithetical “Four legs good, two legs better.” 2. Beasts of England, beasts of Ireland, Beasts of every land and clime, Hearken to my joyful tiding Of the golden future time. These lines from Chapter I constitute the first verse of the song that Old Major hears in his dream and which he teaches to the rest of the animals during the fateful meeting in the barn. Like the communist anthem “Internationale,” on which it is based, “Beasts of England” stirs the emotions of the animals and fires their revolutionary idealism. As it spreads rapidly across the region, the song gives the beasts both courage and solace on many occasions. The lofty optimism of the words “golden future time,” which appear in the last verse as well, serves to keep the animals focused on the Rebellion’s goals so that they will ignore the suffering along the way. Later, however, once Napoleon has cemented his control over the farm, the song’s...
