The Great Climate Experiment Pros And Cons

For this week forum, I chose "The Great Climate Experiment." I always have been fascinated by our climate and all the changes that we are currently facing. Climate changes are something that scientists have been studying for many years, and their theories are that we are a significant impact on our planet due to fossil fuels. These drastic changes in the climate created Category 5 Hurricane Maria in which my family got devastated by the passage of the hurricane over Puerto Rico 75 days ago. They still have no electrical power and the island will not be the same anymore.

Looking into the article and conducting some research I did not come across that this article is peer-reviewed. When performing an advanced search in the APUS Library, the

...see if there was anything wrong with the electricity, by trying to turn on other lights in the house or looking to see if any electrical appliances were working. And so on and so forth until I found out why the light wasn't working. Do background research: The light doesn't come on the first time that I flick the switch. Based on experience I know a few potential causes of this observation, namely: faulty switch, no electricity, or burnt out light bulb. Using this background information I can then form a hypothesis as to why the light bulb didn't come on when I flicked the switch. Hypothesis: The light bulb didn't come on when I turned the switch because the light bulb has burnt out. Experiment: Take the old bulb and test it in a known working socket (at a neighbor's). Experiments should ideally have only two possible outcomes. Either they will support the hypothesis or disprove it. If the light doesn't work at my neighbor’s house then there is something wrong with the bulb. If it does then something else is causing the lack of light. Results: The old light bulb lights up when placed in a working socket at our neighbor’s house. Now we know that there is nothing wrong with that old bulb. But we still don't know why it didn't light in the first place. It's time to test another hypothesis. Hypothesis 2: The light bulb didn't come on because there is no electricity running to the...

Jones Lang Lasalle

...OB 5602 – Organizational Design Team Case Analysis Jones Lang LaSalle: Reorganizing around the Customer (2005) February 26, 2013 Team 5 Ravi Dawar James Sowers Joe Reinberg The Reorganization in Late 2000 From 1995 to 2005, the U.S. commercial real estate sector had undergone one of the most significant transformations of its history. Globalization led many American companies to seek out firms that could serve their real estate needs both internationally and locally in a consistent and comprehensive manner. They called these firms “integrated, global service providers”. Technological innovation also made the world a smaller place for real estate firms as sharing of information was made easier thanks to the advent of the internet and because of this, physical presence was no longer necessary. This led to a fierce competition between the global and local real estate firms. To differentiate their services, real estate firms started offering bundled service offerings, in which the same firm would perform all the key real estate operations such as leases, management, and construction. Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) did not have a stronghold in the regional geographies and was not able to compete with the local boutique firms because of missing synergies between its three core business units: The Tenant Representation Group (TRG), Corporate Property Services (CPS), and Project & Development Services (PDS). These three units worked separately...

Business Revision

...Chapter 1: The purpose of Business Activity The economics problem: needs and wants. Basically, all humans have needs and wants. Needs are things we can't live without, while wants are simply our desires that we can live without. We all have unlimited wants, which is true, since all of us want a new PC, a car, new graphics card, etc. that we actually do not need to live. Businesses produce goods and services to satisfy needs and wants. Although we have unlimited wants, there are not enough resources for everyone. Resources can be split into 4 factors of production, which are: - Land: All natural resources used to make a product or service. - Labour: The effort of workers required to make a product or service. - Capital: Finance, machinery and equipment required to make a product or service. - Enterprise: Skill and risk-taking ability of the entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs are people who combine these factors of production to make a product. With these discussed, lets move on to the economic problem. The economic problem results from limited resources and unlimited wants. This situation causes scarcity, when there are not enough goods to satisfy the wants for everybody. Because of this, we will have to choose which wants we will satisfy (that will be of more benefit to us) and which we will not when buying things. For any choice, you will have to would have obtained if you didn't spend that money. For example, you would have got a book if you didn't buy the pen...

Bank of America

...Introduction: The Bank of America was formed in 1998 after the merger of California based Bank of America and the Nations Bank of North Carolina. At the end of the 20th century the bank stood as the second largest bank in the American market with close to 4500 branches operating in 21 states. Most of these branches were located in high growth markets of the south and west coast. Globally, it employed 1, 40,000 employees across 190 nations, over $8 billon in revenues, $360 billion in deposits and some $600 billon in assets. However the markets had been consolidating for sometime with the total number of banks in America having reduced to 7000 from an figure of 14000 first recorded in 1985. Intense competition characterized the market and the challenge for national banks was to be able to localize product and service offerings for their customers. Financial services had traditionally been looked upon as commodities by banks and lack of experimentation marked the sector. The sector was however slowly realizing that traditional methods of cost reduction and other control mechanisms could only take growth so far. ‘Organic Growth', a higher wallet share of existing customers was a concept of much relevance in the highly competitive market. For achieving this Bank of America had given more freedom to individual bank managers to undertake more responsibilities. Others like Washington Mutual (WAMU) had introduced new models of customer experience, benchmarking their services...

...445–459 Barriers perceived to engaging with climate change among the UK public and their policy implications Irene Lorenzonia,b,, Sophie Nicholson-Coleb, Lorraine Whitmarshb a School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia, Norwich, NR4 7TJ, UK b Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia, Norwich, NR4 7TJ, UK Received 25 August 2006; received in revised form 12 January 2007; accepted 17 January 2007 Abstract This paper reports on the barriers that members of the UK public perceive to engaging with climate change. It draws upon three mixed-method studies, with an emphasis on the qualitative data which offer an in-depth insight into how people make sense of climate change. The paper defines engagement as an individual’s state, comprising three elements: cognitive, affective and behavioural. A number of common barriers emerge from the three studies, which operate broadly at ‘individual’ and ‘social’ levels. These major constraints to individual engagement with climate change have implications for achieving significant reductions in greenhouse gases in the UK. We argue that targeted and tailored information provision should be supported by wider structural change to enable citizens and communities to reduce their carbon dependency. Policy implications for effective engagement are discussed. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Keywords: Climate change; Engagement; Barriers; Public perceptions;...

Motivation & Productivity

...Technology and Motivation: are we able to measure its interaction? Tecnología y Motivación: ¿somos capaces de medir su interacción? Vicente Antonio López Rodríguez & Antonio Hidalgo Nuchera Departamento de Ingeniería de Organización, Administración de Empresas y Estadística Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales Universidad Politécnica de Madrid vlopezr@etsii.upm.es; ahidalgo@etsii.upm.es Abstract Taking into consideration that work motivation can be enhanced not only by increasing the levels of responsibility, meaningfulness and feedback that are built into job (intrinsic motivation), but also by improving the workers relationships, the working conditions, and the incentives (extrinsic motivation), four groups of concrete motivators have been introduced in our motivational model. For these groups of concrete motivators, a number of core dimensions have been derived, measured and evaluated given us the opportunity to establish the relationship, in terms of indicators, between the installed technology and the motivation it inspires. There have been carried out two applications of the proposed model: one in the conditions of a university in Cuba and the other in several Mexican institutions. The results obtained show the validity of the model for determining the motivational quality of working environments. Resumen Tomando en consideración que la motivación en el trabajo puede mejorarse no solamente por el incremento de los niveles de responsabilidad...

History of Puerto Rico

...Identification. Christopher Columbus landed in Puerto Rico in 1493, during his second voyage, naming it San Juan Bautista. The Taínos, the indigenous people, called the island Boriquén Tierra del alto señor ("Land of the Noble Lord"). In 1508, the Spanish granted settlement rights to Juan Ponce de León, who established a settlement at Caparra and became the first governor. In 1519 Caparra had to be relocated to a nearby coastal islet with a healthier environment; it was renamed Puerto Rico ("Rich Port") for its harbor, among the world's best natural bays. The two names were switched over the centuries: the island became Puerto Rico and its capital San Juan. The United States anglicized the name to "Porto Rico" when it occupied the island in 1898 after the Spanish-American War. This spelling was discontinued in 1932. Puerto Ricans are a Caribbean people who regard themselves as citizens of a distinctive island nation in spite of their colonial condition and U.S. citizenship. This sense of uniqueness also shapes their migrant experience and relationship with other ethnoracial groups in the United States. However, this cultural nationalism coexists with a desire for association with the United States as a state or in the current semiautonomous commonwealth status. Location and Geography. Puerto Rico is the easternmost and smallest of the Greater Antilles, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Basin to the south. Puerto Rico is a crucial hemispheric access...

...(HNBA) in 2001, company is considered the fastest growing composite insurance company within the Sri Lankan insurance domain. The rationale of this report is to identify how effective HNBA is in encouraging innovation for improvement of the processes, products and the services rendered to customers. The primary step of analyzing this fact is to identify the methods utilized to encourage, capture and manage ideas until successful implementation. The methods available and the inadequacy of methods employed are discussed in Task 01. To analyze the effectiveness further, a survey was carried out involving a sample of employees in different levels of the organization. A questionnaire was furnished which included aspects such as organization climate, current performance, policies and procedures adopted and the cognitive skills of the employees in encouraging innovation. The results of the survey are broadly analyzed in the Innovation Audit under the four criteria and are summarized in Task 02. The theory of analysis is taken from the teachings of Drummond and Ensor (1999). Best practices adopted by other companies who are best innovators in the world to be considered with regard to the innovation being the key driver for their business success. Innovative...

Human Behavior and Organization

...HBO - PRELIM Task 1(a) According to Taylor (1909), “Scientific Management is an art of knowing exactly what you want your men to do and seeing that they do it in the best and cheapest way”. In Taylors view, if a work is analysed scientifically it will be possible to find one best way to do it. It implies application of scientific principles for studying & identifying management problems. In this, he proposed that by optimizing and simplifying jobs, productivity would increase. He also advanced the idea that workers and managers needed to cooperate with one another. This was very different from the way work was typically done in businesses beforehand. A factory manager at that time had very little contact with the workers, and he left them on their own to produce the necessary product. There was no standardization, and a worker's main motivation was often continued employment, so there was no incentive to work as quickly or as efficiently as possible. Taylor believed that all workers were motivated by money, so he promoted the idea of "a fair day's pay for a fair day's work." In other words, if a worker didn't achieve enough in a day, he didn't deserve to be paid as much as another worker who was highly productive (Taylor, 1909). Hence scientific management is a thoughtful, organized, dual approach towards the job of management against hit or miss or Rule of Thumb. Principles of Scientific Management 1. Development of Science for each part of men’s job (replacement...

A genetically modified organism is any living thing that has had their DNA tampered with. This can be mutating, removing, or adding genetic material into the organism. All of the items listed in paragraph one has had their DNA tampered with. Most times when people talk about genetically modified organisms, they mostly refer to plants that are genetically modified.
