Isabeau's parents were Duke Stephen III of Bavaria-Ingolstadt and Taddea Visconti, whom he married for a 100,000 ducat dowry. She was most likely born in Munich where she was baptized as Elisabeth[note 1] at the Church of Our Lady.[1] Hers was the ancient and well-established Wittelsbach family, descended from Charlemagne, and she was great-granddaughter to the Wittelsbach Holy Roman Emperor Louis IV.[2][note 2] At that period Bavaria was the most powerful of the German states and divided between members of the House of Wittelsbach,[1] who confusingly all used the title Duke of Bavaria.

Isabeau's uncle, Duke Frederick of Bavaria-Landshut, suggested in 1383 that she be considered as a bride to King Charles VI of France. The match was proposed again at the lavish Burgundian double wedding in Cambrai in April 1385—John the Fearless and his sister Margaret of Burgundy married Margaret and William of Bavaria-Straubing respectively. Charles, then 17, rode in the tourneys at the wedding. He was an attractive, physically fit young man, who enjoyed jousting and hunting and was excited to be married.[3]

Charles VI's uncle, Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, thought the proposed marriage ideal to build an alliance with the Holy Roman Empire and against the English.[4] Isabeau's father agreed reluctantly and sent her to France with his brother, her uncle, on the pretext of taking a pilgrimage to Amiens.[2] He was adamant that she was not to know she was being sent to France to be examined as a prospective bride for Charles,[4] and refused permission for her to be examined in the nude, customary at the time.[1] According to the contemporary chronicler Jean Froissart, Isabeau was 13 or 14 when the match was proposed and about 16 at the time of the marriage in 1385, suggesting a birth date of around 1370.[2]

Before her presentation to Charles, Isabeau visited Hainaut for about a month, staying with her granduncle Duke Albert I, ruler of some of Bavaria-Straubing and Count of Holland. Albert's wife, Margaret of Brieg, replaced Isabeau's Bavarian style of dress, deemed unsuitable as French courtly attire, and taught her etiquette suitable to the French court. She learned quickly, suggestive of an intelligent and quick-witted character.[5] On 13 July 1385 she traveled to Amiens to be presented to Charles.[6]

Froissart writes of the meeting in his Chronicles, saying that Isabeau stood motionless while being inspected, exhibiting perfect behavior by the standards of her time. Arrangements were made for the two to be married in Arras, but on the first meeting Charles felt "happiness and love enter his heart, for he saw that she was beautiful and young, and thus he greatly desired to gaze at her and possess her".[7] She did not yet speak French and may not have reflected the idealized beauty of the period, perhaps inheriting her mother's dark Italian features, then unfashionable, but Charles most certainly approved of her because the couple were married three days later.[6] Froissart documented the royal wedding, joking about the lascivious guests at the feast and the "hot young couple".[8]

Charles seemingly loved his young wife, lavishing gifts on her. On the occasion of their first New Year in 1386, he gave her a red velvet palfrey saddle, trimmed with copper and decorated with an intertwined K and E (for Karol and Elisabeth), and he continued to give her gifts of rings, tableware and clothing.[6] The uncles too, apparently, were pleased with the match, which contemporary chroniclers, notably Froissart and Michel Pintoin (the Monk of St. Denis), describe similarly as a match rooted in desire and based on her beauty. The day after the wedding, Charles went on a military campaign against the English, and Isabeau went to Creil to live with his great-aunt Blanche, Duchess of Orléans, who taught her courtly traditions. In September she took up residence at the Château de Vincennes, where in the early years of their marriage Charles frequently joined her, and which became her favorite home.[5]

Coronation[edit]
Isabeau's coronation was celebrated on 23 August 1389 with a lavish ceremonial entry into Paris. Her second cousin and sister-in-law Valentina Visconti, who had married her own cousin Louis of Orléans (Charles' younger brother) two years earlier by proxy and papal dispensation, arrived in style, escorted across the Alps from Milan by 1,300 knights carrying personal luxuries such as books and a harp.[9] The noblewomen in the coronation procession were dressed in lavish costumes with thread-of-gold embroidery, and rode in litters escorted by knights. Philip the Bold wore a doublet embroidered with 40 sheep and 40 swans, each decorated with a bell made of pearls.[9]

The procession lasted from morning to night. The streets were lined with tableaux vivants displaying scenes from the Crusades, Deësis and the Gates of Paradise. More than a thousand burghers stood along the route; those on one side were dressed in green facing, those on the opposite in red. The procession began at the Porte de St. Denis and passed under a canopy of sky-blue cloth beneath which children dressed as angels sang, winding into the Rue Saint-Denis before arriving at the Notre Dame for the coronation ceremony.[9] As Tuchman describes the event, "So many wonders were to be seen and admired that it was evening before the procession crossed the bridge leading to Notre Dame and the climactic display."[10]

As Isabeau crossed the Grand Pont to Notre Dame, a person dressed as an angel descended from the church by mechanical means and "passed through an opening of the blue taffeta with golden fleurs-des-lis, which covered the bridge, and put a crown on her head." The angel was then pulled back up into the church.[11] An acrobat carrying two candles walked along a rope suspended from the spires of the cathedral to the tallest house in the city.[9]

After Isabeau's crowning, the procession made its way back from the cathedral along a route lit by 500 candles. They were greeted by a royal feast, and a progression of narrative pageants complete with a depiction of the Fall of Troy. Isabeau, seven months pregnant, nearly fainted from heat on the first of the five days of festivities. To pay for the extravagant event, taxes were raised in Paris two months later.[9]

Michigan Great Outdoors

...world-class fishing to golf, Michigan’s Great Outdoors is pure Michigan. But that’s not the type of Michigan outdoors I like. Michigan has a lot to offer, but the outdoors of Michigan I like is the great car shows they have every year or the wonderful parks or even the exciting entertainment that goes on the down town Detroit. Cars, everybody either wants or needs one. But even if you don’t own one but have the love for cars you can go to an event I love attending called the Detroit Auto Show. It has everything from the first challenger to the new 2012 charger. My dad and I go every year to look at the hottest new cars and the great detailing of the old ones. We also go to get away from our girlfriends at times. It is a great outdoor activity that’s not really active but it will keep your attention. Another place to escape to in my type of great outdoors is to go to one of Michigan’s great parks, whether it’s the great Chene Park, or a simple dog park. Surprisingly my favorite park is the dog park. It’s the dog park because I’m killing two birds with one stone. By letting him run out all his energy and beat up other dogs instead of tearing up my house and what’s not to like about that. I think my dog lives to destroy everything I own. So far he ate the cords to my television, two floor lamps and some other electronics. So who ever created the idea of having dogs parks thank you. Chene Park is another place I wouldn’t mind spending my time outdoors. They have all type of music concerts...

Perfrmance Management

...It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time © Established in 1960, Great Outdoors, was a third generation family owned and controlled business that had, by 2000, established itself as a manufacturer of high quality caravans, particularly the more rugged off road styles that were becoming increasingly popular among the older set. Unlike other caravan manufacturers, Great Outdoors sold its caravans from attractive show rooms in prime locations in all major cities. For clients, purchasing a caravan was akin to purchasing a prestige motor vehicle and they were treated accordingly. Management always went the extra yard to ensure client satisfaction and, within reason, the original purchaser had a lifetime warranty on the caravan. The sales staff was mostly aged 40+, was highly trained, and all had spent time in the factory learning the nuts and bolts of caravan building. Some of the caravan builders, following extensive training and mentoring, were now amongst the company’s best sales staff. Staff were also well managed – the company had an effective performance management system and its genuine ‘open-door’ policy meant two-way communication operated at all levels. Regardless of their position, staff were given an additional three week’s leave each year provided it was a caravanning holiday during which time they were expected to promote Great Outdoors caravans first hand and to listen to what other caravanners had to say about its caravans and those of other manufacturers. In 1990, the U.S. Congress passed the National Environment Education Act, allowing the Environmental Protection Agency to create environmental education initiatives at the federal level. Author Cathryn Creno describes the passage of a “No Child Left Inside Act” which would mandate that schools and parks have a relationship to promote environmental education would provide school children with more outdoor exposure. According to observation done on the campus, it was noticed that though there are study benches, it was (a) not enough to cater for the increase number of students at the university and (b) the current facilities provided is not conducive enough without a shelter over the benches to provide for during rain seasons. Due to these factors most of the students used the shades under the palm trees to study and discuss., These signals the need for the university to urgently respond to the issues by providing more out door facilities and improve the current ones.. 1.1 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM This research is to investigate the importance of having outdoor study facilities. Mountain Biking

...C. Burton C2 Montana Mountain Biking 1.) According to the five stages of customer loyalty, the MMB’s customers lye mostly in the commitment category. Given the rate of repeat customers (80%) . it would be reasonable to assume a similar report of the customers (60-75%) are in the familiarity or commitment stages, due to the fact the MMB is very serious about their enthusiasts. This would probably mean very few (10%) have reached the separation stage. MMB has had a very consistent business plan. Giving customers little reason to be pushed away from them. The article makes it sound like mountain biking enthusiast would not be quick to give up their hobby at all. The leaves roughly 15-20% exploration or familiarity. I feel that slightly more (10-15%) to exploration because of the new website traffic as well as email inquiries. They would not be inquiring about the photos if they understood the website. 2.) Given the large percentage of MMB’s customers are repeat visitors, I would recommend that adding a option to their website would allow users to submit their e-mail address so they can receive a monthly newsletter or updates about featured tours. In the e-mail messages I would also include links to the photo galleries that are posted on the website. They are appealing to the eye enough to draw people all on their own. The links are convenient for customers to be able to forward the e-mail to their friends who might be interested or are photo enthusiast. This strategy...

...Kirsten Richardson My Side of the Mountain January 25, 2015 The outdoor field trip I had with the students of East Buchanan was amazing! It blew my mind on much the students were able to link the book to the field trip together. I believe that students should learn survival skills just like Sam did in the book, even though some parts of the book where not realistic. Students of all ages should learn certain survival skills for living, because you may never know when they might be needed. The outdoor day at Fontana is a great for students to learn some of those skills, but also using the book “My Side of the Mountain”. At first I didn’t know what to expect, but I will say it was great experience to attend. I would have to say that one of my favorite parts of the day was ice fishing with the students in my group. It was great to see how the students were so excited about ice fishing, since not many of the have ever been on the ice let alone ice fishing. In the group there was one student who really stood out me during ice fishing because she caught two fish during the activity. She seemed to have a negative attitude about being here and during the first activity, she didn’t want to participate that much. However when she caught her first fish and then her second fish, it seemed her whole attitude changed about the experience she was able to attend. I personally enjoyed moving around on the ice and talking not only with the students, but also the other adults that were also...

The Importance of Outdoor Play and How Our Setting Ensures Children Are Given the Opportunity to Experience the Outdoor.

...The importance of outdoor play and how our setting ensures children are given the opportunity to experience the outdoor. Outdoor play is an essential part of a child’s development and children should be given every opportunity to discover the outdoor environment. As the EYFS states “…a rich and varied environment supports children’s learning and development. It gives them the confidence to explore and learn in a secure and safe yet challenging indoor and outdoor space…” (Statutory framework for EYFS Commitment 3.3) The outdoor area within the nursery enables children to explore and learn in a challenging environment. The outdoor area not only provides an environment to develop their physical strengths but also enables children to learn about the surrounding area, it provides an opportunity for exploration and develop an understanding of the world which they live in. The outdoor area is not just about letting children to let of steam but it is about allowing them opportunities to develop different areas. This means that the odd 10 – 15 minutes outdoor is not sufficient for the children and settings should consider allowing more time. As the ‘Statutory framework for the EYFS page 35’ states “...wherever possible, there should be access to an outdoor play area...” and The Principles into Practice card for Commitment 3.3 suggests that where possible, children should be free to move between the indoors and outdoors. In our nursery we aim to provide a continuous provision which...

Henry V staff lodged in a RV at the remote event site for a week to support the incredible outdoor experience. ... he explains why exercising outdoors has more benefits than exercising indoors. Green activity is when a person participates in outdoor activities such as bike riding, running, playing sports, etc. According to Fogel, there are more positive benefits when it comes to outdoor exercising. A few examples includes increased feelings of happiness, tranquility, relaxation, and energy. This article was a reliable source in the sense that the author was well educated and did his research. He included outside studies and linked them into his article. His article was slightly biased in the sense of his previous experiences of enjoying the outdoors as a child. There is also little information about the positive effects of participating in indoor activities to counter argue to not sound so biased. This article Green Exercise is important because it does demonstrate the power of nature as it relates to humans and success. This article provides evidence that Green exercise is a positive aspect in an individual’s life.   In the article by Katherine Reed called “A repeated measures experiment of Green exercise to self-esteem in the UK school children.” In the experiment children were asked to run 1.5 miles in indoor and outdoor settings in order to determine if there was any affect in their self-esteem. As a result when it came to the children there was not a significant difference when it came to exertion or enjoyment between the indoor and outdoor conditions. This source is...
